from here: http://mymarathonpace.com/Running_Calculators.html

plug in your own values

my discoveries

I race my 5k's at 10k effort
I raced my recent half at low-marathon HR range, but in the past I've been able to get it into the 'proper' range a couple of times
I have been able to get a 10k-PR-effort into the 10k range
Damn near all of my long runs are in easy/recovery range
I need to learn how to push my interval training much, much harder

I do find it interesting that I've never monitored my HR in any run.

But if I ever feel a need to improve, this looks like a useful tool.

this wont help you improve unless you are working with someone that really knows what they are doing and can put you on the right track based on your goals.

I'm afraid I'm going to explode trying to hit ~170 towards the end of a 5k and therefore holding about ~165 or so through miles 1.0--2.5 or so

I've never hit higher than upper 150s near the end \:\|

feel the bern. It will all be worth it if I can get the mediocre-hobby jogger goal of a sub 20:00 5k \:D

Oh you definitely have more left then. I think 150-160 is usually the aerobic zone. That's where you're putting forth good effort, but you can still talk and cruise at that HR.

You should be able to kick it up a gear or two to 180bpm for a short race like a 5k... It will feel for like you're gasping for life, but it ends quickly because 5k.
