My wife has an iPhone 5c that she has never synched or backed up to iTunes or the cloud. She has manually saved her data via just plugging it into her computer and copying and pasting the files.

Well her screen has died. The phone seems to work (ie power on) but the screen is blank (black) and the touch interface doesn’t work. As it is still under warranty Apple will fix it but she will lose all her data. My guess is they’ll give her a refurbished phone.

Is there any way to retrieve the data?

Whenever you connect the phone to a computer you get the following message on the phone (I’m guessing because it hasn’t synched with iTunes)

In order to access the storage you need to click on “Trust” but since we can't click on it, we can't access the storage.

We can see that the files are all still there

But when going into this folder

All we see is

Any ideas? Apple told my wife of 2 services that she can take the phone to that will retrieve the data and not void warranty, but they warned her they're around $1,000. At that point I might as well just pay to have the screen replaced.

Right click on the folder Select "properties" and remove the check mark "Hidden" maybe that might work?

Good tip, but the "Hidden" checkbox is not checked. The "Properties" window indicates that there are no files or folders and the total size is 0 bytes.

I have tested this with another working iPhone. And if I don't click on the "Trust" option on the phone, I get the same behaviour.

Search for 'iTools' ... I've used it, but the sources always look kinda shady ala malware...

Does she have a screen lock/passcode? If so, that needs to be entered before accessing the pictures. Security should the phone be stolen data on the drive still isn't accessible.

Yes only pics and vids (not contacts or anything else)

Just the standard "slide to unlock". No password or number.

Why not just sync with itunes?

Don't need to anything on the phone side, just plug it in and let itunes do the back-up and once your wife gets the new phone all she needs to do is sync up with the back-up and everything is restored.

Stupid response: I didn't really think about that. I assumed when I connect with phone to the computer to sync with iTunes, I will still get this prompt which I can't click on. (My guess is after granting permission to iTunes just once, then the popup is no longer displayed.

I'll install iTunes and give it a try and see what happens.

In OSX there's a stock tool called Image Capture.app that will pull down pics and vids. Try connecting it to a Mac and using that.

Thanks, I don't own or know anything about OSX so I'll try to get a friend with a Mac to give me a hand.

or does your version of windows have the option of AutoPlay? I tried it with my work laptop and I can bypass the "trust option" and it will ask to import pictures.

On Windows 8 I tried all of the AutoPlay options (Ask me, import, open) each one is resulting in the computer not detecting any files

I even tried right clicking on the device and selecting to import

When using another working iPhone if I don't click on the "Trust" button on the phone, I get the exact same behaviour. The device shows as having data on it, but when clicking into the folder(s) they are empty. If I try again and click on "Trust" I can then see all of the files.

I installed iTunes, plugged in the defective iPhone and got this message

I thought, yes this will help me bypass the prompt on the phone. Clicking "Continue" gave me this window

I noticed that when I installed iTunes, the iPhone was no longer being displayed under "My Computer".

When I installed iTools it would say "Your device is not connected to PC yet. Please connect via USB to get started"

I thought it may not be recognizing it since it was not being displayed in "My Computer"

So I uninstalled iTunes and bang, the iPhone is displaying again under "My Computer". However, it looks like iTools requires iTunes, so I'm gong to try reinstalling it again and trying iTools again.
