This is one of my favorites. Not tack sharp though, but almost close enough. But not really. It was the best Nate impression I could pull off

DAT BACKLIGHT DOE. (...new crop?) Nate true, true. Maybe a crop, I'll have to play around. May not be sharp enough. May be. I don't know. Fried from work. Have to go home and drink it out of me, have a real paid shoot for a bike shop tomorrow morning.

Duc, if it's sharp enough, I'd crop the shit out of that pic. 70% of the frame is filled with useless stuff..

nate, I need to read one of your tutorials. i'm hating the appearance of my pictures. i'm looking to get the type of appearance that you did for the TRD shoot that you posted
A lot of it is in the light... Most of the TRD Pro shots that I like the best are backlit right as the sun was setting, with lots of flare, dust flying around, and shit like that. There's not really any "tutorial" I can give on that other than to be more aggressive with your shooting.
But there's another bigger part of me that feels like I should tell you learn the basic rules first, and THEN learn how to break them.
The shot posted above... What time of day? Where is the sun? Where's the center point of the shot? The main question I have is, "why?" In the sense that the shot doesn't grab the attention of the viewer quickly. The place you were standing, the lens you were using, the angle the sun was at... Change all of that next time and I think you'll start to see more of what you want to see.
Nate

I think you'd be better off with something like a 70-200 f4 L to be honest.

My biggest problem with this picture is everything, and I mean everything (except for maybe 3 trees, lol), is leaning left. You very well may have had the camera perfectly level, but when the hill goes left, the road leans left, the vehicle leans left, and most of the trees lean left... all I can do is tilt my head to the left.
My next issue is it's too much nothing, and a tiny bit of action. A crop will help it some. Just cropping the top off will help it a little, along with some rotation.

cost would kill me initially.
where I was at in relation to the course (right on the side line), one of the guys that I was with got some great shots with their 40mm pancake and using a t5i

What's a 50mm f1.4 sell for? A used 70-200 F4 can't be very far behind.

I suggest the 85mm f/1.8 over the 50 f/1.4 to be honest. Or just stick with the nifty fifty.
But with action shots like this appears to be, i'd look at the 70-200 f/4 as well because it is relatively inexpensive for what you get and will be much more versatile.
but none of this will matter until you work on your exposure, composition, timing and THEN your post processing.

Is this yours as well?
https://flic.kr/p/nbQeTk
Way more interesting shot imo, just from browsing through the photostream.
I'm not even half as good as most of the guys on here but here's my $.02 anyway.
I think you should have gotten closer, either with a longer zoom, more cropping, or simply positioning yourself closer to the side of the course. You're trying to take a picture of the truck hauling ass, not the trees half a mile away, right? So crop down on the truck, zoom in, or get closer to it so it fills the frame more.
Same with this guy https://flic.kr/p/na6ahk
cool truck, lots of mud flying... and yet its mostly a photo of a big wide open muddy field. Is that what you wanted to take, a picture of a field with a truck going across it? Or did you want to take a photograph of the truck going across the field?
I think with the stuff you're trying to shoot, you need longer reach. 18-55 is ok for close up work, and I love my 18-135 lens as a general walkaround (Pentax), but every time I go somewhere with action that's further than 10-20yds away I wish I had a 55-300 (or a DA* 60-250 if money was no object). The primes are fine and fun, I love my 50mm 1.7 and 28mm f/2.8, but I'm not taking them to shoot fast moving trucks or stuff relatively far away.

I agree with this. And I love my 85 1.8... It's not as nice as a 70-200... but it does a good job:
Taken last week (85mm, f/2.8, 1/2000sec, ISO 100) ~ I wish I would have shot it at f4, oh well.:
