I use Kino-flo and Kino-flo Diva-lites all the time for lighting talking heads....
For video.
bob!
Do people commonly use flourescents for still portraits? Guess they'd be perfectly adequate if not battling the sun or lots of windows.

I wouldn't say it's "common," but I know some folks use constant lighting for portraits. I want them for cars.

I dont own these. This was shot at RIT in school. just diggin up old shit guys and gals This was probably taken 7 years ago lol
And i LOVE the way they give a soft light. You need to have them close or use a higher ISO/slower shutter for it though. here is another from the same shoot. I like the softness of the lighting.

Kinos can do a really nice job of giving you a nice big soft source, even though it's direct. They even make big 8 bank models, and I remember setting up a "wall o light" once, but I don't remember how many 4' tubes were in that. Only problem is, is that they are hard to control, sometimes.
If you want to keep it off the background, goodluck with that. Better have a grip truck outside.

Yea see the coolest thing for cars is that they don't move like people do... So instead of bumping the ISO, you just shoot a long exposure and the the Kino just kind of "paint" it all in, for lack of a better word. Think of light painting on its most basic level, and remove all the faggotry that places like Flickr have brought into the realm of what light painting truly is, and then you'll see why I want to use them. I shot an interesting project in our studio at work with my Civic. I used the big light bank and strobes, but I also brought in a crappy fluorescent bulb fixture I found (lol) and the results were actually a lot cooler than I had hoped for, although I have not even started to put the shots together yet because I'm too swamped FTL. I'm hoping to finally get after at least one of them this weekend, I will post up in a few days.

yes, they do show up on every shot I took last night.
Were they long exposures on a tripod or typical handheld exposures?

Try shooting a few other types of shots. Daylight, hand held, low/high ISO. If the pixels show up in all of them, time to send it in for repair, or upgrade.

Caught this guy having lunch in my parents backyard. I started off about 200 feet away and slowly approached. I got as close as about 50ft, it squawked at me and flew off. A lot of noise and cropped 100%. The day was very overcast and so the colors didn't turn out too well, obviously. I tried bumping in post, but this was the best I could do.
