In my opinion, much like unsharp mask, the high pass filter needs to be treated with caution and restraint.
Yeah, I've already over done it a few times.. It really depends on the type of pic though (Atleast this is what I've found after messing around with a dozen or so fishing pics in the last 30mins)
Here's one I tweaked with highpass and a few other things. I love this pic!

Are you thinking there is a bit to much pop on the top of the net and the fishes back? I reduced it down to 40, but it only softened it up a bit.

That's been the best single PS tip I've been given yet, instant results!  Duplicate layer > Filter > Other > HighPass > Set for 3-5 pixels > Layer blending mode to Overlay

kinda soft on the tire text, which is what stands out most to me. I think if you make that your focus then other parts of the vehicle can be a little soft without being really obvious. fil: your designer buildings pic, break it down for me, pleeeaaase /begs  it's hot like fire The whole image is kinda soft. Duplicate layer > Filter > Other > HighPass > Set for 3-5 pixels > Layer blending mode to Overlay. BAM! Sharper image... Interesting and thanks. Here's the results at pixel size 4.  Why did the color go all crazy? I changed nothing else.
The paint on the fender and door looks grainier, and the roof rack looks more pixelated...not so sure I'm a fan of the effect. I guess it could be useful every now and then, but that'll hardly become a regular part of my workflow.

Here's my ugly mug. This is my first attempt at portrait photography with my lights. Now I just need to learn where to place them:
I had the key light at 7 o'clock, background light right behind me, and the flash on camera. (am I even using the right terms?) Flash was 1/64 power, should have pumped it up a bit to dispell some of the shadow. I later moved the background light to my 3 o'clock and it exposed the pictures better, but they were too out of focus to post. Now I just need to buy a background and light meter, start taking pics and start charging for portraits!!! I already have a few friends requesting I take headshots for their portfolios and portraits of their kids... this thing is getting big quicker than I imaged...I still have A LOT to learn though...
EDIT: Yes, my nose is really that jacked up... one drunken night...

also, think about the blown out white shirt collar. White's probably the worst color for this, but if you must shoot a white garment, try to flag the light off the shirt some. Once you get your lighting set down, you'll maybe want to look into flags, nets and c-stands for light control.
