You'll get a lot of answers for this... there's a whole range. At one extreme is "pose running" where you really focus on your form and running an exact certain way. In the middle, some people just work to not strike too far back on their heel. Then there's just running, which I do. The #1 rule though is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you're not getting any aches, then don't make any big changes to your form, or your shoes for that matter.

The only things I can say for sure about form and tips:
* Treadmill running is no substitute for road running, as you might have found. It's good for your cardio but the treadmill changes your gait (toes point more straight) and so you wouldn't want to, say, train for a race, exclusively on the treadmill.

* Run tall. Keep your shoulders up and your head back, it'll help your back feel better and it opens up your airway. If you're not wearing good sunglasses or a visor you might find your head drooping to stay out of the sun; just think about your form every few miles and get that head way up in the air.

Thanks...this sounds stupid...but WTF am i supposed to do with my arms?

I feel like they are in the way. I have read parallel to the ground at the elbow is good...but i tend to feel my hands dropping and my elbows opening up...is that bad/good/does it matter?

I've gone to a few of the Good Form Running seminars put on by Fleet Feet. They give a few good pointers on cadence and basic form. I personally have a habit of kinda tucking my elbows and keeping them at almost a 90 degree angle. They say that it's not right. I've tried their posture and it's really not comfortable for me. Here's the link maybe you'll get some pointers from.
http://www.goodformrunning.com/
This is how I normally keep my arms while running

So have I, they didn't t go away until I became a regular runner. If I just ran intermittently, they would always occur.

Thanks man. I'm hoping that my lower legs simply aren't in running shape yet and that's why their aching. I haven't run ~ 8 months due to my ACL surgery and complications. I have a 5k next month and a 10 mile run in September, so I'm hoping to be ready by then.

Met with the surgeon again today, this time the arthrogram showed a torn meniscus. Either I tore my meniscus again, or the meniscus repair during the ACL reconstruction didn't take. Perhaps this is why my shinsplints are coming back? Running with a torn meniscus would mess up my biomechanics a bit.

I have a 5k this weekend and the 10 miler in September. Registration is already paid for, no refunds. He said I should be back to running in 4-6 weeks post surgery, so I will have to try and plan for the surgery + recovery time + training time for the 10 mile run.

Did 7 miles of trails today with 1000 ft of elevation gain, knocked it out in 55 minutes.
Felt really good.

I really wish I had access to some trails around here. I'm jealous of my brother who lives up by Folsom Lake....hundreds of miles of awesome trails right out his back door.

YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Was looking to finally break 20 this morning... pushed it hard and crossed the line at 19:11! SO FUCKING HAPPY! Previous PR was 20:08. Running hard every day and losing 10 pounds did it for me!

Yeah, breaking 20 is flying.

I'd imagine if I ran a 5k right now, I'd be around 24. Shaving 5 minute off that?

My gf and I just ran the Everest Challenge at Animal Kingdom last night. Knee was sore and slowed me down some. We were in wave 4, which meant we were dodging walkers the entire 5k \:\( There were obsticals to get through, which slowed us down even more. Some dude was taking pictures of his wife during the tires

Don't have official results but my watch says we finished the run in 28:10. There was a scavenger hunt that we had to complete afterwards, so we had to run an additional 2-3 miles solving the puzzles. My watch says we finished overall in roughly 45:00, which should have placed us in the top 10 for co-ed. I'll update when they release the scores online.

Since Ive started running, I'm doing 3:00 run, 2:00 walk x 4, with a 4:00 cool down at the end. My question is, how long should I keep doing this same cycle? Stick with this for 2 weeks, and then go to 4:00 run, 2:00 walk, or something else altogether? What are your thoughts?

Planta fascia acting up.
Sometimes I hate my body.
No running this week, only eliptical or bike.

It's mild, so hopefully only a week off, and than back to only 5km "long" runs.

Jello-c on 19min! 22 is my recent pb, but I'm 8 months off of that.

I say just run till you need to walk, then start up again when you get your wind back. The run segments will quickly get longer, walk segments shorter.

Thanks a million for the kudos guys! I don't really know what part of my ass I pulled this time out of. Just some weight loss (~15 lbs) and hard running every day. I never slowed the drinking though!

My gf and I placed 45/1122 in the race. Our clock time was over by 3 minutes vs my watch time, which would have placed us in top 15, but we had fun anyway \:\)

Tried the Air Max 2012 for a couple runs and determined they were just a hair too small. Took them back to Nike and tried the Vomero because they didn't have any of my size in the Air Max. What a piece of shit! They are too soft and on a 1.5 mile run, my heel and knees hurt so bad that I was done with them.

Went to a running store today and they hooked me up with these:

Brooks PureFlow

Going to try to get out tonight and just get a quick mile or 2 in them to see if they are going to work. Let's hope so! I'm so tired of searching for shoes.

Edit: Went out and did a quick (relatively speaking) mile, 2 hours after some pizza and cheese bread. I couldn't wait to run in them and I think I've finally found a pair I'm going to keep. Recommend these and the reviews by most people online have been positive (unless you run in the rain, and then they kind of suck. But that's what treadmills are for, right? Less chance of bloody nips).

I've been sort of crabby the last 5 days since the wife was out of town and I couldn't do any running. Finally got to go out this evening and had a fantastic run. Beautiful weather, setting sun, and an effortless 11 miles at a 7:18 pace.

I've been running the PureFlow and I really enjoy them. (I wanted the pureconnect but the toe box was WAY too narrow.)

Ran them in the rain last night - I can see why people would comment on that; they were a tiny bit slick. Not so I felt I was going to fall down or anything, but you could feel a little play with each step. Nothing that would make me recommend against it.

I'm not going to read the whole thread - I'm sorry noob here

When you are running, do you always listen to music? Where does your mind go?

I was just thinking about this, as I have been progressing to longer runs. I have been trying my best to focus on feeling good and enjoying the run, my legs, bla bla. But a lot of the time I'm kind of thinking about random stupid things, like my nose is getting snotty or my baby toe is feeling smooshed.

Any thoughts on what I should be focusing on?

did 10k last night. Just for the heck of it.

cardio wise was fine. The pounding. still sucks. But Im not finding the shoes are a problem. My calves are perfectly fine. Just not used to it yet.

Also been trying to work my technique and not over extend/heel strike.

I do about 75% of my runs with headphones...mostly music but sometimes podcasts too. The other times I like to just put shoes on and run....no music, no watch, no gear....and it usually feels fantastic. I just let my mind wander...but usually I'm going over a big upcoming race in my head.

I focus on nothing in particular. My runs aren't some effortless floating exercise though. Running with my dogs helps or running on trails near some running water as well. I just remind myself to try and soak up the sounds/visuals.

But usually, I'm thinking about how my legs hurt, I'm hot, I'm only 3 minutes in and this already sucks etc.

Where do you run? If the answer is treadmill then there is no way to make it enjoyable.
I dont run with music but I will usually have a song stuck in my head and then start making up different lyrics for it.
