I have a love/hate affair with the Great Blue Heron. I've never been able to get close enough to get the shots I want.

I lived next to a river for 13 years and could never get a decent shot of one. They'd always be there when I was driving by, but they're super wary of foot traffic. Great shot!

Believe it or not he surprised me! Haha. I was walking along a boardwalk trail over the swamp and turned a corner and saw this guy. He posed for me for a solid 3-4 mins. I was even able to drop my bag and throw the 300mm on the camera. Thanks for the kind words \:\)

Almost the same thing happened to me at the creek by my house. I walked up on the heron feeding 10 feet away and didn't see it until it freaked out and flew off.

All I had was a 135mm lens that day:

there's one that hangs out at the creek here by my place. I get a shot of it every once and a while. When I was at the beach there's one that hangs out in a pond by my parents house. I got my camera to go shoot it, but it flew away as I approached. I didn't see it standing in the reeds at the waters edge and it took off as I was scouting a spot to set up.

scott: the background is so plain in your heron shot that it allows the heron to be the star, IMO.

I *really* liked the warming suggestion so I ran with it. This is a reduced-size version of the file I sent off to print. I'm not sure how it goes with others, but the prints from mpix end up about 1/3rd to half a stop darker than my monitor and the color gets washed out just a bit, so this might seem a bit severe on the web.

i went through with a variety of colors, little touches, and in the end I kept coming back to this. <3 folders for layers, btw. saved my ass a few times and made picking out what I liked so much easier.
