Well, it's Day #2....I missed my spin class because I messed up my l5 and s1 and had to go to the chiropractor
Okay, so, I decided to really cut things down over the next 3-4 weeks and see how my body responds. I have never really done a low carb (low starchy carb), high protein diet before.
I have to say, so far, it's been amazing. I really can't believe the difference in only two days. I have energy, never hungry and my body isn't bloated and puffy feeling.
I am eating every 2-3 hours (ish) and started protein before and after my workouts (wasn't hungry at all after weight on Tuesday, and I am usually STARVING!)
Anyone else have some nutrition stories, suggestions along the lines of low carb, high protein?

Low carb really works for me. I think you'll see some good results if you do it right.

I've been following that protein drink diet that Drew posted in that hundredpushups thread, albeit a bit more loosely. It's actually going pretty well, although I only have four shakes per day and eat a regular dinner at night (something that's fairly healthy with no starches, just meat and veggies). I've been feeling pretty good in the gym, so I figure I'll probably just do this until I run out of my whey protein.

I respond SOOOOO much better to high protein/high fat no carb diets when it comes to losing weight and still feeling good. I feel so much more satiated on this kind of diet and dont feel like I'm depriving myself at all. You have to keep fiber high via leafy greens and you can supplement with stuff like flax seeds sprinkled on your food.
What I usually do is less than 40g carbs per day (fiber does not count against carb total) during week then bump it up to 300g or so on Saturday and Sunday. You can play with the 'carb-up' days or you can not have them at all it's really a personal thing. Keep your good fats high like lots of mono and poly unsaturated fats from olive oil, almonds, avocado etc.

I don't know $hit about diabetes but I remembered it being a big topic in the book I read called 'The Metabolic Diet" Dr. Mario Dipisqaule. I used this book my first time on a no carb diet.
I lifted this from that book which is just a small section out of the part where he talks specifically about diabetes:
------------------- Often weight loss and a proper diet is all that's needed to keep it under control. The Metabolic Diet, since it both decreases body weight and increases insulin sensitivity, is an excellent diet and lifestyle management plan for type 2 diabetics, and it's also useful for the smaller number of insulin-dependent or type 1 diabetics. The effect of the Metabolic Diet on insulin requirements in type 1 diabetics and on the use of medications in type 2 diabetes, while variable, usually results in less medication being needed. In fact, insulin sensitivity increases if the Metabolic Diet is used along with exercise and some targeted nutritional supplements. Although many diabetics find that their insulin or medication requirements may be lower, it may not be depending on the type of diet that was followed before embarking on the Metabolic Diet. If a diabetic followed the usual dietary guidelines (a diet that is high in carbohydrates, low in fat, and low in cholesterol 80) recommended for diabetics, then medication needs or insulin levels may go down during the low-carb phase of the diet. If the diabetic disregarded the dietary guidelines and ate a diet higher in protein and fat and lower in carbohydrates, then the medication needed may not change appreciably. --------------

Awesome, good for you.
One thing I did notice the first time I did a no carb diet was around the 7th day or so I crashed hard but it was only for like a day and then I was fine.

Thanks for the heads up!
Today I went out for breakfast, so my eating was a tad off, but still good (poached eggs...and yeah, a few little sausages ).
I am really sad about my lower back, so I have to learn to accept my limitations at this point. Frustrating.
Oh, and my weight, strangely enough, down by 6 pounds this morning. Water weight? Guess I will see next week.

as long as you arent doing any intensive cardio/sports that require the carbs. you should be good Intense sports don't require carbs, unless you're talking about needing to refuel during the event, in which case carbs are preferable. Any kind of food will provide enough calories for quite a while if eaten beforehand.
I am having a protein shake with some dextrose in it about an hour before my workouts (around 200 calories), then another with maltodextrin and l-glutamine after (around 250 calories). Yes, I understand that this almost 1/2 of my daily caloric intake, but I can't be eating chicken and fish all day long.

You're missing my point. There is nothing that will prevent one from performing intense sports if they don't eat carbs. The glycogen is going to be replenished before the event anyway, whether it's carbs or fat. Now, carboloading may allow you to go a little bit further initially, but as long as your glycogen stores aren't depleted, you'll be able to perform. People have run marathons low-carb before. Lots of people do. I know what you're saying, and I somewhat agree, but there is nothing about human physiology that absolutely requires carbohydrates. There are systems that allow for energy to be obtained from whatever form of food we eat.

No need for the dextrose pre-workout or the maltodextrin in the other. Use those calories for some delicious food.
When my schedule changes, I will be able to have a piece of fruit with my shake before workout and something after. At this point though, it's a matter of convenience - I can't eat food when I am with the kids before I work out. It's hard enough getting the shake in.

In on this starting tomorrow for a month. Going to shoot for around 1200 calories, but I honestly don't know if I can handle that. Worth a try anyway.

I did that for a while in the same calorie range and I saw some improvement. I am at the point where I need to get really strict with my diet to shed the rest of the fat that I want.
Having my last beer for a month right now :'( Coors Light, lol.

No reason beat yourself up about it. Just don't make it a habit.
Day 2 for me, and so far so good, haha. Black coffee for breakfast, workout, scoop of protein in water and some black bean soup with a tsp. of olive oil and chili paste mixed in so far today. I had plenty of energy for my workout, which was week 4, day 1 of the onehundredpushups.com program with some chinups thrown in for good measure.
I am feeling a little hungry but it's nothing a little willpower can't overcome.

So the only really "carb heavy" meal that I am eating is a ~200-300 calorie serving of brown rice and pinto beans with veggies. Is it ok to eat that for my first food of the day at lunchtime? I have never tried carb timing/cycling before.

I am trying out fasted workouts for fat loss. I am used to eating whole grain cereal or steel cut oats with fruit for breakfast, and then I work out. I want to maximize using stored fat as energy for now.
