Finished the New Year's LA Half Marathon last night. Holy crap there were a lot of hills. But managed to squeeze out a PR @ 1:49:46 in 48-50° temps.
#258 in a crowd of ~3,800. Stoked!

Thinking of getting a vest for my longer runs. The running belt and water attachments make me feel like a dork.
And got a dose of reality tonight. Tried a 7x7 with each interval being a half mile @ 7:30 pace. Blew up after 5 of 7. On the plus side, training only requires I keep it under an 8:20 pace. I was able to finish out the last two after a brief walk. Going to try again next week.

Interval training really is effective tho right? I need to get those back into my schedule. A lot more 'fun' IMO also compared to simply slugging out a given distance at a tempo effort (shudders)
But I guess it all depends what you are trying to accomplish

I do enjoy the different workouts. My training usually consists of the following:
Mon - 5-6 mile interval or fartlek Weds - 5-7 mile progression or tempo Fri - 3-5 mile recovery run Sat - long run
Fridays occasionally work in a longer distance for those dreaded back-to-back fatigued runs. And beginning in February, mid week mileage will add an extra 1-2 miles per session.

I had the same issue and it was the IT band, as you know. Cold weather makes it much, much worse. Foam roller, stretching and cushioned shoes seem to be a huge help.
I'd say if you're having some aches it might not be the time to start pushing too hard. Or maybe do at least a day of rest between each run.

Walt Disney World Marathon today. Finished in just under 4:40. Although that was for 26.6 due to a lot of running around people early on. Weather was pretty decent. Had a shot at DJ. 4:30 through 20 and then the wheels fell off.
My wife smoked me (again) and finished in 4:17. We ran together for 17 miles and then I told her to drop me because I knew I was holding her back.
No more fulls for me. Just not cut out to do it well and it sucks all the fun out of running.
Now off to Epcot to eat and drink beer. 1. Congrats to you and your wife 2. Enjoy your well deserved food and drink! 3. How do you figure you ran an extra 0.4 miles weaving through crowds? My Garmin recorded 26.6. I could see it building up with each mile marker. My 1 mile split beeped just a few seconds prior to the 1 mile marker and the gap got bigger every mile.
Also I am pretty sure I read that a marathon course is required to measure 26.2 through the shortest line meaning you have to take perfect lines and hit the inside of every turn. There were a lot of turns on this course and that was not possible with the people around.

Yeah, but a GPS watch isn't as accurate as the course measurement tools either so you've got several types of 'errors' that may be compounding or balancing one another out.
In any event, congrats again! Any plans to work on half marathons in the future then?

Whoa... congrats to our marathoners!
Anyway, just wanted to pop in and post the log from my beer mile yesterday: http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/671338005
Conditions were ~42F and sunny - perfect. I drank Shotgun Betty by Lone Rider. First beer went down in ~10 seconds and I was feeling good. Got halfway around before the next person left - a really hot and nice female triathlete somebody knew. Second beer... uh oh. This doesn't taste so good. Still left first. Third beer... oh geez... I don't want to do this anymore.
Finally got around and had the fourth beer. Hot tri lady was right on my tail and was drinking fast. After about 50 yards, I had to stop so as to not puke, and she passed me. I recovered and decided there was no choice but to go for it and I started sprinting. I was a quarter length behind her and knew I couldn't catch her but I was hoping to push her into puking. In a spectacular backfire, I pulled onto the grass about 50 yards short of the finish, and about 2 liters of beer foam came chundering out of my mouth. Everyone said I looked like one of those foaming soap dispensers. So I had to take a penalty lap, and I finished just after the second place guy. Ended up third out of a field of 6.
Fun thing to do with your friends if you have a track to use.

Congrats on the marathon finish Ludite! As far as the distance, showing 26.6 isn't bad at all. My last one showed over 27, that was rough!
I know some people doing the half and full this weekend, I hear the Disney races are really good!

I'm not sure if you're asking about what type of nutrition is required to avoid the wall... which sometimes isn't related to nutrition leading up to or during the race itself.
As Chris previously pointed out, and as I'm learning this time around, it has more to do with teaching the body how to run and burn energy while exhausted. A few back-to-back longer runs will teach the body to burn fat vs. depleting glycogen on the longer runs. I believe typical glycogen storage is only good for 16-20 miles, hence the wall faced by many of us.
