I have a cheapie Graber Mag Trainer that was $149 at Dick's Sporting Goods. It folds up quite compactly for storage. I don't leave it set up when I'm not using it. It has a quick release mount so it's a fast setup.
Footprint when set up is the size of the bike with maybe another 10" off of the back wheel and not even 2' wide.
I just throw an old sheet down on the floor so nothing potentially grinds into the carpet, but you could buy a purpose-built mat or a cheap yoga mat to cover your floor.
I also cover the stem with a towel so I don't sweat into the headset and corrode it to shit and I jack up the front wheel with a stack of books so my arms don't fall asleep.

You can see a trainer setup here that another guy posted a few days ago: http://forums.clubsi.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/6108367
I keep a small table beside mine for my towel, drink, and phone. I also have a fan setup in front as it gets hot really fast when you're pedaling indoors. Beside the fan is where I setup my laptop if I'm doing a training video.

I set up next to my wife's recumbent exercise bike, so my remotes and phone sit on that console. Bottle goes in my bottle cage.
My basement is frigid at this time of year, so not much need for a fan. I wipe my head with a towel every few minutes. If your basement is warm, a fan is very wise.
Watching DVR'd Wheeler Dealers and Musclecar on the trainer tomorrow.

Thanks. (no homo) (ah, hell--this is the least heterosexual thread on CSi )
I do a lot to get them, but genetics are responsible for probably 75% of them. It's the same reason I'll never have a six-pack.
I also have very thin wrists/ankles (my wife calls them "dainty" ). Helps everything look bigger.

I could post mine up and win skinniest calves award. Challenge accepted. 13.5" flexed! No idea what mine are, but tall lanky and lots of running doesn't really build calves .
Hopefully getting a bike and riding a lot this summer will help.

I tried to get the same perspective in the photos from the old B/W to the new color pics but it didn't quite work. The B/W pics are from 2010. I believe I was about 235. The color pics are from today weighed in at 201.
I still got plenty of work to do.
