Update.
Took wildout advice, put a few bags of top soil over the landscaping cloth...then i got the natural mulch in black. Wasn't happy with the outcome as i played it safe (wanted red).
Fuck this shit...
Went back and got red:

I installed a small sprinkler system too while I was at it. The leaves of the tree are too low to use a conventional sprinkler so i put two of those HD orbit ones that cover a perimeter, i put two at at the corners of the fence, took a while to tweak them. Shit looks promising.
I am only worried i might have put too much mulch, there are 6 bags in there, i put most of it towards the rocks to make it look "full" and kept 1 inch of coverage if that by the tree trunk.

obvious brag post is obvious
Fertilized twice already, put the corn meal down to prevent germination of weeds. Put down some grub ex on my neighbour's lawn, (saw some grubs when we pulled an old juniper with a chain attached to a truck).

^^ No issues with bringing grub ex. You will run into issues bring fertilizer and herbicides combined products (Weed n Feed). You can bring fertilizer and pesticides seperately though
Vas, this guy doesn't stock, he orders every year based on his what people want. I'll email you his contact details so he can add you to his list. You order what you want in Feb, and you pick up in April

Risky it looks good. You don't got to worry about it being too much mulch aside from the fact that you mixed colours, eventually some red will fade a bit and because of neighbourhood animals it will get mixed a bit with the black mulch underneath.
Wayne what happened to edging it up lol
You won't have a problem bringing anything back from the states. The pesticides are all legal to own here, just not legal to use on your lawn. Dumb loophole.
I brought back a trunk full last year, 3 big containers of weed-b-gone, 1 of weed & grass killer for between the steps/stones. Ant, Spider & bug killer, hate bugs inside my house. 4 big bags of fertilizer for the grass and 1 thing of fertilizer for the tree.
I declared everything and they checked my trunk at the border, your good.

Wow, that looks nice. Is that a ladder leading to your tree house Maybe I'll do the same with my front yard tree. Picked up some seeds and fertilizer from Costco and the topsoil I posted from crappy tire (12 bags). Now since I put that ez seed on about two weeks ago and haven't mowed yet but want to do the topsoil/over seed task, should I mow first or just let everything grow for about 4weeks and then mow?
Do you have a pic of the current state? If the seed roots have grabbed hold of the existing soil your good to go to mow, if not then still got to wait a bit.
Did you loosen the existing soil by racking or aerating when you put the seeds down the first time?
yeah best watering times are evening after sunset (sun won't dry up the water), and early mornings while dew is still there and the sun isn't strong enough to dry it
Best advice right here

The problem with coloured mulch is that it will eventually fade and turn white and look like shit. Been there done that, now I just use natural cedar mulch, seems to hold up a lot better. Which reminds me, I need to weed the garden and lay down a good 6inches.

The lawn pretty much looks like Risky's lawn maybe a bit worse.
I checked this morning before leaving for work and I don't think the seeds have sprouted so I'm going to wait (man my lawn's gonna look like a field).
I aerated before laying down the ez seed.
Is it a good idea to still go ahead with the new stuff? Wanna do it this weekend.
Any chance I can get on this too? I know that you don't know me and all but Risky can vouch for me [quote=Chocolate Canuck]Risky, let me know if you are making a run to the border, if you are taking the F150, I need some more weed stuff too. Same here and the grub ex too.
Pretty good info on grubs here and what to use. http://askville.amazon.com/long-scots-grubex-kill-grubs/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=1850023

I bought the expensive mulch, all natural. Apparently it's better and colour should last longer, hoping for the best lol.
I am not going to states any time soon so you guys let me know when you go

Vas I'd suggest you rent a sod cutter from Home Depot since you have a truck and are handy, and then order some sod from Fairgreen. You'll get results much faster but it'll be more expensive (couple hundred dollars... but those seeds & fertilizer your buying probably arent cheap either).

Yes, it's in bags. Go for the 100% natural stuff, it's about $7/bag. I used a total of 6 bags.

I'm continuing to water like crazy and it seems to be working.
Still go a few crappy spots, but overall it looks much better then 3 weeks ago. I'm loading up on topsoil tomorrow and I've got to track down some grub killer for the back grass. I'm also digging up the tree base and filling it with mulch.

Shovel full or two where ever you need it and spread it with a rack is what I do. Apply seed with the spreader, then rake it gently into the topsoil. I bought a wheel barrow last week and it made things a lot easier. Lugging topsoil, weeds, grass clippings, whatever. It was a vital purchase.
My back grass still looks like crap, so I might do some before and after pics starting tomorrow.
