cars that have sat around outside are always in worse shape than ones that have been driven. seals dry up etc.

damn dsm hasnt been driven since septish and even then it wasnt driven much during the summer.
its been thrust back into action and the damn power steering cooler line was ok..until today. power steering fluid pissing all over the place. the damn metal line has had it. cracked and little holes in various places.
So as a quick remedy i just cut the old belt off. Ill be he-man in about a weeks time ;\)
gotta order a new hard line.

the pump had the typical leak out the top that I will fix but most places had that part (rebuild kit) on back order when i tried to order in the summer.

the coolant hard line to rubber line on the top of the turbo is also leaking some coolant. yeeehawwwwwww.

rear calipers need replacing and i gotta put in the new parking brake lines as well(at least i already have those).

nickel n dime special.

You are so fucked and you don't even know it yet how bad.

Also, that "harmless" powersteering leak will result in you buying a new alternator 2 weeks from today, mark my words. Make sure to get an autozone special so that you can get a new alternator every 2 months like clockwork.

1.well its not leaking anymore cause the pump isnt doing anything.
2. the alt in there now is an oem replacement. not some garbage and itll be fine.
3. im gonna buy the shit to fix it
4. if the alt ever needs replacing(which it wont ) ill get a proper one like was done already.
5. this car is old and stupid shit will nickel and dime no matter
6. this car is a temporary daily. hoping to have something better by spring/summer.
7. boost set at about 14-15psi right now. was out for about an hour today making sure everything else is ok . car drives fine.

I've never see an alternator that was hit with power steering fluid last for more than a month, it is typically 2 weeks. It doesn't matter if it is a small drip or just got saturated once. I don't know what fluid does but it kills the DSM alternators. Also a common problem (even though he said the line cracked, which is odd because it is a strong line) is when mechanics try to shortcut doing a timing belt job. They will remove the high pressure line on the power steering pump, it is a banjo bolt setup. They do this to get the line out of the way. Anyways they put it back together and reuse the crush washers. A small drip then starts, and you are back in the shop 2 weeks later with a bad alternator. Then the shop puts in their favorite brand of chinese Alternator and it either over voltages (some have reported 20volts) or undervoltages and gives the car a bad idle and it stalls out a lot. So here you can see how a marginal mechanic, meaning well and saving a few pennies, just fell into many of the DSM traps all in one innocent move. You now have the beginnings of an "unreliable" DSM, and it all started with not replacing two 50 cent crush washers.

I'll admit the cars are POS's and finkitey. However my friends and I have no problems driving our 20 year old "race" cars 200 miles or more. Yes they run warm, yes the idle is rough (1150 and 2200 cc/min injector respectively). However they always seem to start and run.

Good luck euphoric, you honestly need to get another car ASAP. That DSM is going to leave you stranded, I can almost guarantee it. Too much to go wrong on a high mileage 20 year old turbo car.

If it's the metal line that goes in front of the Radiator, just loop the line, and call it done. you'd be hard-pressed to overheat the fluid.

ya thats exactly what I was thinking. Ill drive it this week and look at it on the wkend.

as for the alt. the leak out the top of the pump has been aroudn for almost a yr. granted ive hardly driven the car, but the alt is still kickin...for now.

then the fluid started pissing out that loop on sat. . sitting outside for the last few months was hard on the car. its been really cold at times. and living a full life in canada. that part of the line threw in the towel.

ill gladly post up if the alt goes. i sure hope it doesnt. I dont want to have to pay for that on this thing at this pt. Id obviously change it myself and get the appropriate one if i really have to do it. I already have to put some coin into it anyways. hopefully dont have to do more than I am planning to.

ive already prepped my mind for the chance the car will leave me stranded lol. but hopefully not. like you said yours always starts. this thing seems to magically start all the time too.

so. I got to the parking cables and rear calipers this weekend.

cables were a bit of a bitch crawling on the cold concrete floor but overall not to bad. some idiot shit like having a couple supports behind the driveshaft/heat shield. but surprisingly easy to get around. ANd surprisingly the bolts werent to bad.
So its a long weekend here so I took my time . Got it all done friday night , but didnt bleed my brakes until sat. I got around to it lastnight and took the car out. All was fine. Until about 1/2 in and i lose most braking pwr.

wtf. I pull off. look around. notice fluid on the drivers side. i couldnt really tell what was up(Was dark) but was fine and just limped it home using minimal brakes and if i needed more, my new parking brake lol.

get home. take a look.

wtf. the brake line was touching the wheel and wore through.
I had noticed the calipers i got werent 100% identical when i got them but didnt think anything of it. (never had issues before). well the way the line came off the caliper caused it to hit the wheel. there was nothing wrong with installation. it was purely the way the line came off this caliper(which im guessing is a fwd caliper). looking at pics, the awd caliper has the line off at the proper angle compare to the calipers i put in.

luckily it only wore through the 1 line completely(the other was worn a bit).
being my only car right now and needing to get to work i ghetto rigged some shit together in true dsm fasion .
which involves zip ties and small vice grips

lawls. took it around the neighbourhood. i should be able to limp to and from work at least for one day. Ill take it real easy.(and even downshift into 1st which makes a big difference)

I gotta pick up some stainless lines tomorrow. fml.

possibly might complain about the calipers they sold me.
though i shouldve paid a bit more attention. chalk that up to being complacent and not having issues in the past.

failboat.

oh ya. also took the pwr steering cooler line out. its got some holes in it where i suspected. ill post pics later.

bought a small brake line that i bent a 180 in and hooked the two lines up.
still didnt pick up a belt yet for that but at least its not puking fluid anymore.

You should have checked clearances, especially after noticing you had the wrong calipers before installing lol

tell me about it. they are talon calipers. the thing that caught my eye was the parking cable bracket was wrong. so i had to reuse the originals. it wasnt until after that i noticed the the parking line off at the wrong angle.

they are rears.
i am not sure exactly what they are. apparently the place i got them from discontinued awd rears a while back...but they never said that to me. i heard this from another source.
this source said they ended up with fwd rears and had the same issue as me.

the car is a 92.5 so there were changes midway through the yr.

uh oh. coolant light/parking brake light started showing up dim (Sometimes) at idle. ruh roh . ive already beaten the two week mark by a day though

couldve been weather related . rainy/snowy crap. engine bay has lots of melted water in places incl near the alt. ill bust out the meter tonight/tomorrow.
and check my fuses /connections.

just had to do some car jockey. busted out the meter. 14.21-14.20 volts at idle.

thats normal. im gonna chalk it up to wet weather and unusual amt of water droplets in the engine bay/on the alt and my shitty battery connections lol not bolted down.

but ill have to definitely keep monitoring things because that normal amt of voltage doesnt mean the alt is ok.

could be the voltage regulator pooping out.

Coolant light and parking brake lights are both switches to ground I believe. Its probably just water/moisture/bad ground related. No worries. I think another thing that killed our alternators were downpipe gasket leaks which spit hot air at the alternator, that combined with the banjo bolt ps line leak = instant death.

Just make sure the pos. post is screwed down tight, and that the battery line to the junction box is good. belt should be tight, too.
(not too tight, of you'll fuck up your crank pulley)

with everything disconnected, I used to blast my alternator with a can of brake cleaner every now and again to be sure it was clean-ish.

at one point, I had to replace the power line from the alternator to the junction box.
between the heat under the hood, and the age of the car, it was just garbage.
I ended up getting amp hook up wire from circuit city, and putting eyelets on it to bolt it in place of the stocker.

I definitely replaced a couple alternators on my DSM over the years from PS leaks. \:\( I finally bought a manual rack but ended up selling the car before installing it. Once I let my DSM sit for 6-months. Before that it was "nice" compared with almost any DSM I'd find, but afterward it never was quite the same. Damn coolant leaks.

lol this thing was great over the yrs. now its been not driven much in the last couple yrs and before i put it back to duty it had sat since beginning of summer.

talk about weird shit going on. you think a suby is quirky lol this thing has a life of its own right now.

driving home(this has happened twice in the last couple weeks). the car will just hit a wall and fire on minimum 2 cylinders...could actually be 1. the car has nothing and probably would stall out but i keep it running and hold the revs. rev it up and down a bit while im coasting a tiny bit and within 30 secs itll kick back to normal operation its only happened twice. could probably use new plugs but I am wondering if its something else.

i have one small coolant leak. ill look at it eventually.
also the car just made some wierd grinding noise this aft for about 50 ft. i thought i had run something over and was dragging something. got out. loooked..nothing. drove away and it was fine. probably was the brake pads but really strange.

the cyl drop is usually shitty plug wires, or an overheating transistor pack.

the scraping? no idea.
I've never owned an AWD, but I'd suggest checking the xfer case, first ;\)

past that, if could be a sticking ebrake, or something. the rears are a simple design, though. Not much that can go wrong back there.

nah i just replaced those.

went out tonight. no griding noise. probably got something in the wheel and didnt notice.

ill replace the plugs first to see if that cures the problem(easiest and cheapest first) .

took the suby out after putting on a new greddy catback. full 3.1xx " stainless.
nice piece and scored a good deal. boxer sound is so win. and did i mention how it drives a zillion times nicer better than the dsm durrr 15 yrs newer and higher end to begin with.

What did you replace them with?
You'd be surprised how picky DSMs are with plug wires...
OEM, NGK, and 90% of the time, magnacores are the way to go.

i meant i had just replaced the rear brakes and pbrake cables (re: parking brake comment) the car has newer ngk wires on it. not sure on exact age though(but not that old)

today on the way home i had a big bout of misfire about 10 mins into the trip. wasnt going anywhere then it got better. about 2 mins later it was really bad.firing on 1-2 cylinders. i pulled off to the side. then held the revs for about a min. then revved it higher a bit and it all kicked back on. off i went home. just went to get gas and it was fine. lol

I feel ya man. Mine has an interesting little problem - if I put on a new-to-me set of Taylor Thundervolt wires, I get a sputter during boost, car basically just falls flat on its face. As soon as I put on some old Accel wires, the car pulls like a raped ape. I don't get it, but at least in my case I just have to go with the proper wires and I'm good \:\) Good luck man, half the fun of a DSM (as you well know) is figuring out how retarded they can be.

Ya it is retarded. lol
now the lower coolant hose is leaking a little bit. so thats two small coolant leaks. i tightened up the cheese clamp thats there and it didnt work. ill have to get a better clamp.

i finally got the power steering belt back on. i attempted it a couple times during the week after work and i just wasnt having any of it. coming home after a long day didnt make me want to deal with it. but got it on quite easily today and after a nice day of relaxing yesterday.

no leakage from my little loop...yet. i just used regular power steering from the local autoparts store. its clear colour. the old shit was red adn the manual says dexron shit/atf . hopefully itll be ok.

changed the oil , and tightened up some connections while i was in there .

checked the plugs and they looked ok. number 2 showed lean quite a bit but i just ran the car normally before i shut it off last so that doesnt say much.

it misfired really badly a couple mornings this past week. almost made me turn around and go home but then it smartened up.
i may replace the coil and transistor to see if that helps.

also have a used oem alt coming to have(just in case).

still have the wrong rear calipers on there(base/fwd ones). was working with the local store about it and its proving a bit hard to locate awd ones. havnet heard from the guy in about a week. ill have to go in to see whats up.
i want to get that fixed cause those lines are under quite a bit of stress doing that hard turn.

well the coolant light/parking brake light and battery light were on a lot more. the car was slowly getting harder to start. it was sometimes ok and other times bad. i measured 11.xx a couple days ago..

thankfully the alt i got used came in today(off a dsm forum member..oem ...supposedly good)

i toss it in when i get home...and now the lights are still on. wtf mate. its actually worse than before lol.(they stay on).

and the battery sits at about 12.2 volts at idle. raise the revs and itll go up to 14.xx

but that just doesnt isnt right. either i blew a fuse(chekced underhood and all were ok) or i have something grounding out(possibly the ground line on the oil cooler housing).

any other thoughts? could my battery have been that low that the system is just having a hard time charging it back up? i wouldnt think so but maybe. Just had to move the car and it still starts..actually better than it has in a couple days. weird.
