I had to move due to family circumstances and as much as it sucks family comes first...so now i live in da ghetto and I have no garage.

I plan on building a 20' x 20' contraption of some sort for under $200. I want to put two cars in there. I plan to build it from 6 4x4's as my posts and a bunch of 2x4's and two 40x40 tarps. Anyway Home depot's longest 2x4 is 16' so that's a problem as I want the entrance to be a huge opening with no post in the middle. Any suggestions/advice before i embark on this project?

BTW, anyone have hook ups on gravel?

Here is how i want it to look, the skeleton anyway.

It doesn't need to support much. I was initially going to go all out and use chipwood 8x4's and then shingle it, but considering I need this pos for about a year this should do

is it on a big parking lot or is it on a residential home drive way?

but anyway either way, you'd have to make sure the roof is strong enough to be able to withstand the weight from the snow if you plan on staying there for a year. Unless it's just till end of Oct, then dont worry about it.

Doesnt canadian tire have some sort of a fold-out garage tent to store cars???

I have the canadian tire fold out garage, i use it to store my other civic hatch. That thing is $500 (I paid $100) and it's only for one car.

This is going to be in a backyard, the property has a driveway that goes to the back and yard is pretty big. I can start a junk yard back there, being scarborough i am sure it wouldn't be a big deal.

Kijiji it, Im SURE you can find a tent for cheap.

Think about it, you're usually working on the weekends, do you think you could have the time to build it? you're better off buying another tent.

Other than putting a few more horizontal supports at the top to prevent it from spreading/sagging it looks fine. As you put the tarp on it glue and screw it down to prevent it from being able to move, that's what'll cause your tears. For what you want, it looks alright. Use carriage bolts, and maybe glue, to laminate the 2x4's for a ~3' section to be able to extend 20'.

Ghetto-style (but more costly) would be shoving your posts into the holes of cinder blocks? (Maybe 2-3 cinder blocks 1 on top of each other, spackled together) \:\)

i don't know anything about building stuff outside of the house - but don't you need permits for this? i think even for decks - you need a permit, right?

personally, i don't give a shit about those permits and consider those a cash grab, but i'm sure there'll be some neighbourhood nazi that will go after you for stupid shit like this and make you pay or tear your shit down.

just sayin' ...

hyper is right, 10x10 (or 100 square feet) is the largest you can build without a permit.
Someone is going to complain, and then you'll have a pile of 2x4s, becuase you'll have to tear it down.
i built a 10x11 shed/garage for my bikes and with buying nails, 2x3s, 2x4s, 2x6s, shingles, plywood, lights, plugs and wire, it cost about $900.

I can tell you from experinece you cannot build that for $200 and expect it to stand.
I wanted to spend $500 and even then it wasn't possible.

I have redesigned the concept a little bit, still same idea though. I am going to HD to price it all out. I am willing to spend up to $300, but if i can get it at $200 I will be happy. Over $300 and there will be no project.

You might be able to go with less wood, if you made it like a 'triangle'? i.e. 6ft entrance, sloping down to say, 3ft ... kinda like a shack. Getto-fab y0.

Hell, just hang a huge tarp with rope tied to trees on all 4 corners
