Why didn't Ford drop a diesel into the Fiesta? I know I'm a huge diesel nutswinger, but jesus christ it doesn't take a rocket science to figure things like this out.

Yeah, on a miata or mr2 or something I generally don't put much stock in roominess/cargo capacity, but that + fuel mileage are the only reasons you buy these things (only reason we bought ours). I think the Fiesta is awesome though, and I'm really glad Ford is rocking so much ass lately. I just wish GM and Chrysler would join them asap

I stopped by the Ford dealer a few days ago and checked out the half dozen Fiestas they had in the back lot, didn't feel like being bothered, i'm not in the market.
I was a little disappointed that none of them were optioned for less the 20k, and none were manuals. Dash sure looks nice though! Think we'll hold onto the Mazda3 for a while longer. . .

+ a lot.
Rented one when the g unit and I were in Vegas last summer. Hatchback space is comical. Only had 2 carry-on luggage, and I had to fold one of the rear seats down to accommodate one of the luggage so one it didn't block the rear window.

Customers want the car now, so their thought process takes over and they go "I guess I can live with the extra options. It's ONLY $6K more"
wow, b/c at 20 were in Mazda 3 territory, and for ONLY 4 more, were in the Jetta Tdi's neighborhood. Guess I'm glad we don't NEED a car now, just checking them out.
They did seem to have a LOT of lime green ones too, really?

At 20k you're in a well optioned 3 territory. Mine was a hair under 17k, and still has a/c, power windows, aux audio input (only options I really cared about, aside from the alloy wheels which I added on my own lol miata).
The option thing with the Fiesta is tricky... theoretically you *can* get it more stripped and slightly cheaper than a base Fit, but that's going to be madd hard. Mod-for-mod they're about the same price, but you can actually find base Fits all over the fucking place (our dealer usually stocks 4-5 of each, base and 'sport'). You can also get the Fiesta with more mods than are offered on the Fit, which can be a bonus if you really want a 20k Fiesta, but the downside of that is that dealers are going to stock the hell up on those to keep profit margins high.
Still, if you care far more about options than you do hp, you could do worse than a 20k fully-optioned Fiesta.

The only reason I wonder about this is that MT has been slobbing all over Ford's knob for the past year or so. Countless "omg, domestic manufacturers are doing so well!" editorials (which they are, but still, the fact is NOT slipping past anyone there lol), car of the year award for the Fusion, full features of "Omg look at the new hotness coming out of detroit", etc. I think Ford and GM are rocking, so they deserve praise, but I also get a slightly nagging feeling that the car mags are somewhat in 'cheerleader' mode for the conversion. This doesn't bother me, because it's in their best interest if the car industry stays as diverse as possible. It does make me worry less about anti-domestic bias from any front (even from advertising) though.

The fiesta will probably end up like ford's other "euro" cars and have the wiring fall apart or something.
Not that i'm bitter.
Well it's being built in Mexico along with a car that keeps getting top ratings for quality in the Fusion. Ford has come a LONG way on quality at pretty much all of their plants. I understand some hesitance though, I had an SVT Focus (also built in Mexico when that plant was first started) pretty much fall apart on me within a year of the warranty being up.
As far as the Fiesta, I am not surprised most of them on dealer lots right now are highly optioned. They are just now starting to reach dealers in numbers, and in my experience dealers generally highly-option the first run of a new car model. I think a better mix will start to filter in over time if the demand is there.
I am a little concerned about the cost of the Fiesta though. I think after the newness rubs off, Ford is going to find it tough going with the higher trim levels reaching towards $20k. You can buy a lot of car for that sort of money these days. I would love to see an SVT/ST Fiesta with the 1.6 ecoboost, but would they actually sell if they break the $20k mark? That is starting to run into some highly competitive territory with cars a size-class up, not to mention competition from other niche small cars like the Mini and (hopefully at some point) the Fiat 500.
