Hopefully this isn't true for all of the 335's.

Oil temps into the 300 degree range, ouch. What were the coolant temps? Can you post a picture of the front of the car? I'd like to see exactly what BMW is/isn't doing to cool the car via frontal air cooling. All of a sudden I may have an example to explain the hole in my hood on the ehvoh.

Edit::

Supposedly a good cylinder head can handle 240 degrees coolant temp before major damage. Oil temps are typically 50 degrees higher than coolant (depending on where the reading is taken from). Apparently BMW shuts the car off right before major damamge. That is a GOOD idea that I wish more OEM's did. However:

1. Shutting off a car cooking at 300 degrees
2. Getting to 300 in the first place.

Owie, maybe too much NVH insulation? Design dictated by NVH? Or just bad cooling system design?

Well, doing some visiting to the Bimmer forums, it seems like there has been several other track days in which 35i's were featured, and they didn't have the same issues.

At the same time, other stories are coming out about similar experiences.

However, one 335i driver revealed that his owner's manual states that 340 degrees is withint he normal operating temperature of the engine's oil. Wow!

340 is much too high. I know they are relying on synthetic oils these days but that is still much too high. BMW is pushing things toof far. They have been having motor problems then they start pulling these stunts. They are also famous for voiding warrantys. A person in pittsburgh was denied warranty work when they scanned his ecu and saw that he did a lot of spirited driving.

FWIW (because its all I really know) many Evo guys are seeing 210 oil temps on hot days when lapping their cars. Coolant gets slightly above normal and rests at about 200 degrees (tstat is 180 on the evo).

That's what I just don't get. If I look in the bumper of my friend's 325is (1987), not only does it have a giant oil cooler there, but it actually has its own dedicated opening in the bumper and is closed in with ducting so that it gets direct cool air.

Now how does a company that took oil cooling that seriously for a meager 160HP engine back in the 80s allow such a thing to happen? I wonder if that 340 temp is the oil pan temps, or after the oil cooler?

I mean, I've seen some road racers complain bitterly that their oil temps hit above 250. Now it's got me wonder what the average oil temps are in a 997 being driven hard. But then again, a Porsche turbo oil cooler is more of a radiator than a cooler B'GASS LOL.

Either way, I hope the issues have been resolved. This is definitely one of the coolest cars BMW has made in a long time.

What the fuck, seriously?

Also, why wouldnt coolant temps rise as well if the oil is getting so hot? And wouldnt exposing the coolant to air cool off the engine? Or is the antifreeze and radiator just for decoration?

This seems like evidence that BMW seriously fucked up. My car is probably not as euro-quiet as the average bmw, but when my temps go above 94C I start to get worried. Above 110C, my ecu cuts redline to 4000 rpm and doesnt let me into boost. This has only happened 2 times- 1) when my water pump belt snapped and 2) when I drove in full boost for about 20 minutes with the AC on. Turning off the AC dropped me immediately back down to 92 C.

And I'm still running a completely stock cooling system with an intercooler in front. BMW fucked up.

This is their first turbo engine in quite some time. Could just be some teething issues that will be quickly and easily resolved.

During the summer months here, Evo/STI/turbo powered cars seem to have to pull off the track after 5-7 laps to cool off unless there have been some cooling mods done.

The evo tranny likes to to overheat. I haven't heard of any cooling system problems in the cars (but I don't chat in the road racing circles).

I would think they're testing would have revealed this issue though, I'm sure the mules saw extensive time at "the ring"

should never have been an issue.

I don't get to do PDI's anymore so I haven't gotten a good look at the E92. However I looked online and found that the oil cooler is tucked ahead of one of the front wheels since the intercooler is taking up space in the center. I can't comment on airflow to the cooler because the pics online suck.....but I will try to look at one at work.

I also checked for any service bulletins related to oil temps and I found nothing.....

And the extensive testing they did in the AZ/CA Desserts should have made it clear too.

Many of the early 335i's were missing factory oil coolers, located in the right wheel well. If you go through BMA customer service directly, they will order and install. Mine was missing, I had an October 06’ Build date.

i'm not sure what the average 997 temps are, but porsche is more aware (and almost encouraging) of their owners trackig the cars so you can guess that they've taken enough measures to keep the oil cool. plus, your car has probably double the oil capasity of most every other car anyway; takes alot more heat to heat alot more oil up

We did some investigating at work, and it seemed like the only 335s that got oil coolers had to be ordered with manual trans and sport package. Surprisingly it's a rare combo because I've only seen a handful with oil coolers.

EDIT: In that article they show an automatic with an oil cooler, so my theory goes out the window.

one of the last tests that motor trend did with a 335 and something else, had to stop testing cause of the 335 was having a meltdown.Seems they all have this problem if you beat on them for a bit the car goes into limp mode and overheats

Can't say this is suprising in the least... I mean it is bmw after all. After pretty much the entire e46 engine was recalled in the first year or so of production I havent really trusted brand new bimmer engines. This car will be really badass in a year or so though \:\)

Since I will be getting a 335i in July I have been following this issue very closely. There was a batch of early US bound automatic equipped 335i's that were built without oil coolers. When run hard the oil temperatures could go to or above 300f. However, all manual transmission equipped cars had the oil coolers. Those cars had no issue.

I was recently at a track day where one of the instructors was driving a 335i stick. He pounded the snot out of his car and never saw oil temps over 240. This guy even had an add-on module that raised boost about 2psi so he was making about 340hp. When asked he told me that he has never had an oil temperature issue.

IMHO I think reports of this problem were greatly exaggerated because of the internet. In all I have counted about 15 cases of owners reporting high oil temperatures. From a purely statistical standpoint 15 out of thousands of cars sold is not a huge issue (although I would be really pissed if I was one of those 15).

And FWIW it was not all e46's with engine issues...it was the first year of the e46 M3.

Yeah, I included 'in the first year' in my post, it worked pretty well once the general public did all their beta testing for them that first year lol. There's some other thread about the high pressure fuel pump going out on these too, maybe you should look into that.

Like I said before, another year or two and these things are going to be awesome \:\)

The E46 M3 bearing issue was a supplier related parts defect, which can happen to any manufacturer anytime. They recalled the motor and extended the engine warranty to 100k miles (from 48k), shit I almost wish that would happen to any car I buy, lol. Extend my warranty x2 for the trouble of beating on one of your rentals for a day or two.

Yeah, free extended warranties are great, but the peace of mind of knowing you're driving a finished product and not a work in progress is even better, IMHO \:\)

Again, BMWs are fucking awesome, but they're even more fucking awesome when the bugs are all worked out of them.

Last I read the 335's were putting down about 280 whp stock, which would equate to roughly 330 at the crank in a manual transmission car.

Yeah, I think there is a reason they seem to be 0.3-0.5 faster than G35's (aside from the torque advantage) and running times similar to an M3.

What do the IS350's put down?
