Whelp, LA Half is done. They rerouted the last half of the course around 6th street construction. That added about 800ft of vert. But I felt fairly strong the entire race. Mile 11 was a heartbreaker. You can see the incline looming about a mile away lol. Everyone around me seemed to slowed down or walk that final incline.

I did better than I has expected @ 1:50:xx. About a minute off my OC Half PR. Runkeeper was totally off but here are some basic stats:

Thanks man. That vert is cumulative. Couple back-to-back trips through Hope & First St will do that.

No GPS watch, just the phone. I should probably pick up a weatherproof one for the Tri's.

Figure I'd post this here. Ran the marine corps marathon this past Sunday.

Got to the finish line late, missed my pace group by 10 minutes, so I had to fight through traffic for the first 8 miles or so, which explains the slower-than-I'd-like pace in the beginning. Still, I think it was a fairly strong showing. I'm hoping to get into the low 3:1x:00's next year, and maybe even go for a boston qualifying time (3:05:00).

Very nice, good & consistent pacing the whole way. How'd you like the MCM?

Love the MCM. The crowds are fantastic, and even though I live in DC, there's just something about running a race in the nation's capital.
That being said, you HAVE to make your pace group if you want to go out strong. 35000 runners=weaving in and out and fighting traffic for a while if you are late to the start.

Thanks!

I agree with your assessment; I think I can start off at a 7:50 or so and still maintain a negative split next time. Granted, I have a bit of work to do to get to BQ times, but I feel like I'm getting close. Fingers crossed for next year...or I can wait until I turn 35 and try for a 3:10 haha

Updating this thread. Knocked out another week of marathon training with a 6 mile tempo Wednesday, a 4 miler Friday, and 14 miles today. Going to keep with the back-to-back runs as long as my body allows lol.

pretty happy I just knocked 3 mins off my 10K PR [prior PR was in an oly tri tho so I figure it was just a matter of time]

was kinda hot out, maybe 80, bright sun, did this on a trail. HR looked about right [creeped up to about 160 at the end], looks like I conservatively paced it so I should be able to pull another minute or so out I think (?) dunno

first time ever going sub 50:00 in a 10k tho heh

51:20 PR 10K 4/15 48:22 10K PR 11/1/15

FAST!! That's almost on par with my 6-7 mile tempo runs. Keep that up and you'll be pushing 45 min 10Ks no problem.

wewt thanks. now I just need to tick off a 21:xx 5k this year and I'll have met all my running goals but for the half distance where I thought I could do 1:50 but wouldve accepted 1:52-1:54 and ended up at 1:57 /darnit

oh well. next year

I read somewhere last night that a sub 50:00 10k implies the person is fit enough to run a 1:50 half AND a <4 hr marathon

I will try for both of those next year, but honestly more interested in developing 5k speed. It's probably all kind of the same thing tho at my newb level [more fit = faster at all these things]

Welp, notched another BQ marathon in my belt. Decided on Wednesday (after a DNF/drop to 100k at Javelina this past Saturday) to sign up for the Revel Canyon City marathon, a race my buddy was doing as his 7th attempt at a Boston Qualifyer. Basically a run from almost 6k feet up in the San Gabriel's down Hwy 39 (Azusa Canyon) to the city of Azusa. There were about 3 miles worth of hills scattered in there as well, but mostly it was about running efficiently (staying light, keeping good form) and smart (lots of turns so running tangents was key) so as not to blow up the legs.
I was a moron and forgot my watch, so all I could do was start Strava on my phone and put it in the pocket of my handheld for the duration, so I had no idea what was going on as far as pace. I stuck to the 3:10 pacer for a good bit, but he seemed all over the place, and I pulled ahead for several miles then he blew by me (with nobody left in his group) at mile 20. I was still running strong so I let him go, but he never got more than 30 seconds ahead of me. The course empties out of the canyon and onto the city streets with 5k to go, and I was expecting to feel flat after an extended downhill, but I was able to put the hammer down. Ran the last 3.1 in 21:56 and went from 73rd to 64th....passing the 3:10 pacer with a half mile to go. I feel like this was my strongest finish in a long time. I felt totally in control and never came close to bonking. I used Tailwind in my handheld, refilling with a single serving pouch at the halfway. I went from 142nd to 64th in th second half..which is where all the hills were. Finished 64/1200 overall and 12/100 in my AG. With my new 40-44 AG, I'm now in the BQ -5:00 club, which means in 11 months I'll get to register a few days early for Boston 2017.
3:07:38 official time.
So, overall I'm really happy...especially after running a 100k 7 days before this.

I will say....I can't recommend the Revel race series enough. They put on a top notch event...by far the best marathon experience I've had, next to Boston of course.

Man good job! I went out to try to do 3 miles on Wednesday and felt like I half pulled my hamstring and did 1 mile. Haha, though today I have felt good so might try running again tomorrow.

Maybe the last warm (*) day for biking, went out for 40k. Legs tired, but a threesome group passed me like nothing. I know I'm not fast, but find it off how easily they passed me.

Nice work Chris! Good way to give that DNF the finger lol.

Had a good week of training. 7 mile tempo. 3x1.5 repeats, and a solid 12 mile at half marathon pace. Body feels strong so I'll go at it hard again this week.

Had a great LSR just now. Even though the second half was in the pitch black and I was tripping and backtracking in a few places, I beat my half PR on a GAP basis just now lol. HR suggests I wasn't working very hard (132 avg, about 140-142 in the last 5k where I picked up the pace)

Pretty stoked. Never felt this strong on a LSR before and perhaps my fail late sept in the San Jose half was just a bad day and some nerves (I went 1:57:xx, about 7:xx over predicted capability based on race pace testing)

I was just trying to aim for my LSR/easy pace of like 9:30 or so but was just going on feel really, felt really easy so I sped up a bit. Decided to keep it easy and to push a little on the last 5k after the first couple miles in

I would not do any of those my friend. I'll take my chances with mountain lions over crack heads.

^^Either way, brokeback mountain is not my cup of tea. \:D

Broke in a new set of GT-2000s so took it a little easier last week. But marathon training continues to go well. Knocked out a 16.7 miler Saturday. First 7 were done pacing the running group, the last 9 were done ahead of them. Averaged 8:54/mi. Plan to knock out a couple hard runs this week @ a sub-8 min/mile pace if I can.

Although the plan only calls for 12 miles Saturday, I will probably do a moderate 8-10 Friday and a faster 14 on Saturday. Possibly a short recovery run on Sunday. The back-to-backs seem to be working well.

#hobbyJogger update:

I'm a little over 1/2 way through (On week 8) of Pfitzinger's 18-week/70-mi plan. So far things have been pretty good, some of the mid-week med/long runs can be really annoying (Tues/Thurs runs of 13-15 miles most weeks).

I've had a minor injury of some kind for a couple weeks that decided to turn into a bigger issue this past Friday (something just above the knee, maybe IT band), so I took a few days off, and now I'm doing an awkward recovery/taper process for a half-marathon I've got on Saturday. I figured I'd use this one as a guide for how fast I should run my full marathon come January.

We'll see how it goes, if I can get this injury mostly gone by Sat I'm hoping for worst case low 1:3x, and best case upper/mid 1:2x finish time.

We did it csi! ... or something...

Race started out pretty good, I locked in with the 1:30 pace group right away. Initially there were about 20-25 of us in the 1:30 group, with maybe 25-30 or so ahead of us.
As we kept going, more and more people fell off the group. At the 5-mile mark it was just the 1:30 pacer, me, and another woman that were left. I was still feeling pretty good at that point, at the 6 mile mark the woman slowed for the water station and we never saw her again.

I felt really good, with some random conversation with the pacer. When we passed the 8-mile mark I joked that's where I usually started coming apart and wonder why the f I run these damn things, but wasn't feeling too bad so far this race.

Unfortunately it all caught up to me around the 10 mile marker or so, and I started really feeling it. The pacer was really cool though, and kept shouting encouragement.
Around the 12 mile mark I kinda felt like I was 50:50 making it vs passing out, figured f-it might as well push, and wound up with a new PR.

Fun smaller local race. I'll probably find out in a few days what my official time/position was, my wife thinks I was somewhere around 12th-15th place overall. I'm pretty happy with the result, since I've only been focusing on full marathon paced training, and just coming back from an injury the past couple weeks.

The new PR is around 1:27:xx, from my previous 1:31:02 (dunno what the official time is yet, I started my watch a little late on the course).

(not quite accurate result):

Wrapped up another good week of marathon training. Got in a couple 7 mile runs at a 7:45 pace and a 14 mile run at an 8:15 pace. Trying to keep things fast for as long as I can.

Next up... Thursday's Turkey Trot + 16-18 mile run Saturday.

I posted this week's update in the Thanksgiving Challenge thread. On yesterday's run, I stuck with the running group for the first 9-10 miles before pushing ahead on my own. Next weekend calls for 12 miles. But I will probably do a hard 16 in the hopes of improving on my stamina & speed.

Taken at mile 7:

Aliso Wood Canyon, just South of Laguna Niguel.

I forgot to mention that we met a few ultra-runners along the way. My coach made it sound like at least one of them was fairly well known in the running community. I'll ask him this week what her name was.
