GB GB Sharesies! Post Master Supreme Registered: 03/22/04 Posts: 37351 Loc: Craigslist	This is probably a n00b question, but is there a technical reason behind this? Canon: Rebel XS 50D 7D 5DII Nikon: D3000 D90 D300 D700 So we've learned two things here. 1) Nikon cares a WHOLE LOT MORE about autofocus systems than canon does! And 2) For whatever reason, manufacturers don't extend autofocus points anywhere near the edges of the frame. Ever. Why? _________________________ Ay yo girl, when you gonna let me tap that?

This is precisely up until recently not all of the AF points in canon cameras were cross-type f/2.8 sensitive ones...

I found comparing all these images from low end canon and Low end nikon to the high end of each VERY fascinating. I find that my D80 (which has the same layout as the D3000 and D90)does much better with AF when a cross point is selected. I normally use the middle point of the second row from the left or the center point. I try to avoid the non-cross points.

busfare busfare tickets plz Post Master Supreme Registered: 11/09/00 Posts: 14597 Loc: Dark Side of the Moon	also, keep in mind the full frame sensors make it seem the focus points are even closer to center, but really, it's just the edges of the sensor have expanded. btw...i hate canon AF.

scootergeek scootergeek Post Master Supreme Registered: 07/24/00 Posts: 46248 Loc: East of St. Louis	It's a space constraint issue since neither the AF sensor nor the metering sensor are on the same plane as the recording sensor. I read about it once, but now I can't find a good reference. Plus in Nikon's case, it allows them to use the same AF sensor on the FX and D300 lines. FWIW, I lock focus and stick the subject at the edge of the frame fairly regularly. cheers, scott _________________________ Still pissy after all these years...
