I've never see an alternator that was hit with power steering fluid last for more than a month, it is typically 2 weeks. It doesn't matter if it is a small drip or just got saturated once. I don't know what fluid does but it kills the DSM alternators. Also a common problem (even though he said the line cracked, which is odd because it is a strong line) is when mechanics try to shortcut doing a timing belt job. They will remove the high pressure line on the power steering pump, it is a banjo bolt setup. They do this to get the line out of the way. Anyways they put it back together and reuse the crush washers. A small drip then starts, and you are back in the shop 2 weeks later with a bad alternator. Then the shop puts in their favorite brand of chinese Alternator and it either over voltages (some have reported 20volts) or undervoltages and gives the car a bad idle and it stalls out a lot. So here you can see how a marginal mechanic, meaning well and saving a few pennies, just fell into many of the DSM traps all in one innocent move. You now have the beginnings of an "unreliable" DSM, and it all started with not replacing two 50 cent crush washers.
I'll admit the cars are POS's and finkitey. However my friends and I have no problems driving our 20 year old "race" cars 200 miles or more. Yes they run warm, yes the idle is rough (1150 and 2200 cc/min injector respectively). However they always seem to start and run.
Good luck euphoric, you honestly need to get another car ASAP. That DSM is going to leave you stranded, I can almost guarantee it. Too much to go wrong on a high mileage 20 year old turbo car.

If it's the metal line that goes in front of the Radiator, just loop the line, and call it done. you'd be hard-pressed to overheat the fluid.

You should have checked clearances, especially after noticing you had the wrong calipers before installing lol

Just make sure the pos. post is screwed down tight, and that the battery line to the junction box is good. belt should be tight, too. (not too tight, of you'll fuck up your crank pulley)
with everything disconnected, I used to blast my alternator with a can of brake cleaner every now and again to be sure it was clean-ish.

at one point, I had to replace the power line from the alternator to the junction box. between the heat under the hood, and the age of the car, it was just garbage. I ended up getting amp hook up wire from circuit city, and putting eyelets on it to bolt it in place of the stocker.

I definitely replaced a couple alternators on my DSM over the years from PS leaks. I finally bought a manual rack but ended up selling the car before installing it. Once I let my DSM sit for 6-months. Before that it was "nice" compared with almost any DSM I'd find, but afterward it never was quite the same. Damn coolant leaks.

the cyl drop is usually shitty plug wires, or an overheating transistor pack.
the scraping? no idea. I've never owned an AWD, but I'd suggest checking the xfer case, first
past that, if could be a sticking ebrake, or something. the rears are a simple design, though. Not much that can go wrong back there.

What did you replace them with? You'd be surprised how picky DSMs are with plug wires... OEM, NGK, and 90% of the time, magnacores are the way to go.
