Cross-threaded from teh OT due to encouragement by cua0:

I know this post isn't really OT-specific but the West forum is dead (won't get a response back for another 5-6 months or so) and Ontario is full of people who will be too pro-Toronto. I've also noticed there are enough Albertans who frequent OT.

Anyways on to my question ...

Being a Torontonian from the dirty province of Onterrible , I'm constantly told that despite the fact that there are far superior job opportunities which garner much higher salaries in the Calgary area , it is best to stay put in the Greater Toronto Area because the cost of living far outweighs the benefits of higher wages in Alberta. I'm beginning to wonder if there's much validity in this type of statement.

I may , in the future ... if all the stars align themselves , move out to Calgary. ~98% employment rating is pretty appealing , after all.

Discuss.

Edit: if anyone has any material on this specific topic ... please post up. I can't seem to find too much on teh Google. Merci.

Too me not so much. I find that the wages have come up along with the housing market. I currently reside in manitoba but the labour shortage has driven the wages of reliable employees up. 1 year ago living in calgary i had a 1 bedroom apt with all utilites in paying 1000$ a month, i was making 17$ an hour picking orders in a warehouse. If i would have found a company that would have gotten me my fork lift cert i could have been at the walmart distribution center driving a fork lift for aroud 22$/hr. I had no car payments and found that i lived comfortable gettin drunk every weekend and stoned every night. People need to know how to live within their means.

aside from housing costs, entry fees to nightclubs, and a few little things, it's really not much different than anywhere else.
generally wages equal the increased cost of living anyways, so rather than making $6/hr and paying $600/mo for rent you make $15/hr and pay $1200/mo for rent.

I'd say the real thing that's driving up rent is the conversion of single-apartments, and the replacement of single-family homes with infills. Ahhhh the lucrative housing industry.

If you like the cultural and social aspects of Toronto, it would probably be worth it to stay. Calgary is culturally bankrupt.

Only if you like going to the bar and having 14 year olds hitting on you. Then yes, your statement is true.

That area is pretty good. Willow park which very close has a private golf course. The apartment complex's can have some shady characters in them but you'll find that every where. Other then that location is great, alot of c-train stops close by and anything you need within a 10 min drive or 15 min walk. Id definitly live in the area.

i've only been here less than a week but i'm gonna have to vouch for this.
people here just seem to be more laid back and in general , much nicer. everyone will give you the time of day no matter what and are really hospitable. in the toronto area everyone seems to be out for themselves and nobody gives a shit about anyone else from my experience living there my entire life.
oh and a $12.5 billion surplus ain't too shabby either. ;\)
