Thx. Lots of small holes from where I pulled big weeds and a few yellow spots from the dogs, but Im happy with it so far.
I'll take a pic of my back grass tomorrow and you will be sadly disappointed lol. It looks like straw.

That's the mulch.
I was recommended to go with Scott's dense shade, i tried sun/shade and didn't work. My area never gets any sun so hopefully dense shade helps.

My front lawn is like the desert. Shitty soil, west facing house = brown grass.

^ not this early in the season. people probably think you are a brown person
It's not brown yet, but it will be once August rolls around. It's nothing but sand up here, shitty for keeping anything alive.

Back grass before. I pulled 1 brown recycle bag full of weeds, dumped 10 bags of top soil amd a spreader full of seed. Will update next weekend.
I also discovered an awesome tool for pulling weeds. It's an automotive tool of some sort, made by Snap On, but I don't know why I have it. Works great on the weeds though.

Add I just bought that on sale at crappy for $3.99 . Good thing I only needed 1 bag.
So I just learned about the TSC store (got a flyer in the mail). They have some decent deals for the bigger sized lawn care stuff so I don't have to buy multiple small bags. I grabbed some stuff from them yesterday.
Scotts Coated big 5kg bag grass seed $34.99
Scotts retarded huge 19.8KG all season fertilizer $53.99 They have cheaper for smaller lawns too...
Cheap top soil for $1.79
I finally took a real good look at my lawn and the thatch has grown so thick, that I'm going to have to de-thatch as well. I did it manually 2 years ago & eff doing that shit again, so I purchased the yardworks de-thatcher from crappy tire. Hopefully its decent, I shouldn't of put all this shit off to so late, I would of been able to get it aerated cheap when the college kid came around 2 weeks ago. Bah
Explains de-thatching...
Up early to get a start on this and hopefully it doesn't take too long. I'm expecting 3-4 hours or work.

Another cheaper option if you can find a place, is a sod farm. There are several near me and they sell seed in bulk. I bought a 10kg bag for about $25.
I also discovered that Rona sells slightly damaged bags of stuff for real cheap. They had bags of mulch for $1.99.

People say it fades away and it really depends. I have whatever came with the house that's 2-3 years old and it looks almost exactly as good as the stuff I put up around my front tree. Quality and if it's in shade obviously matter the most. Hoping mine stays red for a long time being in the shade and of good quality.

See the stuff in my front yard is washed out, but the same stuff in my backyard is still nice and red?
Bah I got sick, probably teh aidz so all I could muster up the strength for was to spread some more seed, cut the back lawn for the first time, service the lawn mower, and water.

IIRC your house faces west right? There is probably significantly less sun in your backyard during your regular day compared to your front yard.

Went to Canadian tire and bought the scotts mulch to average down my cost. Since I overpaid at home depot $7/bag, I bought all the ripped/shit bags from crappy tire and demanded a sale. They wouldn't give me a sale at first because it was already an item that was on sale. One thing to another, i got the cashier to knock off a few more dollars

Ignore the shitty staining on the fence, the neighbour did it on a 38 degree day when he put up the fence. I'll fix it in the fall.
Only had enough time yesterday to do the front.
Here's how it looked with only cutting it on the right and my very first pass with the de-thatcher on the left. Took up a lot of the old shit grass stuck underneath.
After I was done the de-thatching the first pass
Second pass
Clean up
Mowed again to get the remaining last bits
Fertilized, seeded, sodded then seeded again
All that de-thatch took up 4.5 of lawn bags & took 3.5 hours total from start to finish. Some of the soil has already washed away compared to when I laid it down yesterday
