There are more than a few peeps that burn Mobil 1 in K20 motors as well.

I have had great luck with Pennzoil Platinum though in the 5w-30 flavor. Walmart sells it in 5 quart jugs for $20.

I've heard a lot of good things about Valvoline MaxLife too. I think it's about ~$15 for a 5 quart jug. Even though it's a "seal conditioning" oil, people have run it in new motors with no problems. Plus, it's on the thicker side when compared to other 5w-30's which should help a bit with consumption too.

Interesting. I thought worn piston rings were a more likely cause? I burn through a quart every 500-1000 miles, but the car still gets 30 mpgs.

I used to use royal purple when I first switched to synthetic and it seemed to consume that a fair amount even when the car had very low mileage. I switched to castrol syntec and havent had an issue since although my car only has 47k miles but hey, might as well try something different and see.

With dumbestiks, valve seals will usually puff a little smoke on startup after sitting, while rings will smoke under heavy load.
