This is probably a n00b question, but is there a technical reason behind this?

Canon:

Rebel XS

50D

7D

5DII

Nikon:

D3000

D90

D300

D700

So we've learned two things here.

1) Nikon cares a WHOLE LOT MORE about autofocus systems than canon does!

And

2) For whatever reason, manufacturers don't extend autofocus points anywhere near the edges of the frame. Ever.

Why?

focus and recompose - AF points on the outside of the frame are pretty useless if you just use this technique. This is precisely up until recently not all of the AF points in canon cameras were cross-type f/2.8 sensitive ones...

Because that would require the focusing system to be the same size as the sensor, which it is not.

I figured it was something like that but to me for something like sports photography, it would be awesome to have a frame covering AF system.

I found comparing all these images from low end canon and
Low end nikon to the high end of each VERY fascinating. Interesting stuff

Can you also find out which AF points are cross points?

I find that my D80 (which has the same layout as the D3000 and D90)does much better with AF when a cross point is selected. I normally use the middle point of the second row from the left or the center point. I try to avoid the non-cross points.

You can get rocked by this if you are shooting at wide apertures like 1.4, be careful...

also, keep in mind the full frame sensors make it seem the focus points are even closer to center, but really, it's just the edges of the sensor have expanded.

btw...i hate canon AF.

i'm trying to figure out why i'd want or need a focus point out near the edge. isn't that encouraging potentially awful framing?

I'd say that it's probably to stay out of the barrel distortion range of various "cheaper" lenses.

It's a space constraint issue since neither the AF sensor nor the metering sensor are on the same plane as the recording sensor. I read about it once, but now I can't find a good reference. Plus in Nikon's case, it allows them to use the same AF sensor on the FX and D300 lines.

FWIW, I lock focus and stick the subject at the edge of the frame fairly regularly.

cheers,
scott

yep! i regularly check out nikon equipment as well, and i must say, i like nikon bodies, but still out on the fence about lenses. i'm sure they're pretty much on par w/ each other, but i like the prime selection of canon's better (that, and i'm already deep into canon primes)

this was a fun one to use tho...D3S + 200/2

I'm pretty sure I would never return that combo, even if it meant moving to Idaho and living off the grid.

I might even drink blue moon with an orange slice on the rim (ewww) just to hold the mighty 200mm f/2.
