https://www.facebook.com/CBCToronto/videos/846755555429000/ The guy seems like a reasonable fellow. I like how he checked the door handle after he went for his handle ride. Did the driver finally unlock the door? still nope |

Holy fuck. I drove down uber fucking early to skip this craze -- even had to pay extra cuz I drove in BEFORE Early Bird FML I hope they don't fuck up the streets TOO late tonight... My parking is close to City Hall |

Free handle rides! |

We finally have Uber in Niagara. I would take that any day of the week over a taxi here. One of the points against Uber was that they don't have to go through a safety inspection on the car like taxis do...I'm sorry but the taxis here are among some of the scariest cars on the road. I would never take a taxi here. We have to deal with them at work and the drivers are all assholes. We have so many complaints when we have to send someone in a cab. When we call for a cab we're told they'll be there when they get there, at least with Uber you can track in real time. |

I've only recently been introduced to Uber ... the S/O uses it for the free $20 rides... - I had 1 driver ask me to sit in front, while the SO sit in the back, so we wouldn't look like passengers. - Another driver had the phone holder between his legs, directly under the steering wheel The SO was also crazy enough to say "If I wasn't already booked for a party, both of us should totally just be Uber drivers just for Dec31/1 ... That surge pricing we'll totally make bank..." |

I like Uber from the fact that there is no cash money exchange. You know what you are paying. |

Taxis just piss me off here. I live in Saskatoon now, and it's a tiny place. Often when I get into the car and ask for my address: "where?" The neighbourhood (of 13,000 people): "where?" The nearby intersection of the largest highway and the largest mall: "where?" Fuck it, I'll just give you directions. I'm tempted to take Uber when it arrives here to see if they know where anything is. |

And yet... everybody's wrong! The real culprit here is the ridiculously expensive taxi licences. Because there's a limited amount of them, they're controlled by a few and thus, there's a de-facto monopoly in place. The Taxi drivers are the victims and they're taking out their anger on UberX drivers but the reality is that it's the licencing scheme in this city that's broken. Uber just showed everyone that the current model is broken. The Taxi industry as it is today is a dying business model. If the Cabbies really want to survive, they should focus their anger on the real culprits. The big 3 companies controlling all the taxi licences in Toronto. They scream "it's just not fair!". That's true, but the one's not being fair here are the licencing monopolies! Taking on Uber drivers, like the idiot in the video, just won't work! Protests that piss off the entire city, just won't work! The only way this will end is if the Taxi model as it stands today just dies. Without the ridiculous fees cabbies pay, they'll be able to compete with Uber on a level playing field. PS: After yesterday's fiasco, I'm more determined to never use a cab ever again! |
Why should the cabbies focus their anger on the big 3 companies? They saw an opportunity, they're milking it. They are technically within the laws outlined within those licenses... Chasing and blaming the wrong people... They might be scum, but they're "legit" ... it's the laws that need to change, and this market force we call Uber is challenging and spotlighting it. Mind you, Uber itself is also challenging other aspects of the model, i.e. the insurance aspect of being an Uber driver, etc. |
yea, licensing cost is pretty high, and so are the insurance costs for the owner/op because its for 'business' purposes... where uber gets around that. |
I think the cabbies are too greedy. that's why they scam ppl on rides etc. if you think they have a lot of rules and regulations here they should see what kind of stipulations are put on new york cab drivers. their licencing and insurance is even harder to get and 10x easier to loose. |

Ive been using uber a lot lately, its almost half the price of what a cab costs in London, and since I live in the country, its over $50 to get home in a taxi, uber is like $30 or less. My wife and I have been sharing rides back and forth for the discount, and they've all been great. Ive actually been going out more now because of uber, paying over $50 to get me home makes me something something. |

And since you have them in the bus for a long time, you pretty much have them locked in for a few hours. lots of profits! |

Taxi business model is a dying industry. The drivers are just too stupid to figure it out. The only way to fix it is not to regulate Uber but to regulate the taxi licences properly. Specifically: stop the price gouging on the licences! Better yet: Get rid of licences altogether! Just get some regulations to make sure everyone is on the same playing field but remove the ridiculous overpriced controlled by a Monopoly licence scheme. |
Getting rid of the license just means lower city revenue... I don't think it's rocket science, make uber drivers pay the same license fee and insurance and move on... |

I said taxi !!! 1 - Business model Taxi = Buy expensive licence, work for local company which makes most of the profits and the driver pays most of the cost. 2 - Business model Driver = Be independant and use an App to get customers and get paid. You pay a fee and provide your own car but you don't need a $250,000 Taxi licence. Get it now? |

Won't solve anything! What Uber/Rebu is doing is disrupting a type of business that's been going on for 100 years which has an big flaw. The secret behind their success is to simply do it differently. If you really want to put everyone on a level playing field, you just need to get rid of the stupid Taxi licensing system. Let a free market economy determie who wins and loses. Offer and Demand will self balance the "driving someone around" market. Let the customers choose who they want. Healthy competition! Heck, it's already working! Most people in this very thread prefer Uber over Taxis. |

What's your problem? You do understand that this whole thing comes down to the competing business models. The sharing economy vs. a monopoly. I really thought you were smarter than this. You disappoint me. |
If you think uber is part of a "sharing" economy you are deluded. The only thing uber does is create/take over and subsequently manipulate a marketplace. Like most other so-called "shareconomy" companies, its business model is simply to create the box within which buyers and sellers interact. There is no sharing taking place... the box is just different (probably better) than the city's box. |
Actually, you're right. It's not really "sharing economy" as we understand it. But it is a whole different business model than the entrenched Taxi business that's for sure. |

http://www.thespec.com/living-story/6306121-when-the-cost-of-saving-money-is-too-high/ I don't always agree with her, but she makes some good points: Quote: the sharing economy is about those of us who aren't The Man battling it out to be among the worst paid, least protected and most exploited workers in the country. We're essentially volunteering to work under conditions that people before us fought long and hard to eradicate. Quote: It's like some corporate evil has hijacked the meaning of community and found a way to profit Quote: It's like the whole world has become a temp agency and we wonder why nobody has a stable income, benefits or a future. And yes, I do participate in some of these systems. |
