Soarers weren't available in the U.S..... only the SC300/400.

They aren't common here in the states at all. That'd be an option if they existed here in masses but any here are imported and thus have the imported rhd premium on them. And Canadia is apparently easier but from what i gather it's not worth trying to import any jdm vehicle myself and pay all the fees and parts to make it emissions legal especially when I'm trying to keep this super low budget.

Well that sucks...

There's a shit-ton of Soarers in/around BC. One in good condition (50,000 miles) usually runs about 7K $CDN

Just get an SC300, slap a 1500 dollar turbo kit on it, tune it and call it a day. Even the auto will handle 450whp.

Oooh, I like that $6500 Turbo. It has a lot of stuff done that will save you the trouble and cash. It should be a high 12/low 13 second 106-108 mph car if it's running right. I'm not crazy about the JDM motor swap, but it shouldn't be a problem; most USDM to JDM parts are interchangeable. The new tranny, clutch, and turbo are a huge bonuses. As is the sunroof. I hated my t-tops and it's very hard to find a Turbo w/o t-tops. Hardtop is the dream; sunroof is good; t-tops suck IMO.

Yeah, the t-tops are a pain, and leak.

Why don't you like the Japanese sourced engine?

how about a base model, since it's a project that's going to be worked over extensively and should provide a cheaper starting point!?!?!

Performance is the same, no worries there.

It just means someone would have had to do a clean engine swap. There are plenty of hack swaps out there, and there are lots of clean swaps.

I'd stay far away from most NA to Turbo conversions. Again, it can be done right, but most people slap it together. This car claims to be an original Turbo car, so that makes it 100X simpler.

I'm lazy and cheap. $6500 for a car that likely runs 12's and has new everything (engine, tranny, clutch, turbo, IC, wheels, tires, paint?) is a win in my book. There will still be plenty of weekend wrenching to do on this car.

An NA car with as clean of an interior and exterior will cost $4k. There's no way you get an NA car as fast for an additional $2500.

Just a little patience and save a little more cash. I wish I could go pick on of those up today but in the past 4 months I've bought a brand new truck, a boat, and a camping trailer so my fun-funds are mostly depleted. I'm itching to get something today, but I realize it's best for me to wait save more, and get something better.

Damn that's a nice price. My cousin also has a white sc300. It's a '97 with the revised tail lamps, but it's a 5-spd. Kinda paid out of the ass for it, too. $11k, 70k miles back in '04 or '05.

Funny that you're looking for an mr2. My other cousin (sc300 boy's brother) had a '93 silver w/ black t-tops, chrome supra turbo wheels, and a 3rd gen 3s-gte w/ ct20b turbo for a month. Shit was quick. Ran 12's. Too bad it caught on fire in a best buy parking lot. Sucks. Oh well. Good luck!

No SC300 so now I gotta figure out what to do with my 19" Professors

But really it's nothing I'd expect you guys to get excited about.
91 N/A has rod knock needs paint, but nearly perfect interior, straight body, and clear title. When I saw the interior I was sold. Paid $1200. Probably buying a 3sgte swap once the professors are sold. It's gonna take a while to get it where I want it but that's what I wanted, a project.

Man, I think you made a great choice. Proven platform for modding, with exactly the right parts intact, and the wrong parts broken. And plenty of money leftover for mawds. Sweet.

Fun. Get a GenIII 3S-GTE if you're thinking basic mods, 300+ whp, and mid-12's. If that's not fast enough, you can get a cheaper GenII motor and build the shit out of it. Power is all in the cylinder head in these cars. The OEM short block is pretty damn stout with just the addition of forged pistons. A couple of years ago, you could still buy a brand new 3S-GTE short block from Toyota for very reasonable money.

Well I got an offer on my wheels tonight. If the dude actually comes through (who knows. fucking craigslist) I'll probably be ordering a GENIII swap from EMS Powered in the next week unless someone has a different importer to suggest. I've been reading about mr2 stuff like crazy all day. It's all new to me so there's a lot to take in. I'm gonna go crazy ordering shit. lol.

Well as with any project when something's new you probably shouldn't go crazy ordering shit right off the bat.

What kind of price are you getting on the Gen III swap? My room mate got his (IIRC) from EO Performance. PETC on MR2board if you have any questions. His MR2 makes 270/270: Gen III engine, intake, exhaust, fuel pump.

Uh, some cars have weak connecting rods and stout pistons (VW).

Brakes are the biggest weaksauce problem on the NA cars. Steering ratio is the same I think... it's only different between manual racks and power assisted racks.

Again, just make sure 300ish whp is where you want to be, otherwise your money is better spent on a GenII with a built head. The GenIII block has failed more often than the GenII. I can't recall any GenII block failures. What are you doing for a transmission?

Yeah I noticed after I posted that a tranny isn't listed in there. He wants like 2950 for the swap with jdm LSD tranny. I found some importers through ebay that kill that price. Aside from where to buy I'm still not 100% sure what I want to do. I'm leaning towards buying the swap, doing pistons, rods and 272s. It'll be build kinda like my DSM was with that stuff. But I'm still reading and seeing if it'd be worth doing that stuff and what kind of boost I can push through it or what turbos the sw20 guys like to run. Right now it's just all ideas and research.

If you're going to swap the turbo, drop in cams, and build the engine, you should just buy a GenII. There's no point in paying extra for the GenIII. People buy GenIII's because they come with a bigger turbo, hotter cams, and lower compression pistons. They have a better intake manifold too, but that's easily fixed. They also have better engine management and bigger injectors. Either way, it sounds like you intend to exceed the limits of those too.

What is your hp or acceleration goal for this car?

Well I just bought a Gen2 swap for $1500 shipped. There was another one that *looked* a little cleaner but there was some orange RTV on the tranny so I passed. We'll see how this one looks when I get it I guess. I'm gonna wait a bit to order any parts for it.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...RK%3AMEWNX%3AIT

And to answer your question on my goals, I sat here for 15 minutes trying to convince myself I knew where I was going, but I really don't have HP numbers or anything in my head. I think I'll just build it up and live with the stock kit for a bit. In a while once I get paint/suspension/wheels done I can start to seriously consider turbo kits/fuel/and management.
