im looking to get decent power when my b16a3 is finally rebuilt and put into my hatch. I plan to upgrade the cams, intake manifold, maybe a throtle body and get a good header. which stage 1 cams are the best out there right now?skunk2?crower?blox? what manifold should i run? also should i even get a throttle body? i herd it doesnt really help out much. whats everyones opinion on headers also?
Vague but; S2S1 cams, ITR IM/TB/header, 2.5" exhaust, Hondata or similar tuned. That would give you considerable gains over a stock setting. And in a hatch, it'll be pretty good.
The b16 engine is very responsive to modifications of all sorts. Almost every area can be improved on with significant results. Typically producing 140 whp in stock trim its not difficult with the right modifications to gain another 50-60 whp and still retain 100k+ mile longevity.
The bottom end on the b16 is incredibly strong and can handle 9500 rpm up shifts on a regular basis.
The stock cylinder head is also plenty good for the small b16 engine. nothing more than a valve job and itr style bowl blend is needed.
this is a list of modifications that will show significant improvements when done correctly. -header -cams -cold air intake system -intake manifold -exhaust system -compression increase -high flow or no catalyst -engine management -fuel injectors 310cc
typically the intake header and exhaust is already installed on most cars and people are looking for more. As a general rule i like to compare the itr vs the grs. basically the same motor but one has the above areas stepped up a notch (intake, header, exhaust, cams, compression, throttle body etc.) for an extra factory rated 25 hp increase. using that same model take it 2 notches up on each area. This also creates synergy (1+1=3) between the modifications giving you a larger increase in power as some modifications depend on other areas greatly.
for compression the head can be milled safely .025 inch and still clear any cam with OEM pistons. good for about .5 compression. add in flat faced valves for an additional .3 and you get a nice 11:1 ratio with good combustion space shape. also able to run fine on 91 octane.
Pick a quality name brand spring, retainer, and stage 2 cam with cam gears. the valve spring pressure doesnt need to exceed 210#'s@.500 lift. beyond that pressure cam lobe wear and rocker arm wear is greatly accelerated.
For the exhaust 60mm (most aftermarket exhausts) will be fine with a test pipe.
headers can make a big difference in power if your budget permits get the best either a hytech or an smsp will yield the highest power gains. the b16 doesn't need a large tube header so stay away from those as it will destroy the midrange power.
the AEM or comptec cold air intakes are excellent choices.
the ITR intake manifold works great and helps make the top end power really shine with all the other support mods.
hondata or equivalent engine management with a 310cc injector.
throttle body doesn't need to be too big 62mm itr, 60mm bored to 64mm or aftermarket 68mm are all fine. none of them will give anymore or less power. but still will make more than stock with all the right support mods.
done right this will easily make 180+whp on the average dyno jet and possibly 190+.
I made a video on building this motor several years ago that also offers tons of info while documenting a 200whp pump gas b16 build step by step. If you get a chance check it out. intertune.tv

very true, if your lookin at 170-180 + whp goals its not that difficult however it may be costly. imo boost would be a cheaper way to go but if your dead set on NA. a competetion port/polish head with a .10 mill, ITR valve train with skunk2 stage 1 cams and gears, a nice 2.5 inch collector header with matching exhaust a power chamber intake, with a ITR or skunk2 IM, and of course hondata tune on stock bottom end would net you around 180-190 whp on stock injectors. but you would need an adjustable FPR.
i ran this same set up on my old si and hit 185whp @ 9krpm on a stock bottom end. but in the end if i had it to do all over again i'd prob spend the money on a nice supercharger or turbo kit and modestly boost for 200+ whp.
like i did with my new fg2 just a comptech supercharger and regular bolt ons its gonna push 250+whp lol. but its up to you what your goals are.

Ok im going to bring this thread back from the dead. I actually ordered my JDM B16 SIR II swap yesterday from hmotors. As for mods i decided im going to keep things pretty stock. These are my plans Exedy Stage 1 clutch-i already have ACT 12.5pound flywheel-already have and sometime in the future i will try to get CTR/ITR Cams JDM ITR Header Buddy Club spec II exhaust system Whale Penis Intake Im not to sure if i want to upgrade the intake manifold to a ITR. I've herd that you may gain top end but your going to lose the mid range power. And on these motors thats what it really lacks. What does everyone think about my plans? good or bad? also whats everyones thought on the ITR manifold?
