well it is to me, kudos! I recently ran a 22:01 5k and that's all I got. I am also slow though. For a 1-mile I can do a 6:3x but I'm sure I'd fade if that were 2 [also known as I am slow]. For really slow comparisons I'm still over 50:00 in a 10k heh and most likely will stay there a good while

7:00 miles to me are absolutely not comfortable. Unless you're talking about just going out for a 1 mile jog (?) I have no idea. I'm talking about a pace to hold for a 5,10,or 15k jog or whatever. That's ironmom stuff

but who cares right? this is a personal journey. unless I am stalking u on strava

As someone who gets impressed with himself on the rare occasion when the pace goes to low 8's, it's impressive to me.

I was surprised at my bump in pace post-MS150, though. The increase in stamina seems to have sped me up a bit.

It's all relative out there. Always someone faster. And hopefully someone slower.

I think most of us are simply in competition with ourselves anyway. I think with enough time and focus anything is achievable.

I"m a bit like Stickaz. I can run a sub-50 10k, but a 6 min mile over more than one mile is moving to me.

I run purely for cardio and calorie burning though. Overall fitness is my goal, which is why I do a lot of high intensity work and weights as well.

I think you guys are underestimating the effects of distance. Moof said 1-2 miles right?

43:00 10k (7mins) getting pretty fast
14 mine 2 mile(7mins), above average, but far from noteworthy. Not unreasonable to feel fresh after that.

I was going to run last night, but I hurt my back playing floor hockey again. I think it's all the stopping and turning, but floor hockey hurts my back every damn time. Pinched nerve, perhaps?

The only other time it happens is if I run an incline or anything over 4 miles straight

Decided to start my night running training for Leadville. I have an awesome headlamp made by Petzl, but had only used it for 30 minutes at the start of my 50 miler a few months ago. Hit the trail a little before 8 and was able to catch a killer sunset. Did at least half of my 12 miles in total darkness and holy shit...it was epic. Something really exhilarating about cruising down trails in the pitch black with nothing but a beam of light showing you the way.

Yeah night timing trail running makes me stoked.
That said I can't imagine the stoke lasting all night. 3am is a lonely tiring hour no matter what you're doing

Seems like the perfect time to ask this. What are people using for a head lamp? Doing a local trail run series that is at night and need something.

Anybody use anything that helps when running in the heat? I really want to run more this summer but it is like 90 degrees at 8pm at night and I just can't get through 5 miles or so without dying. I have a water bottle vest on order for longer runs but that is about it.

Try an early morning run if you can, after things have cooled the night before.


The tri training has forced me to limit my mileage the last few months. I only average about 10 miles/week. But the IT band issue has completely subsided. Next race isn't until November; might sign up for Long Beach or R&R LA to keep things motivating.

I have the Petzl Tikka RXP. It's amazing. Super comfortable, easy to adjust, and crazy brightness that can be adjusted and programmed for different output. It's also got reactive lighting where it's full power looking down the trail, but dims when looking at something close, like a mat.


As for hydration. I use handheld bottles most of the time, but also have a Simple Bottle (google it) that I tuck into my waist for shorter runs. I also have a Ultimate Direction AK pack I use when I need to carry more stuff (like my phone, fuel, etc.

Early morning still sucks. Tomorrow at 6am it is 80 with 97% humidity. I am also not good at getting up and doing anything that early.

Thanks. I think that lamp may be a little overkill for me but it is a one time purchase so I might just get it anyway. I will try that simple bottle out it might be perfect for what I want.

Sounds like you're already doing most of the common sense stuff. There is some adaptation your body goes through for operating in the heat. It's supposed to take around 2 weeks for total acclimation.

Some of my runner friends swear by doing an easy 5k around the hottest part of the day for 2 weeks. They say their pace at the arbitrary effort level goes up slowly over the two week period. I haven't tried it yet, but might give it a shot this year.

On that note, I moved my runs up to 1.5 miles now. 11:06.

I will just keep trying to get 4-5 runs in a week and be more consistent. I have never been consistent with running. I have been trying to hit the local trail here as it is shaded and with all the turns the gps distance is not accurate so I just use that as a mental excuse for the slow times.

Another weekend, another Mt. baldy summit. I felt bad about sleeping in yesterday, so I knew I had to get up early today and hit it. Took the slightly shorter (but steeper) route up to the top, then the long 7 mile descent back to the car.

Topped off the week at 75.6 miles and 307 miles for the month so far. Biggest month ever, so I'm pretty stoked on that.

it's not the miles (I believe) in his case, much like biking it's all about the vert...

edit oh and for the lulz: I just jogged a slow 10k @ 11:48 mile pace lofl
my goal was to stay in 'zone 2' aka pure aerobic/slow + this was sort of a recovery day for me from my race yesterday.

it was glorious going that slow

hopefully this actually helps my aerobic side. I have no idea what I am doing.

Thanks man. It's weird how the body and mind adapts to the demands we put on it. This kind of mileage is new territory for me, but it's been a progressive build...which is why I've been able to stay healthy and injury free (knock on wood). It really does help that I just love to run. I can't think of more than one or two days in the last few years where I didn't look forward to a run.

Having this huge test looming over my head is a big motivator to get out there and bust my ass. I figure if I suffer in training, then I won't be surprised when it starts hurting bad in the race. Failure is not an option. I've met every goal I've set in the 4 years I've been training and racing...not about to change that now...especially when I'm flying a thousand miles away from my family to do it. If I don't finish it'll be because they drag me off the course. \:D

It actually is mostly about the miles, or rather time on my feet, that's Im most concerned with. Leadville only has a few big climbs, and it's mostly the downhills that have the potential to do the most damage, which is why I've been doing lots of long descents. Getting up to Mt. Baldy once a week is mostly so my body gets used to being up that high. Otherwise my total very is fairly tame now that the kids are out of school since I can only get on the trails once or twice a week.

I always hate posting after mr mom. I may be slowly getting acclimated to the heat. Got in 6 miles in just over an hour on the trail I have been running. My longest to date on that trail and I felt decent for the first 5 miles or so. 10k is next weekend and if I can avoid breaking my ankle on a stump I am hoping for under an hour.

My first bib--for Thursday's 10k



Apparently around 6500 runners between the 5k and the 10k, so I'm likely gonna carry my own water, as the aid stations will likely be a clusterfuck. Did 4 thi afternoon. Should be an interesting experience--even at my "jogger" pace.

Half year update. I've ran 524.60 miles total this year. (298.33 first quarter and 226.27 second quarter) I'm happy with this as I wanted to scale back and run 200 a quarter for a total of 800 this year. Trying to get out as much as I can, but running right now in Florida is brutal. Even running at 8am it is 85 out and feels like 90. Last night was nice I did 5 miles and got rained on for the first 2 miles, which was fun because it cooled things off and made the last 3 miles nice. Past 3 days have been runs of 6 miles (bridge/hill repeats), 7 miles and 5 miles. Tonight is a beach run, probably do 4 miles.

Got no races coming up right now, all the races here are in Winter when it is actually decent out.

I also got a bike and have been biking to work, so this past month alone I biked ~330 miles. Though they're almost entirely easy miles and not hard miles.

Whopping 230 (238 I think) for the year. The good news is I'm healthy, and quick by my standard.

I'll take it. Shooting for 520 for year. Which based on my recent mileage so be no sweat. I was shooting for 700, but based on my foot taking me out for a few weeks here and there that's just not realistic for my first year "consistently" running.

I'm at 1,355 miles so far. 315 for last month alone (my biggest month by like 40 miles I think). The crazy thing is that I'm not noticeably fatigued at all. The body feels ready for battle. \:D


We leave on Friday for a week of mountain biking and running some beautiful Sierra backcountry trails and drinking beer in the river.

June totals:

bike: 250 miles-ish
run: 60 miles-ish
swim: 10-11 hrs in the water

making a little progress here and there. I'm afraid I may have regressed a little on swimming but at practice last night I was still making my intervals and even made a 400y interval sub 5:00, so it's all probably in my head

My very first half-marathon was supposed to have water stations every 2 miles, in actuality it was more like every 3.5-4 miles. When I got to the first one, they were giving out those super tiny paper cups that hold maybe 1/3 cup of water. I figured fine I'll deal, when I took a sip it was 90% crushed ice. Since then I always bring a minimum amount of my own water just incase.

I think I've nursed the IT band long enough. Decided to go back out for a slightly faster run tonight which felt good. 6 miles and no issues (yet). Going to do strength tomorrow and then resume 8 min miles late this week.

Need to make room for BBQ!
