I plan to take it slow. I did the first day of training and it was 20 minutes of alternating between 60 seconds jogging and 90 seconds walking. That was really easy and I don't even get up to five straight minutes of jogging for a few weeks. I'm spinning two days a week for higher intensity cardio (which also helps with core strength) and doing strength training on the same three days that I do the 5k training.

One of the other problems I have with running is disciplining myself to keep my pace down. I hate the feeling of barely moving that comes with starting out like this and pick up the pace when I shouldn't.

Looks friggin' hot! In the running mags they always show those kind of cool singletrack trails like you pictured, but around here it's all trees and roots.

But you guys have some kind of cool paved trail network right? I read a little about it last time I was in Orlando.

Yes, those are awesome! I'm usually not one for driving to run, but I may do that just to keep things fresh, as I'm starting to get bored with my routes.

Tomorrow the Moose Antlers will be worn. Promise. That hat was stifling after a mile or two. Anyways, first run in ~3 weeks and I lost a lot of endurance in that time. 26 min for 2.5 miles. \:\( Felt good to be out there though, that's for sure. My throat is so tight right now, Im wheezing like a mofo.

All in all, it was nice to be back.

My shin splint is ALMOST gone, but I can still feel the pain a bit when I run. So I've been doing my cardio in form of the stairmaster at my gym. Cant wait till the shin splint leaves entirely, so I can hit that pavement again.

Yes! I do 3.2miles/5K every other day and always take a day off on Sunday (football, of course). On Silock and others' recommendations I have started mixing some interval training which has been great at kicking my ass, but not so great on my shins. I can still keep up my regimen, but icepacks are necessary after every run.

I didn't see your previous post about my time. I just started getting under 29 minutes, which is down from 32 or so when I started. I have no idea where I should be at with that.

Keep piling up those miles!

My first officially timed 5k was 32:16 and my most recent was 27:34 I think. Youre right around the same time I am.

I rocked out a 6 miler two days ago, busted a 54 minute time on that run. My goal is to tack on distance, so I'm trying to push my workouts farther.

Woot! I'm finally able to run again. Did 3.2 miles this morning, my shin has very little pain but nothing bad enough to where it once was. These new shoes (kayano's) kick ass!

Great resource, don't know if it's been listed yet, but http://www.mapmyrun.com . It's free to use and will calculate distance / calories burnt / mph / time per mile. I love that website. \:D

Thanks focker. Soon I'll begin using a stopwatch to see how my times compare to yours. All this time I've been just jogging at my own pace and just been focusing on increasing my distance. I was up jogging around 6 miles (4x a week) a few weeks ago before the shin splint. Now I'm working myself back up to there. I felt like I could do more after the 3.2 miler today but didn't want to push it since it was my first run since the shin splint.

Yea, take it slow. I bet you're already ahead of my condition wise by just reading your posts. Ive never once knocked out a 6+ or heck, a 5+ miler as of yet. My longest run was 4.2 miles, and I still have to stop about every 7 or 8 minutes for a breather most days, especially when its cold out. Blech.

First half-marathon yesterday. I kind of owned myself by being cocky - I haven't trained in a while, and plus I just rolled up in there and drank a red bull and thought that would get me through 13 miles. Nope. So my pace crashed a little bit after about 7 - I got real lightheaded, and then my legs got kind of rubbery. Gatorade fixed both problems by the time I was smart enough to have some but due to the spacing of the stops, that wasn't until mile 12. Finishing time 1:43:29 against a (stretch) goal of 1:40:00 so I felt fine about that.

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/7391396

I won't be doing that again real soon. A 5k hurts a LOT more than that, but at least it's over 20-30 minutes after it starts.
