Heard some forecasts for a harder hitting recession in the midst of winter. *If* it does happen they are predicting it will be allot worse than the one we just went through.

isn't a recession defined by shrinkage (teehee..i said shrinkage) in 2 quarters...i thought we're recording like <1% gain

Whether it happens is anyone's guess. none of the so called experts are able to predict that, look at how many financial whiz's got hammered by the recent downturn.

But it doesn't take a brainiac to figure out we are in long term trouble. When you ship a huge amount of jobs to Mexico and China, import every thing we use from China, and then borrow money from China it doesn't take much to predict another recession does it ?. When will we face the facts that we have people in our society that must work in the manufacturing sector ?, we can't ship out industrial base to other countries without paying big. We can't have a nation where everyone is a doctor, lawyer or engineer, as appealing vocations they may be we can't have a productive nation of white collar professions. The middle class is getting hammered right now and without the middle class supporting economic activity the nation will be stagnant. Kill the middle class and everything goes downhill from there - less taxes (corporate and personal), less social programs, worse family issues, increased violence, worse education, deteriorating infrastructure, on and on and on...... . Our politicians are such fuck-ups, their leading us down a path of self destruction.

a few economic whizs already predicted another downturn. The whole economy is being propped up by the stimulus (in other words, every manufacturing, production, and consumer spending is fake ... ie. Car sales will drop like rock in the 3rd quarter. The whole recovery is a masquarade that can not last past the winter of 2010 ..... and once people see through it, which they will eventually do ....... boom!, depression style.

the U.S has gone from almost full employment to huge unemployment in a short period of time. Their economic growth numbers may improve but employment will never get back to low levels of the recent past. The U.S. middle class has been devastated and without them buying goods our economy is set to be equally poor.

Increasing oil prices will be the only help to our economy, though a high loonie will hurt us, and Ontario will resemble Newfoundland 15 years ago, basically a have not province.

I am definitely a believer that we haven't dug ourselves out yet. Looking at the markets a lot, there is no substance behind the comeback we've had since March. The bubble will burst again.

srsly, china and the richer mideast countries could fuck the US (economy) up badly if they wanted to (as well as a couple of those others ones mentioned), literally in a day. Canaduh would of course get the negative fallout from this too.

The US is already doing a pretty good job of that by printing $$ and spending $$$ they don't have.

I made a decision years ago to stay in an industry that was not affected by economic swings. It was a lower paying job at the time, but I thought at least I would keep working all the time and not worry about being laid off every so often. I thought avoiding lay-offs might pay for itself in the long run, and I think it has. I just don't worry about economic changes as it doesn't affect my work at all.

I do worry about the overall economy and the direction our province and country is headed, while it doesn't really affect me much it pisses me off that our government sees certain industries as being expendable and don't realy care about jobs being shipped to other countries.

^ What industry is that?

The problem with my career (although the family business is still in the works) is that I'm climbing the wrong ladder. It's too short, but I'm reasonably protected from swings in the economy. I turned down my dream job a few years back to follow my dream (that didn't work out) and now that company is in really hard times, and may not exist soon.

Being an adult really isn't what I would have expected, although the times are different now than what I saw my father deal with 20 yrs ago.

So you're financially independant? By that I mean: You don't work for someone else and you have a positive net value (ie: no debt at all!!!) ?

Why on earth do people on this (or any other) forum leave the "-uck" out of fuck? It's all well and good to quote from a movie, but at least don't bowdlerize it.

If you're going to say fuck, type it out and leave out the silly ellipsis. Does anyone here live in such a sheltered world that you believe we'll be scandalized by a few curse words? We are not your grandmother. We will not faint and require smelling salts just because someone has engaged in a little profanity.

yep, we're not getting out of the hole. my company has made a very stupid cutback yesterday! all overtime will not be paid after 40 hours, it will be paid after 44 hours. yeah i know it s the law, but i ve been w/ the company for 5 years and always gotten paid for overtime after 40 hours. now bc it's 44 hours, i can see a LOT of people leaving the company.

now if they're gonna ask me to do overtime, I will flat-out say no. if i get fired over this just cuz i refuse to do overtime now. It'll be considered as a blessing.

Umm dude, your buds aren't going anywhere. With the printing industry being in the shape it's in where the hell are they going, how are their skills transferrable. And to b!tch over 4 hours of work between what makes and what doesn't make overtime is just stupid when you can easily be replaced.

There are a ton of people that don't get ANY sort of OT, so please save me the bs.
