A little more DOF!!! That's a great pic! Thanks and thanks for mentioning the DOF. After reading your post, I watched a Youtube video on DOF. It explained quite a lot. I also looked up those red winged black birds. Apparently only the males have the colors on their wings like that. They must have spotted a female in the sky. lol
When you've got two subjects like that, try to put the focal point between them to use as much of the dof as possible (note the bit of in-focus wood in front of the front bird). The general rule is that the dof is 1/3 before the focal point and 2/3 after, but in practice it sometimes seems closer to 50/50.
And here's a female red-winged blackbird for you:

Yup, male birds tend to be the colourful ones. My parents have 2 pairs of Orioles at their place this year. Such an awesome bird..

Me too. I have some wider (17mm) + vertical shots taken from all over that bridge and those apartments to the left. I'm trying to narrow 160 pics down to 3-5, but I like them all.
There was a camera crew there for this guy.

Thanks for the tip on the DOF. I'll remember that. I think it would have helped too if I'd been at F 11 or so instead of wide open at F 6.7.
That picture of the female is beautiful! It is amazing how much she differs from the male of that species.

$8000 Sachtler tripod right there. And some sort of Panasonic camera...can't tell which model, they all look the same from the "driver's side."
Another one from Rocky Mountain National Park
View from Pikes Peak's peak. (Elevation 14,110')
shit is bananas, if you've never been. We had a Nissan Versa rental and it made it up. Barely. Interestingly, they stop you about half-way back down the mountain to check brake temps with a pyrometer. He was "blown away" that my brakes were under 100 degrees, since I just coasted the whole way down in "L."
I saw one guy pouring bottled water on his hot brakes after he was told to cool them down a while. I wonder how bad they cracked with that move.

Yeah, right around 10k' is where you really start to feel the lack of oxygen. In RMNP, we took a stroll uphill @ around 12,000ft., maybe about a 1/4 mile up a paved pathway, and it was downright challenging. I had to stop a couple times to gather myself, and that was a simple walk. RMNP was surprisingly chilly, and had thick snow in places.
Driving off the side is still very possible...I don't know how those dudes race up that thing. It was cool to see a the skidmarks on the pavement.
