as a member of the 'heavy sweater' crew, I have no business in a 100% cotton shirt on a hot day, it's coming off and it will obliterate my nips also

however, I also dont try to run 100 miles in a clip

I always bandaid my nips on long runs, so chafage isn't an issue.

I prefer to run shirtless as well, but I can't do that while wearing a pack like I will be at Angeles Crest. The idea is to keep the wetness on my skin and not let the wicking happen. I'll be carrying one bottle specifically for dousing myself. I'll have an ice bandana on as well. Fill at aid stations and let it melt and drain inbetween them.

Running shirtless is so much better, but unless it's hot as hell out, I tend not to do it. I feel like a moron running down a busy street shirtless on a 70 degree day.

Even in winter, I'll run and be cold as hell and still soak my shirts.

On my regular circuit, I somehow managed to cycle into the middle of a race. Cop said something to me, couldn't hear, so ignored and kept going. In hindsight, I think she said I was going the wrong way. A few blocks later, I'm climbing a hill behind ten cyclists. Another cop at the top guiding me right, I laughed and said I'm not part off this, I'm going the other way.

Turns out there is a 50/100/165k race going on through my regular city, country, town route.

Still here. Still running. Knocked out a 14 miler Saturday. Getting ready for the Spartan Beast in September.

Looks like I'm going to do another Ragnar Relay So Cal race with the club. Some of you ultra guys should seriously consider doing one...

Signed up for Javelina Jundred again this October. Looking for some redemption from my mental DNF last year. On the heels of a very successful Angeles Crest, I'm feeling pretty confident and may even shoot for that 20 hour finish ultrasignup has me predicted at. \:o

^^ Dude, congrats on getting into Boston!

Keeping this thread alive. Wrapped up a couple of events the last couple weeks. Santa Monica Classic 10K, and the Spartan Beast in Pala.

The Santa Monica Classic runs along most of the final 3 miles of the LA Marathon. About the first 3.7 miles is uphill before turning around to go back. Met up with a few members of the run club who are doing this as part of the Conquer LA challenge. It was a bit muggy but I really enjoyed the course. I think I placed around 210 overall and 20th in my AG.

I got suckered into doing another Spartan Beast with a friend who is really into these types of obstacle races. The course went around Pala Motocross Raceway and vicinity. They advertise a little over 12 miles. But participants who had GPS were claiming around 14-14.5. Lots of challenging obstacles with good variety between strength and endurance.

I felt much more prepared this time. Had a decent camelpack, supplies, and hand/arm/knee protection. And combined with my ongoing strength training, I was able to tackle most obstacles with a bit of effort. For me it was an awesome experience. Others... not so much. Ended up helping quite a few people on the course who were either dehydrated or cramping from lack of sodium. I wasn't really going for time... more to help make sure my friend finished in one piece lol. If I do this type of race again, I think I will need to focus more on grip strength. Another friend suggested working in more lifts/pulls using my own body weight.

Next race is the Rock n Roll Half Marathon followed by the Dana Point Turkey Trot. Then I kick up training for the Pasadena Half and LA Marathon next year. And cap it off with another Ragnar Relay in April.

howd u do in the 10k /updating files \:D

me: I am wondering if I'm about to run a half on pure injury taper lol. been biking/swim/surfing a bit so maybe some cardio is still there. Might want to switch to the 10k option though. I presume if I do the SJ RnR half in 2 weeks it will go like the last 2 times I ran it:

somethings wrong, pace too fast for the conditions, hit the wall around mile 8/9, zero respect for the heat, be generally miserable till the end \:D

I'd like to do a 45:nn 10k or a 1:45-ish half should I be able to run it per Dr's advice/MRI results this week.

Preparing myself for an UBER short training week.
now-thurs: nothing
fri: easy 5k
Sat: inventory check, easy 5k
Sun: final long run lol-->10k easy
mo: swim
tues:bike+5k easy
wed: swim
thurs: either 5k @ 10K pace [~7:20/mi ish] or at half pace [~7:45/mi ish]
fri: 5k easy w/strides lol
sat: nada
Su: 'race'

^^might be too aggressive given if you include my 3-week marathon taper, I basically havent done any 'regular/normal' running since the 1st week of July lol

I'm probably just fooling myself as my prognosis will most likely be 'no run for u' \:\|

been rolling up my biking towards ~100 mpw and havent been having any ill effects as far as my hip goes that I can tell

Thanks Kent. I'm excited to go back and am hoping we get some good weather.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of running fast again though. My body is nicely in tune with a 9ish minute pace which will hopefully serve me well at Javelina Jundred next month, but anything beyond that "run all day" pace seems like a lot of work, lol.

Stickaz - 47:15 I think. Not quite as good as the 44:xx PR from November.

I think you could do a 43-44 min 10K with a good few months of training (after nursing that injury of course). \:D

we'll see, I figure 44:59 is no problem at all with the races I've already recorded this year [outside shot at 43:nn imo], if it werent for taking nearly 2 months off at this point lol. also if my hip barks at me I'll probably just walk off course/DNF so theres that...

eg sore is ok, pain is not. after my treadmill 3 miler last night my butt is sore. I can live with that lol. I'll target 7:20/mi pace in the race and see what happens. Based on past results I'll actually have to start in wave 1 lol shocker [~3k participants], if I start in wave 2 or worse honestly there will probably be strollers 5 wide across the street and walkers and all that lol. It looks like the 10k goes at turkey trot speed

unfortunately I dont think I have a particularly good chance of running the entire 10k at that pace pain free, if it starts to be painful and not just sore I'll walk off. bleh. No way to really judge the likelihood of that happening...

I need to sneak in some mile repeats at 10k pace also as a tuneup... hmm

Update: survived a flat dirt trail run just now for a 6x800 workout with 60s walk breaks in between in 95* heat this afternoon, I haven't done any speed work since maybe early June I guess? I held 7:00/mi pace fairly easily although I was sweating pretty heavily and may have to burn those shorts

Cautiously optimistic that I won't be limping tomorrow morning, my hip feels totally normal. The only thing that 'hurt' on this test run was my quads which I take as a great sign

I wasn't trying to improve my fitness any, just five days out I wanted to know if my body could tolerate my proposed 10k pace. Looks good IMO

I'll probably back off to 7:20/mi for the actual race tho and look to negative split the back half as I'm rolling in fairly undertrained and haven't worked hard on my feet since July

But felt good to be able to move a little bit without any pain ESP given the oppressive heat. Race day on Sunday supposedly will be 30* cooler Wewt, but still a little above optimum but I'm not complaining..

CN: seems like I can tolerate
A) running hard/'fast'
B) I seem to not have any lingering pain
C) kinda stoked that I might be able to get back into running at least 10-15 mpw here fairly soon

my 10K results

damn I suck. 47:31

22:38 first 5k, 'brought it home' in 24:53, including a :25s walk through the water stop at mile 4.2

7:09
7:06
7:28
8:04
8:08
7:50
7:54 [final 0.2]

not sure what to say, it's a PR lol, and I'm not as fast as I wish I was. This was my first experience running in wave '1' of anything like this [towards the back] and I ended up 'locking' on to runners I had no business locking on to. I wanted to target 7:20/mi pace or so with possibly a 7:30 first mile followed by negative splits but it wasnt in the cards.

So I have yet another datapoint that suggests I cant really extrapolate from my 5K PR to longer races my 5K PR suggests I could run 6:57--7:03 for a 10k, I was thinking maybe that means I could go 7:20-ish if not a hair faster, and I failed to even execute on that aggressive plan by getting caught up w/faster runners. Oh well lol.

I'm still quite retarded as I'm actually injured and my pre-race plan involves NAISD's and icepacks, as well as post-race [hip]

thanks, I guess I just wish I was able to 'stick to the plan' and pace properly [7:20?], oh well. I kinda wanted to risk it tho so I guess I deserve it.

anyways: I'm changing my mind again. I think I need to stop running and just do ellipitcal or something for now. Something aint right.

Starting PT. Did some foam rolling before/after a light treadmill 3.3 miler at like 8:57/mi pace and stuff wasnt feeling good. Hard to pin down, but possibly in/around my problem area. I had also biked hard that day and my quads still hurt from sundays 10k. Anyways I guess I'll take another 6 weeks off or something. Gah. Kinda concerned I'm making things worse for myself.

jogged 4.5 miles last week \:D

this week I guess I'll go with what PT/my doc suggests which is probably either:

a)nothing, or
b)very little

was thinking 30-40 minutes of easy treadmill T, Th, and Sa or Su I guess
seems to be the only thing that doesnt leave me sore.

yay. lol

Currently waiting to hear if I got lucky in the London Marathon ballot, have already registered to run Brighton Marathon next April as well.

I should hear from London Marathon today

I Only started running/fitness training in April this year and loving it.
I'm cycling, running and doing bootcamp...loving the improvements.

welcome!

I had PT last night, felt great during [plus the therapist was a HOT chick, damn]

anyways my hip got sore in the place I wish it didnt [my injury] after.

Eg, typical quackery is my fear here. Oh well, learned a bunch of cool hip stretches and got objective feedback that regardless of whatever my injury is/is not, my hip flexibility in specific is holding me back

/me stretches furiously

Got this email yesterday afternoon:

Full focus on Brighton Marathon now, without worrying about being able to do two within two weeks of each other.

Bootcamp was good last night, tight left hip flexor now though so stretching it ooff in office as we speak

cool, I managed a 5K treadmill last night after some stretches and a warmup, right about 9:00/mi pace and my HR was pegged in/around 122 [zone 1 I guess]

I take that as a good sign. Today its a little sore in the hip area, but I'm not limping. I dunno what to think lol. Maybe I'm slowly getting better. On the treadmill my hip flexor on the 'bad' side was making its presence known a little bit, but it didnt hurt or anything.

sigh. lol

thats cool you're entering a 'major' marathon, I am now leaning against a BQ attempt but I dont want to remove it from a possibility if I get over this hip thing. Of course to BQ I'd actually have to RUN a marathon again which I'm leaning against ever doing again at this point lol.

After some internal debate...I think I'm going to go for another BQ at Boston in April. That means once I finish (and recover from) Javalina 100 in 2.5 weeks, it'll be back to the roads and *gasp* speedwork till March. I'm also thinking of signing up for my first road half in like 4 years and going for a PR at the Surf City half in Feb.

Boston Qualifier. It's the time you have to run (depending on age and sex) in order to get into the Boston Marathon.

I feel like I'm coming back from having a stroke or car accident or something \:\(

feels like I'm learning how to run again. Different soreness, occasional pain, really strange. Injuries suck. I'm not even quite back to 10 mpw yet \:\|

I *could* run a solid 5k/10k at race pace right now I guess, but stuff just doesnt feel right. I dont think I'll be adding a 'long slow' run for a few months still

I think you should to sort out that injury before going back full time. I see a lot of runners try to power through these type of issues with ill consequences.

Take a break and live to run another day.

I've had good luck dealing with injuries by cycling more, foam rolling and lots of stretching. I've probably said that in this post already though.

Update: nearly fractured my wrist during PT yesterday lol from stuff like this (rotating a lot of body weight around on a wrist), didn't hurt until like 4am when I noticed I had zero pain free range of motion in my dominant hand

That was a fun urgent care visit. Now I also can't swim lol

dont forget to subtract the 2-3 mins from the 'standard' to be assured of getting in lol [varies every year, is on a trend currently of tightening, mostly IMO due to fewer entries avail because of greater charity slots]

I'm a longshot as all fuck because I need to go 3:22--3:23 in my AG when I age up [but you can qualify like a year early to your next AG lol loophole], but my half PR [hilly/SF] is 1:47 so I obviously have to speed the fuck up as my marathon PR [well, just trying to finish] was a hair over 4H lol so I have a long way to go. That and being injured presently are not a good combo to get there. 2017 not looking good lol. Might be able to sneak a 3:3n:00 if the stars align for me next year and I can resume running where I left off pre-hip injury. That still leaves me a solid 10-15m off the requirements. Maybe 2018 lol?

This whole line of reasoning is SUPER optimistic of course. I demonstrate over and over whenever I try that my 1 mile, 2 mile, 5K 'speed' doesnt translate well to my 10k or half or full performances so I would have to figure out how to get much more mileage in I am sure to fix that issue, far more marathon specific training, threshold and long runs and all that that I actually cant do anymore $because_injured. Otherwise I seem to have no chance whatsoever as for instance my 5K is trending sub 20:00 which would suggest a BQ isnt a big deal but I'm really ~30+ minutes off from that goal

Rumor is that they will be adjusting (tightening) qualifying times again in the next year or two.
