Looks like it was a long night in Mordor!
That is a really neat picture and makes me want to travel to Colorado. I love how big mountains like that, it feels like you are right up against them. Yet, they are so big that one is tens of miles away in reality.

These are the Tetons, taken about 20 minutes out from Jackson, WY. A truly amazing part of the country, but such severe weather in that state...it's understandable why it's so un-populous. I-80 winds and blowing snow across the roadway FTL.
This picture is very mildly touched...it really did look like this. We literally were like OMG, we have to stop and snap pix of this. Combination of conditions and good timing...it was pretty gray and miserable out until we came down into the valley and saw this sight.

Did you get anywhere near Devils Tower National Monument while visiting? I have always been mesmerized by it since first seeing Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
As funny as it sounds, we did a one-nighter run up there for some TV work, and then came right home. Just a quick 8-9 hour drive each way. We did a couple interviews in the Elk preserve outside of town, shot some b-roll of the town and basically had no time for anything aside from business. I hear crews out of Denver head up there pretty frequently, so sounds like I'll be back there a lot.

the lights in the club were KILLING my exposures. I'm not use to shooting around laser lights, i'd have the shot composed, then fire, and would get a different result due to all of the flashing lights and other crap. I tried no flash and 6400 ISO and it was just too slow. Had a hard time last night....

I like that photo. Not too shabby. That was a good scene to take a picture of.

Thanks dude I was happier with how my camera captured color close up than how it does on far away stuff... doesn't seem as vibrant with further away shots. For instance, this tree seems a lot brighter when Im just looking at it IRL.
Shoot in raw and you can add all the vibrance/color/color changing you want with PS, LR, or any other good photo editing program. This is the big benefit of shooting in RAW.

For instance, this tree seems a lot brighter when Im just looking at it IRL.
What your eye doesn't notice is that the sky is a LOT brighter than the tree. So your camera tries to give you a correct exposure of the entire scene and the tree gets darker as a result. You could expose just for the leaves, but then your sky will likely get blown out to white/almost white.
Maybe it's the saturation that's bugging you, but you can turn that up in post, even when shooting jpeg - just remember that a little boost goes a long way, there's no reason for your world to look irradiated.

lol @ irradiated! Awesome. yeah thanks for the tips/info guys.... I was just a little surprised that my indoor pics seem to come out *SO AWESOME* compared to my P&S, I expected my yellow tree pic to be brilliant (literally and figuratively). Bill was saying my camera can do raw+jpg at the same time, as soon as I finish with these exams I'm going to read that fucking book and tinker with minor edits in photo editing programs.
This is my new favorite forum on clubsi.

Definitely read the book once through and grasp what you can. Then go back and pick a section and play with your camera to see what happens until you know it back and forwards.
Also just go out and do tests. I would just go sit in my garage and play with a setting until I was blue in the face, go to the computer and see what things did, and then do it again but focusing on what was working.
For example, to learn how ISO effects things, I'd put my camera on my tripod, lock the aperture, start at ISO 100, and each photo up ISO one setting and see what the speed did then check on the computer. Next I'd go down and set the speed, start at ISO 100, and see what the aperture did. I actually did this for something dark (my 350Z sitting in the dark garage) and something bright (my Xterra sitting in the driveway). After doing those sets, I saw what was working best, went back and take the best of both trials and set it in manual and see where the camera wanted the ISO via the light indicator. I then would increment up and down some.
Sounds like a lot of work when in reality each test maybe took 3-5minutes. In 30 minutes I had a good feel for what my camera would do with ISO and where and what to avoid with it.
BTW - I repeated this test with different lenses as telephoto lenses versus wide angle lenses have similar effects but typically require more ISO/time/open aperture on the telephoto side.
This also built good fundamental skills on how to adjust quickly with my camera.
Yeah I read things in books, but actually teaching it to myself via playing built what I feel is good building blocks for me.

Yeah, I was thinking of doing this earlier... seems like my favorite lens review site does a lot of side-by-side comparisons at different lengths/iso's and that seems to be the most informative way to figure out what does what, I just have to replicate that on a much more intense scale once I get a little free time.
If you have time to read this, you have time to play with the camera - lol. It's a learning curve, a huge learning curve. One I'm still in - lol. One most people are always in...
The problem really is once you learn something, you learn you want to learn something else. Then you get into post processing which is really what separates then Nates and Dougs from most...
