I've been having a clunking noise come from my front suspension when i turn the wheel. So I dropped my car off at the dealership and they said that my steering rack and pinion needs replaced and that its gonna cost me $1500. I've over my 3/36 but still under 60K miles. They said that this is not considered powertrain so its not covered under the 5/60. Anyone else have a problem with their rack and pinion?

Have not heard of a lot of problems with the rack an pinion assembly. Might try taking it to a private shop for a 2nd opinon. Often times a single worn bushing can cause the symptom you're describing. GL.

Yeah I thought/hoping it was the bump stop in the strut that I've seen in the TSBs floating around on the board but it doesn't seem to be the case.

It can be a number of things from the control arm to the endlink. Definitely get a 2nd opinion before dropping that kind of coin.

the guy above me is correct. it can be a lot of things. what i generally learned through schooling was that the main cause of a thump noise when turning points HIGHLY at the rack and pinion.

I agree with you guys. #1 I don't have 1500 right to drop on my car and #2 the fact that they can't really tell me whats wrong and pretty much saying that the noise seems to be coming from the rack and pinion so it needs replaced doesn't make me feel good.

I have the same noise on my car and i think its a an axle or a controll arm. It also could be a strut mount. But again i have 143k on my car everything is original and its been raced alot

Alien21 if what you say is true then it probably means it has to do with the gears that the axle is attached to not the axle itself. If the axle itself is bad then he will feel heavy vibration when the car is moving.

yeah.. i know what you mean, but if this isn't your fault what so ever then you can still get it under warranty. Go in for an inspection and don't let them screw you over by saying you were probably racing. raise hell if you have to, but get your car fixed under warranty as soon as possible. Also, raise hell if they don't give you a rental car. I did and I got everything done for free when i had the 3rd gear issue.

What i ment is that i work for Nissan and we get almost the same noise and to correct it we tighten the axle nut. sometimes they come loose just a little and it makes the noise. Damn i didnt get the rental when i did my 3rd gear but on other hand it was done in one day

Sigbrown,

Right after purchasing my SI (08) about 2600 miles in I had the same issue. They replace the Steering racka nd pinion under warranty. Seems strange that you have the same issue. I see a service bulliten issued for it as well.
