interested to see how his race is. It's short enough distance where you kind of want to gas it, but long enough you need to pace yourself.

I noticed, thought maybe you were injured. I have a treadmill in the garage for events like this, had to use it twice this week.

Yeah, they offered a 40, but I felt like it was my warm-up. Everyone said the 40 course doesn't offer anything besides "more".

I'm still not sure my approach here. Part of me says it's a warm-up for the season, rather than doiing a 20 trail run of my own. Part of me says it's a race, and thus I should push at least a little. Part of me says it's short enough I can blow up big and hobble out.

I've tended to enjoy my races so far. I don't tend to lay it on the line that much.

Went to a physical therapist today since I have been battling through some EXCRUCIATING upper back pain in my runs. Unresolved by ibuprofen, naproxen, tylenol, lidocaine patches, or baclofen. Turns out it is a mix of poor posture, my shoulders are really curved in, as well as a large loss of muscle on my left side (rotator cuff area). This has lead to overcompensating in my trap and some muscle that goes 45° towards my neck. He gave me some strength bands, said no more push-ups or anything that will curve my shoulders in, and a litany of foam roller exercises. It will take weeks to get better, really hoping I can fix it soon though.

A lot of this probably explains my 185 to 167 weight loss, lots of muscle went away I figure. Hope everyone else is hanging in there.

That sucks, man! I hope you have a quick recovery. Any specific reason behind the muscle loss?

Bummer man.

I'm a bit confused by the nature of it though. Too much imbalance towards chest? or towards back.

I hope the plan works and you're back on it. Rooting for you to hit 50.

Yikes, hope you figure it out :scared:

I'm still in limp mode over here, with an unknown return date to even easy jogging. Visiting a sports.medicine place in a week or so, I need a prognosis on my Achilles. I have not been hit with any shells yet walk with a limp.

Even biking seems affected marginally, esp out of the saddle stuff. Swimming my off foot cramps lol because I don't use the problem foot for walls

Damn stickz, that achilles is still killing you?

Do you do a lot of drop? no drop?

I found my altras (zero drop) aggravate my achilles/calf muscles if I do more than 50% of my miles in them. That said, my feet prefer their footbox, so I mix them up.

I'm on track to break 50 miles this week. Not bad at all for just maintenance. I need to figure out a way to incorporate more strength training into my routine; it's hard when running is the priority. All I really do other than running are core and injury prevention exercises...

Damn, you guys are making me feel like a pussy for complaining about my sore quads, lol.

This past weekend I jumped into a 30k at the last minute. I’ve done the 50k twice now and absolutely love the course out in the desert near Barstow, but was worried about recovery taking too long before the 100k next weekend.

It was my first time back racing after 7 months of less than perfect training. Based on my times in the 50k (I went 5 hours flat last year) I set 3:00 as a goal that would require me to test my fitness a bit. The first 13 or so are pretty much a long steady climb before some rad slot canyon and old mine tunnel miles before a horrible steep climb back up to the finish line. I ran nice and steady during the climb in sandy Jeep roads, and really enjoyed the technical stuff through the recently washed out canyons. 2000+ feet of climbing had my non-climbing trainer legs barking at me, but I was able to keep moving well. Missed that 3 hour goal by 10 minutes, but considering the fact that I’ve done zero climbing in the last 7 months, I think I handled it pretty well. Was happy to keep the average pace under 10 min miles. Ended up 12th overall and 2nd in the 40-49 AG.

Headed back to AZ next Friday for my 3rd Black Canyon 100k. Should be interesting. I’m totally confident that I can finish it, but it will likely get ugly a few times.

Too much shoulders forward. I have been doing the resitance exercises the PT gave me and rolling out my back a lot and it has helped quite a bit. I haven't had a drop to my knees back stabbing pain since, though still some discomfort.

That leads me to my next theories of why I think it is happening. First, I tend to run on the balls of my feet, and a lot of my miles are on pavement. As my shoes wear I get a lot more impact on my upper body and I believe that has really added to the pain generation. As a result, I switched to running in Hokas, and I adjusted my stride to run like what I call "an old man posture" with a heel to toe roll. Adjusting your stride after 30 years is tough, takes a lot of focus, but I believe it has helped a lot too.

My other theory is stress related pain. So my job at work is actually working with chronic pain patients. We work on reducing their use of opioids for chronic pain, because a lot of the pain is generated due to mental factors, not physical ailments. I didn't even realize I think a lot of it is happening to me. The stress of my job, the patients I deal with, raising 3 kids, trying to keep my marriage tight (no issues here really, just time with my wife is what I mean), and training for the 50k all really is getting me tense. I didn't even realize it until one of the MDs I work with was telling me to think about this injury, and how it has never happened before and I have been running all my life. It really changed my whole mindset. So I try to work on mindfullness a lot now, and identify when things are stressing me and when I start getting tight in my upper body. I don't expect to change your opinion about chronic pain in this one post, but I truly believe that pain is a product of environmental factors a majority of the time.

Anyway, I am doing well. I ran 11 miles today and only had a twinge of discomfort. Hope all is going well for everyone else. I am secretly Strava watching you all!

Second DNF of my endurance career on Saturday. Went into it undertrained, hoping to get by on experience (I’ve ran the race twice now) and base fitness. Felt “off” from the start and by 20 miles or so I just wasn’t enjoying myself. Was still moving well but my heart just wasn’t in it and the thought of running another 25 miles was too much so I pulled the plug at the 60k finish where I knew there was a shuttle back to the car.

I’m only a little bummed about it as I’m pretty in-tune with the signals my body sends my mind and I know it was the right call. 2 days later and I feel like I ran a hundred miler so that’s reassuring. My body just wasn’t ready.

Time to recover and get ready for Way Too Cool 50k in 2 weeks!

I crossed the double digit threshold for the first time since September, jfc. this seems like a long road back to ultra-ready.

That said, 10 today was easier than 8 last week.

That's pretty awesome.

Good to see this thread is still alive. Wondering for you guys who know Hoka well enough... what would be the ideal neutral shoe to pick up? I have a coupon for a free pair that I need to use by end of month.

I usually rock the NB 840s. Thinking of doing Cliftons, same size, in a wide.

So I went from long time Asics fan to the M Clifton 5 wides and they are amazing. The extra padding has really helped the upper back pain I had talked about previously. I ran a half marathon in them this weekend and wasn't even winded, though that is more fitness than the shoe I guess. I would say try them, I am sold on Hokas now.

I normally drive straight from Long Beach to Fleet Feet on Friday evening to get my bib, then meet my parents for dinner before driving up to crash at the start. This time we’re gonna visit my grandma in her new retirement home in Lincoln so I’ll just grab my bib in the morning. Will still be spending the night in the car at the start.
Just look for the white Ford Flex parked right at the front of the lot across from the start line. \:D

It’s really only the first 8 miles that are affected by the mud. Once off the Olmstead Loop, the moisture really well.

Sounds good. I'm going to grab my bib Friday night, then drive out early on Sat. A friend of mine had the good idea to just get out early and bust out the camping chair and sip on some coffee so I think I will do that too. I am really excited and even more nervous.

Not sure the last time you were in Lincoln but you may be surprised at how much more they keep building. We are trying to buy a place in Granite Bay within the next year. 😎

That’s a good plan cause parking is a pain in the ass the later you get there.

My only advice is to take it easy on the Olmstead loop where you’ll be in a conga line for the majority of it. After that there’s plenty of room to open it up a little and find your stride. And try to remember to look around and enjoy the scenery and chat with fellow runners. Makes the experience so much better.

That course was brutal, it was like a 30 mile tough mudder or Spartan. Just constant mud, eroded trail, and knee deep water crossings. I did a vlog with a go pro will try to make a YouTube vid this week. Chris is a really cool guy, glad I finally meet him after 16 years.

So for you more experienced distance folks, what's your maintenance mileage looking like? I'm hovering around 40-45 mpw with an occasional 50+ mile week, but thinking in April/May I need to ramp up a bit more before my training cycle kicks in...

Since I still cycle commute I go by time. But I'm absolutely sure you could finish a 50 miler if you shifted your runs toward the terrain you'd run.

The only week I've ever hit 50 mpw was if I raced an ultra. I think peak training was 40? and another 2 hours of cycling. So maybe equate that to 12 more? And I do hike 1-2x a month with a infant on my back.

Now I will admit I got my ass kicked by a 50, but I still was upper 1/3 of the pack.

So lots of rambling, but if you can mange 50-60mpw you'll do fine on a 50 miler. Find that forever pace, practice the type or terrain and break it into pieces. It's just an easy 10km, followed by another, followed by another...

lol I don't know that I have any desire to run for that long. My focus is still on the marathon, I'm wondering if I can break 2:50 at Chicago this year
