Well, you might lose muscle MASS, but you don't actually lose MUSCLE itself. Muscles are more water balloons than bricks. So, they expand and shrink, but there's not much brick addition and subtraction going on.

So, whatever you lose, it's not really a significant amount. (ref: Brad Pilon)

Even pro bodybuilders loaded to the hilt with drugs struggle to maintain their mass while losing fat -- granted they need to come in at %3-5 bodyfat but still since they are so roided up that's not much different for them to keep muscle down at those percentages than it is for us mortals to keep our meager muscle while getting to %10.

Personally, if I was Crazed or JustThetip I'd be looking to add 5 pounds of muscle as opposed to losing 5 pounds of fat which will still bring down the bodyfat without sacrificing muscle to do it. Then again, that's exactly what I'm doing so I'm admittedly biased :-)

Yup

My biggest struggle is getting bigger from weights then having to stop for a bit because I become slower on the basketball court.

just a tip to anyone...don't take your back for granted...

i hurt mine about a month ago, at 28-6'3"-190lbs-in shape, i don't know that i'll ever be able to weight train for strength gains ever again. i went from a gym rat, to a total couch potato, as even just walking for 10 minutes brings on mucho discomfort.

physical therapist says no to just about everything i want to do, citing my injury will be too vulnerable in those positions.

going to try to do 15mins on the elliptical today, that's about all i can handle right now

So, what did you DO to it? Not being able to train for strength ever again is presumptuous at this point, I would think. What about surgical options?

it's always an option, man... but honestly the day to day pain isn't enough to warrant it.

What did you DO to it?

If I couldn't work out like I wanted again, I think I'd be seriously considering surgery.

honestly, i don't know... i'll cut and paste from a PM conversation i'm having.
***
honestly man, i'm not sure what i did (woke up one morning and couldn't get out of bed), but i do have a couple of guesses.

at my old job, i used to move around a lot of heavy material by hand, and didn't always pick it up correctly or carry it in a balanced way (leaning way over to compensate). i knew i was at risk for something like this, so i spent a lot of time in the gym focusing on core and lower back exercises. just over a year ago was the first onset of a painful episode, throbbing pain in my left leg (i was in really damn good shape then). but, it went away after a couple days and ibuprofen, and was manageable while it was pissed off. i would have episodes like this every other month or so, but they were all mild compared to the episode i had last month, where i couldn't move at all.

there wasn't one single thing that i can say hurt my back, but it was probably an accumulation of a bunch of smaller injuries (including bad posture).

i can walk for about 10 minutes before i get uncomfortable, though i can do the elliptical for a while longer. i can't run at all. through most daily activities, the pain is nill...it's not until i do something to aggravate it, do i hurt that night...either in spasms or just straight pain. most dumbbell exercises are completely out of the question. the physical therapist i saw encouraged me to continue to be active and exercise and said weight lifting is ok as long as the spine stays neutral. i tried to do the lightest possible workout imaginable with chest press, incline press, and flys (machines), and i still was having spasms at night. sucks, man.

i'm not on painkillers every day, so i'm probably better off than you are...but this is still awful. my whole body aches from atrophy.
***

i'm not playing in any competitive sporting leagues, and my brain earns my paycheck, not my muscles... and while i do enjoy the gains from lifting hard, i think i'll be able to let it go with time.

Is it a pain that kind of radiates down the front or back of one of your thighs? If so, sounds like some sort of issue where something in your back is putting pressure on your sciatic nerve.

Also, I wouldn't write off any sort of a future of physical activity without consulting a professional first. Doctor, chiro, etc.

front and back when it was really inflamed.

i have consulted all of the aforementioned. at some point i'll get an MRI when my condition doesn't fully improve with physical therapy and will get a full answer, i can't just go order one without attempting some home remedy treatment, if i want insurance to pay for the test. the belief is that it is a disc herniation.

my impression, is that the amount that i will be able to train will be 100% dependent on me and my tolerance for pain, unless i have surgery. as i get older, it may become an option if my condition worsens. right now, it's merely an irritant and i don't take any pain medication, though i do have to change the ways i go about some things to ensure that i don't hurt myself. thus far, attempting to weight train (even lightly) has not gone well, even though everything i have done has been with neutral spine.

HI GUYS!! This was me about 4 years ago. Maxes were 395 bench, deads just under 600, and squat right about 500. Goal is to get back there in 6 months in size, but this time I am going to do lower weight and keep the reps around 10. I used to do heavy sets of 4-6, but there is no way my back will be able to support that much weight anymore. I'm looking to use low 300s for my squats and deads and just do as many reps as possible. I could probably get the bench back to those numbers though. I think I weighed around 210 here at 6ft. Anywho:

I wish I looked like that now. I am like 235lb and probably only have 80% as much muscle as I had then. LOL. I've got a lot of work to do.

Niglets please. I wasn't sucking in. Unfortunately I have a really big rib cage and there is a big cliff where my ribs stop and my stomach starts. The down side is if I ever got really ripped I think my abs would look weird. The upside is that if I am carrying weight around I don't liook as fat as I am. No one thinks I weight 235 right now when I have a shirt on. LOL.

I think its because I was always really fat growing up and my ribs kinda just grew into it. I've seen other former fatties with the same thing - big ribcages.

OK guys, officially back in the saddle with working out. While I can't fully open my hand for pushups, I can work them from doing these on my knuckles. I appreciate all the help and support from some of you over the past 2+ months as I needed to try and keep up workouts and nutrition over that time. Currently my right arm is working at about 60% capacity, which is all the doc suggested anyway. So there is still some work to do in recovery...it sure is nice to be back at it again. I didn't gain any weight, in fact I lost 6lbs over this time. All in all I wasn't set back too much.

I was filming myself to evaluate form with the gimp arm. Freeze framed on the gayness you see here.

Art, watch out...here I come! Only like 75lb more of muscle to build and I'll have yo ass beat. Anyway, the upper body is starting to take shape and pecs are growing and abs are starting to finally show through. No, those aren't handlebars for a goatee. I'm not THAT redneck. Right at 150lbs now.

This is shortly before I broke my arm, so I was able to improve things over the course of a broken arm, IMO.

If you can only go on your knuckles now I'd recommend buying some push up bars. Less stress on your wrists and better ROM. Like $10 from walmart.

Thought about that. I can do some by the palm using a folded towel (pictured to the left). I'll give it another week of working the wrist before I make any changes.
