I've been banging it out on the trainer every single day the last 2 weeks. Didn't get my long weekend ride in last weekend due to mothers day, but this weekend my parents will be in town so my dad and I should be able to get in a decent ride. I'd like to do a 20 mile long run on sunday, but I'm not sure I'll be able to.

My goal is to have over 600 miles for the month of May.

Only 5 weeks till taper time for the big race, so I'm slowly getting everything ready. Have to pick up a 11-28 cassette for the Zipp 404/808 combo I'm renting. Couer D' Alene is a pretty hilly (rolling really) course, but I really want to have a solid run, so saving the legs is key!

9 mile time trial tonight. Flat, somewhat curvy and moderately windy. I was in the "Merckx" division i.e. a crit legal bike with no aero equipment. Obviously no pack and no drafting.

I haven't checked exactly on my computer but I believe I averaged around 22 mph. With 20ish riders split among five or six different divisions my place doesn't really mean much.

Just looking to do this three or four times this year and try to push that average pace up.

I'm a stay at home dad, with a 18 month old (along with 6 and 8 year olds that are at school) that I have to watch every day. I take her with me in the stroller for my runs every weekday, then we go home and I lay her down for a nap while I ride the trainer for an hour. If I didn't do that, I'd only be able to ride one day a week (on the weekend). This way, it's easy to get in an extra hundred miles a week, then tack on whatever rides I do outside on the weekend. With my 140.6 training taking up between 12-17 hours a week, I have gto make sure there is plenty of family time on the weekends. \:\)

I gotta tell you though...those trainer rides (while short) are fairly intense, and my bike fitness has skyrocketed in the last 2 months.

Awesome

I've got 2 Cat 5 races this weekend and a 4/5 race next weekend. I'll probably put in for Cat 4 after those. I've got the 10 starts. I just want to test out my fitness a few more times before I commit.

Oh I don't doubt that they are intense, you get out of it whatever you put into it, itcan be just as good as riding on the road, it's just hard (for me at least), to put the same time/effort in on a trainer as I would doing actual riding. I get bored so easily and unmotivated on a trainer.

It took me a long time to get used to the idea of riding the trainer every day. Now it's just another part of the daily schedule. \:D

My dad and I are doing the 100k Tour of Long Beach tomorrow since my parents are in town and we waned to get some training in (we're both doing IM Couer d' Alene next month).

Can't you pit, repair it, and take a free lap?

I'm course marshaling right now. Had a decent enough race and finished just behind the first chase group behind a solo guy who won by breaking away early in the last lap. I was with that group until the rider immediately in front of me slid out in the last turn and I had to swerve around him. I raced pretty conservatively due to it raining all night, all morning and all through my race.

Most impressive move of the race was two guys who either took the first turn too hot or got forced off the course by someone else going to fast. They bunny hopped the curb, rode through someone's soggy lawn, and rejoined the pack.

it was wheels in/wheels out if you got a flat and i didnt have a spare wheel and i was racing in the same race as my teammate so i couldnt take his plus the free lap rule ended with 5 to go, so i just said screw it. was a flat, fast race though, 24.5 mph avg for 37 minutes.

I see. That blows.

We had a wet eight-corner course and averaged 22 mph. And I actually felt pretty good fitness wise. I think I'm ready to upgrade largely because I'm tired of some of the squirrely handling in the 5s.

We have a hand cycling race right now. This guy must be a national champion based on his jersey. I'm not sure how well my phone pic is going to show it but he is an absolute beast.

Had a great 70 mile ride today....not counting when I flew head first over the bars and helmet first into the bike path.

No major injuries and no bike damage, but it rang my bell big time.

70 miles, awesome. you going to replace the helmet, you always should after a good bang. A few years ago I had just dropped $200 on a lid and a week later was riding on the paved bike path and just had a freak slip up and banged my head. It sucked replacing the helmet but i'd rather lose $200 then be a vegetable.

Today I only got 32 miles in on the road bike, averaged 19mph \:\( It was so windy and cloudy I thought I was going to get stuck in the rain.

Yeah, it's got a good size ding in the front left, so I'll be getting a new one for sure. Left shoulder, chest and right knee all have some minor rash. Had to hit the brakes, too much front, and over I went. Just barely got my hands out in front of me, so it could have been worse. Really glad I didn't damage my Oakley's!

Its the middle of May and its f'n 50 degrees. And its raining.

I raced today but was kind of chicken shit about it. There were two fast downhill wet corners that I had no interest in taking with a group of squirrelly riders. I backed off the lead group of about 8 riders during the second lap and worked with three riders to just hold position and finish. And then won the sprint among our little group.

I haven't checked the Garmin data but it won't be anything impressive. Races lasted about 45 minutes and I finished in the top half.

Hopefully it will be dry next weekend.

man i had a rough race today. cat 4/5 road race, 40 miles. started off ok, but like 2 miles in a dude breaks and no one goes after him. he gets maybe 200 meters before someone else decides to go after him. he gets a gap and im like shit i better go to. rolling almost 35mph to catch this guy, i catch the other guy trying to bridge and we catch the guy in like a mile. i look behind and my friend jeff came with us so we have a 4 man group like 10-20ish seconds off the pack. something like that. we hit the first climb and freaking roll up it, but the pack catches us. as we sit down at the top, another guy breaks. no one chased him. so dumb me leads the peloton for like 3 miles before i just stop pedaling, slide to the left so someone else can pull. it was fast first few miles and i tried to slide back into the pack to recover. i was hanging around the front but man were people pushing the pace on the hills( i saw anywhere from 7%-11% for the hills) and im usually a good hills rider. i lasted 15 miles before i lost touch with the pack. so then i was solo for the next 15 miles, rolling about 23-25 on the flats trying to not let any of the other dropped riders catch me. i pick off 2 other guys who got dropped and put a gap on them, but they teamed up and caught me around 30 miles and i hopped on their wheel and we rotated pulls the rest of the race. i forgot my HR monitor, but i had to be at 90% of max the whole race. the last 10 miles sucked. every time i took a drink i threw it back up into my mouth and i was fighting cramps. but i wasnt going to quit. i ended up finishing 29th out of 52 including 5 riders who DNF. i had absolutely nothing left at the end. all in all im not to dissapointed cuz like i said, i gave it all i had. i got a nice tan and a hell of a good workout in. heres the garmin link. 40 miles in 2:00.xx, 20.3 mp avg., ascent was around 530 ft a lap. lap was 6.3 miles. im glad i didnt do the 52 mile 3/4 race. 10 guys dropped out by the 2nd lap.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/87050435

oh yeah, and the guy that attacked at the top off the first climb was OTF for the whole race. on the last lap he had a 50 second lead then popped. should have waited one more lap! lol

I could have raced yesterday but woke up to wet roads and decided I wasn't doing that two weekends in a row. Ended up being a beautiful day and might have dried up by the 4/5 race, but my bike would still have been filthy from driving out there and needed a cleaning again, so I didn't mind skipping.

And, actually, I really haven't gotten out to just ride in what seems like forever. Its been racing or trainer time. So got up this morning, left at 7 am and went out for almost 40 miles. With no traffic had some good opportunities to get into the drops and drill it for several minutes at a time. Probably some of the best training I've had. 38.8 miles, 1,800 feet of climbing, 18.4 mph average. Nothing crazy but good pace for me on a ride in the city.

As an added bonus, I had my first encounter with a suicidal squirrel this morning. Doing somewhere between 25 and 30 mph when I seem him coming from the left and already on my side of the road. Not much I can do at that point but clench my teeth and pray. Luckily, it bounced off the side of my rim. A couple of riders I had recently passed were behind me and at the next light said it turned around after hitting me and made a mad dash for one of their bikes. Good way to spike one's blood pressure.

A couple weeks of no racing and barely much bike riding leading into last night's Tuesday Night World Championships.

Show up last night and begin warming up. Its about 94 f'n degrees at 7 pm and my legs feel a bit dead. Pull up to the line with about 30ish other riders. I spend the entire race near the back of the lead group and I always seem to be riding the wrong wheel. I'll be drafting someone and they gradually start getting gapped, so I pass them to catch up and recover. I do this for about 13 laps as our lead group drops from about 20 to 10.

With one to go I'm hanging on. On the hill on the back side of the course I push to improve my position and simply run out of steam - its hot as shit, my heartrate feels pegged and I just can't advance. Fall of the pace a bit and finish about 10th.

15 laps, 23.2 mph average, 177 bpm average and 189 bpm max. I've gotten well into the 190s before so it seems I should have had a bit more to go, but the heat just seemed to wipe me out.

Good luck!

We have a hilly road race on Sunday that I'm going to skip. I can think of plenty of other options to ride by myself for two hours that don't involve driving an hour each way and paying $50 to do it. My training has been slacking and I'm just going to focus on preparing for a crit coming up at the end of the month.

yeah hopefully i dont get dropped off the pack in 15 miles again like the last hilly race i did. that was mainly due to trying to race on a krispy kreme donut. dumb idea. heres my new to me weapon for the off season from road. all my buddies are tranisitioning to cross after the road season is over so i decided to join them so i wont be lonely on the road.
