Thanks the comments Mike! I'd love to get something nice and fast around the 30mm range. I love the 50mm f1.8 but in a boat it gets a little tight on a crop sensor.. I'll have to start bringing the 10-22mm with me as well. It's a bit slower, but I can get retard close to things with it as long as there is a decent amount of light out.

What are you trying to accomplish? I'd think something like the 17-55 2.8 would fit your needs wonderfully and give you a lot of play room if you wanted something faster then the 10-22. I love my 10-22 but for something with tons of detail I'd grab my 17-55 over it... It's not cheap but if you plan to stay in a crop sensor it's an amazing lens for the price (especially comparing price to EF lenses like the 16-35).

Kevin, the problem with taking pics of fish is that they rarely ever sit still for you. So waiting around for the 10-22mm (unless it's in full sunlight) usually leads to a fuzzy pic. I like the 50mm, but for close up shit in tight quarters, it's just a bit too long. I'd love something I could stuff into the fishes face, snap a quick pic (even in somewhat crappy light) and have a decent pic as a result.

17-55IS will do it. Sure it's not 1.8 fast but the IS makes up for it. I really need to use mine more but I did take about 300 pictures at the USAF museum and for as dark as it was, the 17-55 was incredible.

No doubt, the lens is a light vacuum with the IS. I've have mine for a year now, but it still doesn't have anything on a prime for high shutter speeds. Plus it is not small or something I'd want to take fishing since it huffs and puffs air (& water?) into the camera and is as nose heavy as crap.

Here's a picture to go with the thread.

Here's one from my 17-55. f2.8, 1/15sec, ISO 1600.

Yeah, 1/15sec is really easy with the 17-55. Almost all of my highest rated pics on flickr were taken with it.

This photo was taken with the 17-55. It's from a recent trip to the aquarium, and is #1 out of the 450 or so images in my photostream.

Don't you have a zoo or something with an aquarium? Our zoo aquarium is sort of week'ish' but they do have those floating cow manatees in a big ass tank. I've actually never been to the big local aquarium.

I'd kill for a large aviary (or any dedicated aviary) around here, but I think the closest thing are a few small ones at Zoo Atlanta. Guess I'm going to have to go find the damn birds for myself in their environment(s). \:D

You'd like the aquarium, but it feels like I'm done after an hour or two. Last time I forced myself to hang around some exhibits waiting for shot opportunities. It's a surreal feeling to go there on a Tuesday when no kids are running around. Very few people surrounded by fish everywhere with a crazy, color changing lobby complete with a stingray petting pool. I'll have to see if I got a good pic of the open area between the exhibits later.

See the HUGE seams in the main window? That's what makes capturing an image difficult in that room for me. The glass is like 2ft thick as well.

That's exactly like ATL's tank.

They used the exact same design for the ATL aquarium, then. Even the underwater tunnel is in the same spot.

Let me edit some crap...

lol, i'm sure they're mostly the same. shooting through 2ft glass (plastic?) i'm sure isn't easy. your pics come out good though.

they need like stadium seating and you can just go in there and sit like a movie theater and watch, haha

I'd love to get back to an aquarium. I took my daughter a few months ago, but that was hectic lol.

Bill, the 17-55IS 2.8 is like 1100, look at the Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC, it's like 650, or you could probably buy it used cheaper. I read that the non-VC version is sharper/faster than the VC version. I'm looking at that as a possible replacement for my 18-55 kit lens.

A knock-off 17-55 is a good idea for fishing. No loss if it's dropped over the side of the boat.

Good pic - love the colors. Only thing I don't like is how the actual frame itself starts to really separate as it goes out of focus (it actually might be one of the cables but it makes it seem like the frame is).

I've been playing around with IS mode 2 on my 100-400 a little. Need to really get out to a car racing event with it but I'm getting better on people running.
