Today will likely be my first day on the trainer for this winter. Gonna go put my crap tire on a beater wheel in preparation. God, I hate that thing. What trainer do you have? Spend the $10 a month and use trainerroad, it will help a ton getting through those workouts! So much better than just pedaling aimlessly without any real specific goal, really helps to stay on track. Once you sign up, join the clubsi team. Only two members, not off to a good start
I have a crappy Graber mag trainer. Nothing special. I do 1 hour stints where I try to mimic one of my regular loops. Some "hills" some sprints, decent cadence spinning. I'm only good for an hour on the thing before it just gets too uncomfortable.
I load up the DVR with car shows and go at it. Hoping to do three times a week.

I have to say--HUGE difference in fitness level on the trainer this year vs. last year. I'm able to put in a MUCH harder effort and not crap out. I sweat buckets, too.

I picked up the wahoo kickr trainer. On erg mode with trainerroad and sufferfest its amazing. With 2 babies under 2 my road time was diminishing and my waist was growing. This combo of power based training and video/trainerroad can give you very targeted workouts with minimal bs spin time.

48 out for today's 18-miler. Coming off of a cold, on heavy backup bike with a bit of wind, so yeah--slow.
I'm so much slower in the winter anyway. The air is like a wall at this time of year (plus less aero clothing) Wut dat thermodynamics do?
I'll get another 20 in on Thurs and MAYBE another 20 on Sat, but that might be inside on the trainer. We'll see weather-wise.

Rainy/shitty today (which sucks, because it was warm--53), tomorrow is supposed to be the same and it gets cold on Saturday. I think the road miles will be few and far betweenfor the next few months.
HOWEVER--clearly I trained effectively this past season because I'm crushing on my trainer. I'm so much stronger on it over last year. I can't get over it. Looks like my trainer sessions will be a lot more effective this year vs. last year.
I think Santa is gonna bring me one of them China carbon 50mm wheels this year, too. This one seller (DIY Bike) looks like they make a really nice product. It'll be about the same weight as the Ultegra wheel it replaces but with a fuckton more aero. And it'll look pimp.

If you want a way to truly measure your effectiveness on the trainer - get something to measure power. Crank, wheel, power trainer - all have a good place in effective training.
And get on trainerroad!

ugh cx race tomorrow - going to be in the 20s
That looks MISERABLE.
Be sure to have someone take pics of your misery tho!!!

I'm too cheap to spend $$$ on a power meter. I'm going low-tech in that I'm spinning bigger gears harder and longer than I used to.
As for trainerroad, I think my setup is too low-tech. I don't even have a rear wheel sensor for my cycle computer.

Ebay China carbon--just the rear
That Garmin option sounds interesting. I can't say I even understand the whole concept of how it works (trainerroad) in terms of an interface between my low tech trainer and whatever.
Meanwhile, I'll bang out another hour today.

My quads are pretty sore from yesterday's trainer workout. It looks like I'll be able to keep a very good level of fitness over the winter if I continue to hit it hard indoors like this.
I'm more motivated on the trainer now because I'm so much more effective on it this year.

Camera rider seems like a beast to me. Cool course in that there was barely any portaging. I dunno if I have the balls to ride that fast on hardpack snow.
I could feel the cold through the screen.

I just banged out another drenched hour on mine. 3 hours for the week. Plus 8.5 miles of road running.

Looks like next Saturday is supposed to be 49 out (that could change drastically in a week) so if I get out there that day, I'll clear 2800 miles for the year. I'm content with that.

I got out yesterday and flatted 20 miles in (11th flat of the year). Turned out something in my pump's head was broken, so no air. Thankfully I was only as mile from my car, but I go it screwed out of the extra laps I was going to take around the state park where I was parked.
Ridiculously warm today (60+), but pretty windy with rain threatening. I have to see if I can sneak away from my wife's clutches.

Its been a very unseasonably cold December so I have spent zero time on the bike this month because I don't have any winter clothes for riding. The wife came through with a sweet cycling jacket but I still need some gloves and tights if I'm going out in 35 degrees.

I managed a damp, grimy 20 yesterday. It was 64 out (in RI, 3 days before Christmas, which is insane), sothat made it pleasant. Felt pretty strong, so it seems like I'm doing effective trainer workouts.
Hope to fit a run in tomorrow, then a couple of skip days for celebrations.
