Put like that, most people would say why. But besides the stings, I can feel the gratification from completing it. Awesome job man.

On a separate note, I could not believe my eyes running today. About 100 yards up from me on my run today I saw a person run down under a running path bridge. I was confused why as there is no trial there. As I got closer I saw a girl quickly pulling up her pants. I adverted my eyes, but as I got even closer my nose advised me to just what happened. Vindication men, we are not alone.

Lol, i'd written that 6 hours after finishing, after 3 hours of drive, and after 20 hours of being awake.

It was hard. But awesome. Most people shouldn't do it.

Y eah fuck that lol. But good job

Sidenote: not sure I can race the half distance anymore after swearing off runs over about 10k for about 18 months now. Perhaps not a huge surprise

Oh well seem to have been the cost of getting my Achilles healthy. Totally worth it

Ran a pretty shit half yesterday and was having all kinds of niggles lol. Stopped like 4 times for water, nbd I was planning on it but I dunno. Maybe it was the heat that got to me. Just lack of practice at the distance recently I guess

Ran my longest run to date today. 20 miles, did it in 3:05, for a ~9:15 pace. But that is a little deceiving, the first 15 miles were at an ~8:30 pace, and the last 5 miles things started to fall apart. I am sure it was a mix of poor sleep from having the kids solo this week, and shorter training sessions for the same reason. I was doing 1 GU/Waffle every 5 miles and hydrating as normal, just hit the wall early. I am actually glad I had this experience, so it would give me an idea of how it would feel if it happens on race day. I need to keep it a bit slower in the beginning, I am think 9:00/mile, so if the wall does come, it is later than mile 20.

I will do a 15-16 mile run next week, then a 24-25 miler the week after that, and then taper down until my 50k race on Nov. 10. Excited and nervous.

FWIW, that's faster than I run long shits.

I run SLOW

Like 9 for easy runs
closer to 10s for LSRs

The thing is most 50ks aren't going to go much faster than 10 if you're new or it's flat. Don't beat yourself up in training.

just my opinion.

Lol if I went first 15 miles at 8:30 in anything that's like a race pace workout for me. (Current half PR is 1:43 from a year and a half ago back when I did more of that stupid distance stuff)

I'd consider a run like that proof I'm good to go. I can't tolerate more than like 6 miles at planned half RP

For a thon right around 13-14 miles at RP is a virtual destructor workout imo

Like doing 3x1 Mile repeats at current 5k capability on 60s rest is a tremendous ly hard workout. Most cheat and add :10s/ mi to survive

fuck that. I do a full 2-3 min rest between 1200-1600m 5k repeats. I did 11 miles with 5x1200m@5k repeats last night, and it destroyed me.

10 tonight. 14 tomorrow. 8 Saturday. Last real long run, 20 miler, on Sunday. THEN WE BEGIN TO TAPER.

Compared to the 5k pace, the 3 mile cooldown was easy

Yeah I'm ready to taper. I'm tired of the 60-70 miles per week that I've been doing; plus, we just moved to a new house, so I'm wanting to do a bunch of reno shit, but haven't had the time because of the training. Ah well, 3 weeks til the marathon!

Endurance bike races

I suck at aero
I suck at cycling
too much gear

I had fun on the gravel ride this weekend. 60 miles of slop/rocks is a good/easy-ish weekend.

Mtn bike endurance racing? Now that I could get behind.

So I don't have a MTN bike today, but this might be the final straw to make me get one. There's not great riding in town, some solid shit 1 hour out or even more so 90 mintues (Hood River).

Ok, so this seems like quintessential XC bike domain, but is trail a good enough compromise that it would work? I've read some XC bikes are making use to clever geometry to really crush even more aggressive terrain (light lift served) but still using a bit lighter components/ shorter travel. Basically blurring the artifical line. That seems like the sweet spot, right?

Tough to say. I’ve only ever done one of the NUE series races, the lumberjack 100, and I did it on a hardtail.
I’d say full suspension is a must these days. If you are in it to win it you would want an XC style bike, if you are out there to have fun and want an all around good bike for other riding I’d say a 4” bike is the sweet spot. I think going to a 5” “trail” bike for these races is a bit too much. These races are typically well above 10,000 feet of elevation gain, the bigger bike just might get too bulky and cumbersome.

It seems harder to find a full suspension 4" bike. Seems like more and more they're going 5" (120-140) on trails and fork only for 4". I'll look more.

This got me looking at some short mtn bike races. THere's a 6 race series, seems like "long" course is 90 minute-120 minute time.

Did my last speedwork for the training plan. 10k time trial to see where I'm at. All race predictors say that race equivalent to a 3:00 marathon is a 6:15 pace for 10k. My times today?

I am super encouraged by my time. Negative splits to boot!

I feel like the works done charlie

either it'll be a good day or it won't, but you've prepared as best as you can. That's a hella impressive effort.

I saw an ultra runner stay something like. Don't stress about your race. The race is the celebration of the hard work you've done already. You can't control the way the day goes, or all the aspects of your body even. But you've done the work, you should enjoy being there. (which glosses over how much a race fucking hurts).

Rooting for you man.

Thanks for the support, man. I'm definitely in the best running shape I've ever been in, but I feel a lot of pressure, I won't lie. I've been ramping up my training since March for this one event. I've logged a lot of miles in some pretty shitty conditions...I really hope I at least BQ. Fingers crossed.

Today was the last long run of the training cycle. Did 17 at a 7:21 pace overall, felt strong/good. It's true taper from here. One more hardish workout, with 3x1 mile repeats.

Yeah, you have trained so much harder for your BQ qualifier than I have for this 50k in a few weeks. You should be feeling your proud of yourself. Good job. When is the race Charlie?

Today I did 16mi at what I think will be closer to race pace ~9:30/mi and it was sooo much smoother than that 20 miler a few weeks back at 8:30/mi. No struggle at the end, and had me feeling a lot better about the race.

Either you'll have a good day or not, you can't control it at this point.
It sounds like you've done what's needed, so it's really just a matter of the right day or wrong day.
Enjoy the suffer. I don't have hard marathon in me.

Hard half? or easy ultra, running hard for multiple hours can screw off.

Good luck man. I've heard they lowered the BQ times yet again for 2019. I guess this year was one of the largest gaps they had in history - 4:52 on average.

https://www.baa.org/2019-boston-marathon-qualifier-acceptances

I'm still around and enjoying my time with the run club. I'll probably be pacing my races a lot more this year and next, and doing a few road/trail/relay races when time allows. Next "big" race will be LA Marathon in 2019.

My work schedule has been crazy and haven't been checking CSI all that often. Good to see this thread is still alive.

Damn, you guys have all been training your asses off while I’ve just been getting fat and lazy.

Simply put: Western States destroyed me. Physically, mentally and emotionally. Not sure what was up with that considering Id run three hundos before it and was back to running in less than a week. I basically took the rest of the summer off from running. Like zero miles for July August and September. I enjoyed the time off, but I’m regretting it now as I feel horribly slow and out of shape as I try to get back into the swing of things.

Still....I’m planning on signing up for Black Canyon 100k in Feb (third year running it) and of course Way Too Cool 50k in March (7th year straight). Not sure what else beyond that. My States ticket count resets to one for this years lottery, so I doubt I’ll have to worry about that one!

The Way Too Cool is a lottery now, do you get auto selected since you compete every year? It's like 45 mins from my house and I am really considering it next year.

It’s been a lottery every year I’ve done it and I’ve never not been selected. I have a feeling it’s weighted towards return racers, or it could be that they just never have to turn anyone away. It’s regularily got a thousand or so starters.

It’s an awesome race for sure. Perfect time of year so it’s usually nice and cool, sometimes rain but most of the trail can handle it, beautiful views, perfect single track, water crossings, short technical sections, good climbs, lots of very runnable stuff. To me it’s pretty much the perfect 50k. You should definitely sign up!

For realsies, last somewhat tough workout done. 8 miles, with 3x1 mile repeats @ 5k pace.

Not sure what to do with myself now...having begun training in late March, and with nothing but shorter <7 mile recovery runs (minus a 13 miler on Sunday) from here to til the marathon, I am not accustomed to having so much free time or energy

Finally got off my ass and did kind of a race. Wasn't timed and I think their course was a little short lol.

5k for San Diego State Homecoming. When I got here, I didn't feel too great because it was mostly students who are about half my size.

Did better than I thought. Stupid race had a pretty nice hill on the home stretch and I got chick'd right at the end by some girls from the SDSU running team. Though I can't imagine they were going full effort.

That's a great pace for coming off the couch. I feel like any time I get back into it, that first run is a breeze. Then when I try to repeat that on the next run I fail horribly. How are you holding up now, sore?

Oh I'm not right off the couch.. I been running a couple times a week for awhile now hahaha. But I don't really push it anymore, so I'm usually around a low 9 minute pace these days.

So 8:26 is quick for me right now. No Ill effects. Though I did almost puke during the run lol.
