I have yet to see an actual post showing how this is done so I decided to take away all of the fear and take some pictures so I can show everyone just how easy it is. I had all of the dash parts stolen so as I was putting them back in I took some pictures.

But you need 4 parts. The first part you need is the actual cup holders from the 96-98 Civic. You will also need the plastic square that will become the radio surround. The last 2 parts are optional but make mounting the radio MUCH easier. They are the right and left radio brackets. They were an option in 96-98 and are pretty cheap and make this much easier so go ahead and pick them up...

The first thing I did was put the CD player in the 96-98 assembly. If you have the radio brakcets this is just as easy as mounting it in the top location. The CD player just bolts right in. It will look like this when the CD player is in the 96-98 Cup Holder Assembly.

Now you must remove the arm rest section of the center console. In order to do this there are 2 screws that are close the back seat and 2 screws that are closer up. Remove them and then remove the Arm Rest console.

Then you must remove the shift boot console. In order to do this you must unscrew the shift knob and remove the screws that hold the console.

Now you must remove the 99-00 Cup Holder assembly which can be done by removing a series of 6 screws. 4 of the screws are to the right and left of the cubby hole and the other 2 are located near the floor. You may now keep the 99-00 Cup Holder Assembly in case you decide to return the car to stock or sell it or throw it away.

You must also remove 12 volt power plug console. This has 2 screws which are located near the top. I am assuming you have already removed your CD player from its origional location and therefore it is assumed you have a hole in your dash where the CD player used to be...

The wiring harness that is currently located in your car that plugged into your CD player is long enough that you can go ahead and pull it down to the new radio mounting location. Gently pull it down to where the 12 Volt Power Plug Console would have been.

Now plug the CD player into the cars radio wiring harness and bolt the 96-98 Cup Holder in where the 99-00 Cup Holder used to be located. Replace all of the consoles by following the opposite directions from above. The finished product should look like this:

Note that my car contains the 99-00 Civic DX radio block of plate Part #220475 PANEL, RADIO *NH1L*

I will be editing this how to to make it easier to read as well as posting pictures of the console removal process. I was just bored sitting here in Orlando and deicided to get this started...

If you have any questions feel free to AIM or E-mail me the addresses are located in my Signature...

Awsome I've been thinking about doing this for a long time now.. Does it have to be the 96-98 cup holders? I like my 99-00 ones better

What are some of the benefits of doing this. Does it make it harder to steal the radio? Also why not leave the stock radio in at the top so that if a thief is doing a "walkby" he will only see a stock radio and keep walking.

theft deterrent.. if they see the stock radio, they won't assume there's an aftermarket one in there..

I just did the swap today in my 98 civic and it turned out great, i decided that maybe instead of putting in a blank plate i was going to try using fiberglass with a reverse civic sticker and having red behind it for a little added interior flare. Maybe maybe not depends on how gutsy i am.

I like the idea but can't think of anything to put up top in its place........stock cd player........just a waste to me and solid looks crap.........ideally a tv but then the $ vs college issue.................anything other than a tv to go there? I think its the only thing that would really look "right."

Sweet how To man! Im thinking about doing the same thing. and to answer your question about what might look good in the stock location. This is probably what ill do, get a block off plate and mount my V-AFC in it. How do ya'll think that would look/work?

Acctually It's because I need all that extra room that makes cups bounce around or fall out of the holder to be able to put a cup in there. That is because I have the OEM cigarette lighter/ash tray attachment.. I can barely get any cup in there now.. It's not uncommon for me to have to remove the insert just to have enuff room to angle the cup in there. I don't have to worry about it falling out tho sinse they can't tilt too much because the top is right next to my smokin package

im about to do that soon also, as soon passwordjdm.com ever sends me my damn cf block off plate. i been waiting for a month now. they dont even give me a email confirmation or any kind of email at all and not even call me for the shipping delay cause they had to order me a new one from japan. freaking liars, they told me they had one left in stock when i made the call to order it. the cf block off plate is the onlything i have left to get before i put my system in. i got my deck, the cupholder, the optional ashtray and cig lighter, my jl interior speakers, and my amp and wiring.

the only bad thing is that the "lid" on the 96-98 cupholder gets sticky and doesnt like to open/close sometimes, or think about having a drink in the cupholder, and having to remove it every time you need to change the station on your radio.

if you have a remote, it works around the cup holder in my case...

So if I have drinks in it I can still change the stations and tracks but if i need to change CDs I have to remove the drinks...

But you all own Si's you shouldnt be allowing people to drink anything in your car

get all of the parts listed to do the radio install and the vafc fits in there perfectly. You can then fabricate a piece of cf to go around the rest of the area if you want, or you can leave it alone and be able to take out the vafc whenever you want to or lower it down under to hide it.
