We have all seen the stereotypical blinging Escalade with 22" spinners. My question is, what is the reverse of that? I mean, are there cars that are quick, dash-molester friendly, etc without being ostentatious? I think that pro-touring 2JZ Camaro comes close to what I am thinking, as does an M3.

The center console in my buddy's S60R has the paint/coating chipping off of it pretty badly. Very weird because the rest of the interior is very nice.

And Duder, you're missing the point. Everybody wants bad-ass rides and most of us would like others to appreciate them but the difference is between a car that gives car guys hard-ons and cars that look exciting to Joe Dumbfuck (John Q.'s brother).
cheers, scott
cheers, scott
This is more what I was getting at.
i want a car that is universally appealing... i believe it can be done even when you're a grassroots homebrew hack like myself
that's why i've never understood the point of owning a car that like .1% of the population would appreciate (ex. galant vr4) there's just no validation there
Is there a car that is universally appealing? Corvettes, Porsches, Accords, Camrys, everything has its detractors. And I don't see why my (imaginary?) concept of reverse bling can't be appealing to many. It's just that it appeals to different people for different things.

The Galant VR-4, while cool, is still too mainstream for my tastes. Or more correctly, the Galant is too mainstream in general, too early 90's Japanese Borg. I've got this bizarre need to go unrecognized by the unwashed masses. I'd rock an early 70's Colt Galant/Dodge Colt though.
I'd throw it all away for a Cayman S though.
cheers, scott

reverse bling = sleeper, no?
doesn't the new GTO fall into that category? simple.. but powerful.
T-type? the hyundai genesis? type-x R? syclone? Volvo 242Turbo? maybe I'm missing it? every company has a fast car... but in come cases, they have a car that just "blows away the competition."
saab had done it with the viggen, Audi has the r6, Volvo had the V70R, BMW had the Early M3 and the 135/335. GM had the GN/t-type, honda had the type-R
unless I'm missing something, completely?

LOL. I think the Cayman S falls under the bling category, at least according to the unwashed masses and John Q. Dumbfuck.
Yep.

good points all around, i'm liking that we actually have a discussion going as opposed to the typical poo flinging that goes on here
scott, i know that beneath that "i don't want props from anyone" exterior there is an attention starved child lol psychology... the very fact that you own the alfa signifies that because as much as you want it to, that car will never fly under the radar. sure, people don't know what it is right off the bat, but you pull up to a light in a shiny gtv6 and everyone will be looking. to an extent that's what i like about the datsun, the rarity and the perceived coolness. it gets reactions despite being a 68 hp, 30 year old tin can. with the 240 i wanna do something a little different... because it's so mainstream, there's the need to branch out and do something unexpected, hence the ls2. i don't want a car that puts people off, i want a car that draws people in and i think the v8 accomplishes that because americans looooooove their sumbitch small block chevys. and yeah with the cage/wheels/lowered/etc i think even the 240 will be something that people will be curious about, even if they don't really "get" it
so in short, fuck anti bling, i like my bling and want other people to like it too

You don't get my tastes without childhood trauma, lol still bitter.
But just going by my car guy friends opnions, the Alfetta is "uglier" than my pos '85 GTI. They say it looks like the retarded bastard of a Scirocco and an '80's Cavalier hatchback and I should just give up now and do the sensible thing and buy an E28 or E30 Bimmer. The hate keeps me going.
cheers, scott

Nothing wrong with seeking attention, gives me more shit to laugh at. I don't like the bling myself, but it's a matter of taste. Just the sort of shit for people to get all smug and insecure about.
To the OP, I think "reverse bling" is like divide-by-0. Does not compute. If bling seeks to attract attention, the opposite would be things that attempt to camouflage or divert attention. Which is basically the definition of a Q-car. Which is a term that's been around a damn sight longer than "bling".
I like the idea of Q-cars, but my garage proves how much of an attention whore I really am.
