Can someone give me a breakdown on airmiles...it seems to me as if it's the biggest scam ever.
I've been filling up with Shell since forever and started collecting airmiles 3 years ago...my premium gas fillups on average are 1 - 2 tanks a month. So for argument's sake, lets say it's 2 tanks of premium/month at $60 over 3 years, or ~$4,320 spent on 91 octane gas and collecting air miles.
Then one day I thought to myself I probably have a ton of airmiles, so let's start using them. Handed my card to Harpinder and told him I want to redeem airmiles for a carwash, now wait for it....wait.....waiting...."You don't have enough airmiles"
Ever since then I stopped *collecting*. DAFAQ
/admittedly I've never looked into how collecting airmiles works, the value proposition, etc.

Here's the new 'formula', nice and simple.. Do 5 washes @ Premium prices, and it's worth $10.

i'm by no means a points expert like others, but i do pay more attention than one should lol.
collecting airmiles the "traditional" way, you can be collecting for gerenartions and generations and you may be able to get a flight from Pearson to Hamilton.
Bonus events is where you really get your bang for buck.
Like furball mentioned, a regular fill up will net you 2AM, 3 if you have a huge premium guzzling car, but with with the bonus events which happens every other months for a 6 week period, you'll really see your points accumlate.
i buy gas once a week, prior to the beating gas prices took this last month, i spend an average of $80/fill up. That's 2AM but during bonus events when it was 10x, 20AM x 4 = 80AM a month during the bonus months. In around 14-16 months, I earn enough for a roundtrip flight to NYC (1150AM)
another one that really helped me get my point was i bought my computer during one of those bonus AM events where i get 20X the points through the Airmiles Mall. 1 AM for every $35 spent at Apple.ca, $1200 for the computer, and I got almost 800 points for that transaction. Throw on a few months of gas during bonus months, boom, another ticket to NYC.
the key with AM is not to save them for the long haul trips. earn them and use them quickly.

If I'm reading the T&C correctly, it's pretty much per transaction. So even if you bring a tanker, you're getting 20AM per transaction, end of story. * there is a minimum of course. Ii think they've upped the ante to 20x the points but calculate based on litres purchased vs dollar spent
the offer is 20X the Airmiles.
traditionally, i believe it's $30 for the first AM, and then 1 AM for every $20. with gas prices being so high, they were probably giving more points than they wanted...same reason Petro Points went to litres bought vs dollars spent a couple years ago.
not sure how they give out Airmiles now. I'm filling up tonight/this weekend, i shall report back.

wtf me too! so i gave up collecting them at the pump, but my insurance company started to give 1mile/$1, so i've hopefully been racking them up. i need to call and get another card; i figure i might aswell start collecting since my tanks of gas are $100 give or take at a time.
is it even worth it? or do i need like 50 million points to fly to flippin ottawa.

I don't know, I don't spend much money as is at establishments that give airmiles and no fucks given, i gave up on that scam. I get the whol bonus points events, but it's not like i can stock up on gas during promotions and then not buy it for the rest of the year Well I suppose I could.
Since I am too lazy for CC churning and simply don't have the interest or time to spend on it I stick to one card. My Capital One Aspite travel Mastercard, 2% travel cashback on all purchases made on card. Pays for all annual airfare between wife and i.

Too bad Kijiji doesn't offer Air Miles
As for the Capital One Aspire Travel Mastercard. I was reading it, the annual fee of $120 is fine as each year you get 10,000 bonus points for renewing ($100 value). I plan to make a switch soon when my Gold Visa is coming up for renewal on annual fee.
I was leaning toward TD Aeroplan Visa but I don't want to restrict to Air Canada only.

he probably puts EVERYTHING on his CC - his ult, cell bill, food, whores and blow.
only thing I dont think you can do is to put your mortgage payment on it - but that would be fucking sweet - put it through to get points and then pay it off monthly.

I put everything on my card except mortgage payment. But nowhere I am getting $2000 cashback rebate every year (at 2% according to Risky). To get close to $2000 rebate you need to spend close to $100,000 a year on the card. Do the math c2k
