You think they'd lose sales because they wouldn't be popular or the fact that most diesels pretty much run forever with a minimum of maintenance?

a bit of both.
people in north america wouldnt buy into it because of whatever media bs behind diesels has been programmed into them .

then the cars would run to long and youd have people not wanting/getting new cars every 3 yrs.

Most articles I've read say they would cost too much. Hybrids already command a premium, as do diesels (due to their complex exhaust treatments) so take todays hybrids and make them more expensive.

I can't see them costing that much more, maybe a few grand?

A hybrid is already a few grand more than a gas powered car so add a couple grand more on top of that and it might not fly.

I recall reading about a project where NYC or some other big city has a fleet of various hybrid drivetrain garbage trucks (like a trial to see which company/configuration is best). I wish Subaru would have brought the diesel outback (non hybrid)with a manual trans, I'd probably be driving one right now.

Neighbor of ours had a oldsmobile diesel. 1984.

Trust me media bs had nothing to do with american hatred for diesels.

Diesel hybrids are in testing. BMW announced they were working on a diesel hybrid before summer. Hyundai is working on a diesel hybrid. They have a running prototype in one of their showcars. They are coming down the pipeline, it's just taking a while.

One thing I keep thinking is that diesels might not deal that well with frequent starting and shutting off due to the glow plug thing? Or am way off here?

GM did that on a bunch of their engines, none of them worked. At all.

The issues with cost arise in the fuel injection systems of modern diesel technology, pretty much everyone is buying commonrail computers and injectors from Bosch. Bosch is trying to recoup their investment (like they've been doing on pretty much every EFI system) but these suckers are suuuper pricy. The fuel pumps on many manufacturers vehicles (BMW, VW, etc) have been having issues. That and the diesel particulate filter and sometimes urea exhaust fluid injection systems, variable vane turbochargers (gasser hybrids don't have turbozzz- tack on some more bucks for that shit).. just a few things that make them a little more expensive to produce than a gasoline engine.

Only an issue on some vehicles with cold starts. The original version of the 6B (Cummins Dodge Truck engine) didn't even have glowplugs and Cummins has stayed with an intake heater since 1989... Any close to modern diesel will have temp sensors and a computer controlled adaptive glow plug system, and on any engine thats close to warm they fire right up with zero glow plug heat time.

Real diesels don't need glow plugs.

An engine that needs a glow plug is of a poor design. The three protos at work don't even use glow plugs. All have an intake heater for cold starts.

I wouldn't say more complicated, but it's more expensive from what I've read in typical car mags. Seems to be linked mostly to emissions and exhaust treatments required to be on par with gas engines. Keep in mind, on top of fuel economy standards, there are emissions standards that aren't that easy to meet with diesel. Now that the price of diesel is typically about the same as gas, obviously manufacturers don't think a hybrid will fly.

I think the hybrid cost argument isn't quite as powerful anymore. =

I don't know if it was ever that powerful. IIRC, most hybrids need 5+ years to return the investment and I think most people buy them for the immediate fuel economy impact.

Nah, all depends on temp.. Even in the winter once the car is warmed up as long as the coolant temp doesn't get below a certain point the glowplugs won't even click on...

The constant on/off with a diesel wouldn't be good at all.. Personally, at least in the city I'd like to option to turn the diesel off completely unless it was needed as a last resort...

Chuck, the light always comes on even if they aren't heated up \:\) Same thing with my oldmans Duramax.

My mom loved diesels. She had a late 70s diesel sedan, and an '84 300D wagon (non turbo). Both of 'em had a little light in the dash that glowed when the glowplugs were warmed up. They were both pretty cool cars in their own right. She had one of those 80s Oldsmobile diesel stationwagons. Almost made her swear off diesels forever. Certainly made her swear off domestics. That was an unbelievably bad car.

I hate diesels and I hate hybrids, so they're probably a match made in heaven.

Yep. The cummins all have "Wait to Start" lamps and no glowplugs, just the grid heater. my oldman's 09 TDI Jetta seems to vary between about half a second to five seconds IIRC

LOL! You're a valuable addition to the team dude. I love the "why can't we have diesel dishwashers?" threads, where 10 people are like "wtf are you talking about", and then you come in all like "actually diesel powered dishwashers make perfect sense, and here's why..." It's like clockwork, and it always makes me smile \:\)
