I've been running 3 miles a day, sometimes a little less depending on how I feel, sometimes a little more...my shins are a wreck. I cannot figure out what is going on in my stride to give me these terrible shin splints.

I've tried going slow (10:00 pace) for the first half mile to warm up, but my shins are killing me by then, so I have to walk a bit, then I kick the pace up to 7:30 min/mile until my shins are dead, then I walk etc. What ticks me off is I'm not tired at the end of a 3 mile run. It's my shins that are the limiting factor.

I'm going to meet with the owner of Track Shack next week and see what he has to say. I had my gf take a video last night of me jogging at the end of our run...she didn't zoom on my feet, so I'll have her take it again and see what the hell is going on. I don't heel strike, I run on the balls of my feet. I have tried supported shoes, down to the minimalist shoes I currently wear. I'm bowlegged, which I cannot correct.

Not sure if this is a rest or run through it sort of deal right now as shin splints are something I've had a problem with my entire life.

completed a life goal this morning thst i wanted to complete before my birthday at the end of the month.

i ran for a distance of 13.11 miles(.01 farther than a half-marathonn)

Not too shabby for first time, although you were kind of falling apart at the end - maybe from going out too hard. 2:06 is what I did my first half marathon in.

I just signed up for my first full marathon in January

yeah, i did begin to fall apart after the halfway point.

i want to get better though. i was scheduled to do my hm distance the week of the 24th but when i ran this morning, i wanted to push for 12 instead of 11. when i got to the 6m marker(turn around point), i said effit and kept going for .05 more before turning around.

i see what people mean about it being more mental when you get up that high

My advice...
Your first mile should never be your fastest.
I would calculate your average pace for that run and for your next run go out like 15 seconds slower than that pace and slowly increase your pace till you finish like 15 seconds below your average pace.

Ran my first half marathon today and finished!

Temps at the finish were 87 degrees and I still managed to run it in 2 hours 13 mins.

Started out strong (for me) running just under 9 min miles until mile 5 and felt great.

At mile 8, started leaning more towards 10 min miles and was starting to struggle.

From mile 10 on, I kept telling myself "All you've got is a 5k left"...and myself kept telling myself to shut the hell up because this sucks.

Alternated running/walking for that last 3 miles, but I finished, so I'm pumped! Next race is the Dallas half in December, so I get a couple weeks of rest before I start this all over again.

Thanks guys! I debated the 24 hrs leading up to it whether to wear headphones or not. Decided literally at the last minute to go ahead and wear them since I wore them all during training. I think it helped take my mind off the suck for a bit. Took them out the last mile to hear the crowd cheering. What an awesome feeling!

Haven't been running regularly but need to start since I signed up for a marathon in January.

Ran 5.6 miles yesterday. Per my Garmin app, average overall pace was 9:58/mile and average moving pace was 9:38/mile, i.e. after dropping out the pauses for water and traffic.

Not bragworthy, but I'll take it since I was pushing a jogging stroller the entire time. Need to run and get a baseline pace without the stroller sometime soon to see where I am.

Yeah, I figure it slows me anywhere from 30 to 90 seconds per mile. And at my best last year I could do 5 miles in the 8:15/mile range. I don't think I am horribly far off from that.

I'm not crazy about what it does to my mechanics, but I think I'm getting used to it.

I'm really contemplating running the disney marathon in January. I've never done a half marathon let alone a full, but I really think I want to and can do it. I've been running 3 miles tuesday & thursday and 5-6 miles on saturday for roughly a month or more and I really think by January I could get there.

I dont know why I thought it would be a good idea to sign up for a half on a monday following a weekend of camping and drinking.
There also 1000 ft of elevation gain, not going to be setting any PR's.

That course was no joke.



It was a small race, about 200 people doing the 1/2 and 100 doing a 5 miler.
Ended up 10th overall and 3rd in my age group.
I'm not sure what my exact time was as I forgot to stop my watch when I finished, I was toast. But it was around 1:37.

A little bit, especially after coming back from Louisville. I'm going to focus on some shorter races, so I'll be keeping the long runs to a minimum (9 will probably be my longest for awhile) and I'm hoping that will change my perspective a bit.

It's a bit different when you're trying to squeeze it in with a full time job.

When I have time off, my runs are much more enjoyable, since I get more rest and run when I feel like running, instead of when I can fit it into my day.

I have to find the time and fit my runs in just like people with "real" jobs. 90% of the time I do them at the end of the day after the family has been fed, homework is done, etc. Maybe that's why I enjoy them so much...it's really the only alone time I get.

I'm the same, usually get out around 8:30 or 9pm unless I manage to wake up at 5am for a morning run.
Only problem with running at night is I am wired afterwards and cant fall asleep till like 1am.

I get in a funk period during marathon training (well I mean I don't mean to make it sound like I do it on the regular, once last year, once this year). It turns it into a fucking job.

Hey ampsman, I just came from sorta your neck of the woods, Cupertino. I was only there for a day but a little google maps scanning showed there are some cool looking trails for sure. Lots of green spaces everywhere, lot of elevation though!

Bay area is pretty much trail running mecca in California. Only rival would be the Sierra foothill areas. I'm seriously jealous. Decent trails are at least a half hour drive for me.

Rancho san Antonio in cupertino is one of my favorite spots.

Looking for some help...

I'm 5'7" 173lbs and want to loose some weight. Would like to get down to around 150-155lbs, in 2008 when I moved here I weighed 135lbs lol. My GF and I started walking/running a figure eight that's behind her apartment complex that totals almost a mile.

I haven't run in years. The first few times we did it, we'd walk at a good pace then run for a little and just kept doing this. My shins were killing me. We went to Fit2Run and got some actual running shoes, which are fucking amazing btw.

My shins still hurt a little after getting new shoes. We'll stretch before and after but my damn shins keep hurting. Will this go away after a while? Any advice, suggestions, etc??

I really want to get rid of this beer belly. \:\(

It will go away. I used to get it all the time, now nothing. Just give it some time to recover in between runs (and mix up some bike rides or something).

Yeah, that's what I thought was wrong until we went to Fit2Run and they analyzed my stride or whatever. They guy said I had a good gait and didn't favor my heels or balls of my feet while running. He told my gf, who does heel strike a bit, to try to land more on the balls of her feet. I tried that but it seemed a little hard to do.

Is there an easy way to avoid heel strike?
