My engine is ticking pretty badly, sounds like a used sewing machine, however it idles fine minus the tick, so I'm pretty sure it's not a valve, I think it may be a spun rod bearing, but there is no metal in the oil? How do I diagnose this issue without pulling off the oil pan? I have no garage to work in at the moment.
-Does the ticking sound increase with Engine speed? A spun bearing I believe will get louder with RPM
It could be that your timing belt or camshaft timing is off. But if the engine isn't running really bad, or backfiring.. I'd say it's a valve.
Sometimes you can also get a tick from bad bearings in an alternator, water pump, etc. I would imagine the sound from these would not get louder with the RPM.
If you can't remove the oil pan. I'd say get a long screw driver, then while the engine is running. Place the Screw driver end on various places and stick your ear against the handle. This will amplify the sound for you... and you might get a better idea on where the sound is comming from.
You can pull the plug wires (one at a time) and see IF the noise deminishes once you've taken away the power stroke of the piston / rod / crankshaft assy...

Also, if it is the bearing, am I going to have to get the rank resurfaced? I hasn't run very long with the ticking sound going on, can I just replace the bearing?
Unfortunatly, rod knocks (read bearing failures) are generally caused by lack of lubrication or the motor being overreved...
Lack of lubriction would more than likely require the crank being turned... Overreving would require the rod journal being resized...
It's not to often that you can just replace the bearing...
Yeah, this problem resulted from my oilpan having a ding in it that leaked a good majority of the oil out of the system, when I finally got the oil light, it was too late.
my 99 si also has a tickin sound but it doesnt get any louder or softer but does increase in speed as the rpms rise. ive been told that it could be either lifers pecking or valve chatter. is there any way to get a better idea which other than pulling the valve cover
yeah i meant lifters, thats just what i was told by a mechanic who looked it up in his manual and told me thats what it was and that they had screw adjustments which meant that he could attempt to stop the noise if that was the cause instead of takin it to a honda dealer.
i dont know much about motors so i would not know either way.
They are actually "cam followers" which simply follow the cam lobes and open the valve accordingly... They are in fact adjustable and your mechanic should be able to perform that feat fairly easily...
