Hey guys. Need to pick up some new winter tires and wanted to get your opinions on the following:

- General Altimax Arctic 12
- Hankook W419 iPike
- Continental WinterContact SI

I originally had the iPike W409 and really liked them but not sure how the replacement W419 will compare.

I have the General’s on both my cars and my dad has them on his.

We’re happy with them. They’re essentially rebadged Gislaved Nordfrost 3s

Also check RFD for deals --- they almost always have "group buy" pricing .... (those 'group buy' prices may have slowly dissolved into 'normal' prices )

Thanks.
What's your experience with hills and traction? My main interest is traction on hills/inclines and good stability when going around sweeping turns.

My current ones last winter I found the rear breaking loose a bit when going around sweeping turns and spinning tires when on small inclines. Be it they are 4 seasons old and I just measured the tread depth at 3 x 6/32 and 1 x 7/32.

Funny just got a quote from CEO tires last night. I have the iPikes as well and I just measured mine to be about 5mm in the centre tread, deeper on the sides. I didn't care much for the iPikes, found I slipped a lot but it is a RWD car. I'm leaning towards the Conti VikingContact, Blizzak or Mich X-ice.

With the Michelin's I'm confused to the difference of the X-ice Snow vs North vs xi3.

Also watched: Fitment Industries "Best Winter tire" https://youtu.be/Xa1IcdGG9jA

Here are some prices from CEO for a 215-55-17

Pirelli Winter Ice Zero FR 98H XL $780.00 tax in

had the generals for the work car for a few seasons until they were done. great winter tire.

on the ipike's now, got them during 2020 winter, so this is season 2. so far so good. only reason i switched was better rebate. i think i got a $100 visa card.

fyi i drive a lot for work. hwy, city, rural. no complaints on either.

So I might be leaning towards Michelin X-Ice Snow (I know it wasn’t on my list but from reading it’s a pretty good tire with good wear performance). Simply Tire quoted $700+tax and Costco is advertising $720+tax. Which would you go for? Warranty I hear is pretty good at Costco.

The Hankook and Conti are being discontinued.

Costco has a road hazard warranty which may make it worthwhile. I thought they had an extra mounting fee of $20/tire though whereas it would be included with others.

What size tires are you looking at?

215/60R16 and I just need them mounted on steelies as I install the tires myself.

I just read on the Costco website that tires purchased should be the same size as recommended by the manufacturer. I'm going down two sizes (have always ridden on 16s for winters) so would Costco "deny" my purchase/mounting?

Made the jump and went with the X-Ice from Advan Tire. $730 all in with a $70 rebate.

Nice, I saw that the x ice snow is the newer version to the x ice north. I think I will go for the x ice myself.

I wasn't even considering Michelins since they were kinda pricey. But after watching reviews and the tech they use (worn tires still had grip compared to the competition) and Advan's price it was a no brainer.

Getting my Blizzaks from Simply Tire. They seem to be cheaper then the last set I bought. Did tire prices drop?

conti and bridgestone are superb but cost you. michelin also amazing but cost you more! pirelli is overpriced for what you get. we run so many models thru our work fleets. ironically kumho has come a long way and actually have out performed our testing vs. some top tier brands, so no issues using them. i like yoko in that price point but apparently their winters not great. hakook not bad. then you have your hakka's and gislaved which are great too, but hard to find.

i find for winters...if you can afford to ball-out on nice brand/set then do it. but honestly for our T.O winters it's nothing like real Canadian winters...so even the cheapest set of winters will do you just fine! nexen or generals from wal-mart do the trick. firestone is usually the cheapest of all.

I've always swore on Michelin X-Ices ...

Was going home a few yrs back on a pretty steep small street (off Caledonia?) ... and holy fuck ... With FWD + TC, had to turn off TC, and turn the wheel left and right to get enough traction to slowly go up... (meanwhile, mid-prices SUVs with AWD were doing just fine (winters or not unsure)) ...

Tho bald X-Ices are no laughing matter, and the X-Ice 2's were the worst ... (I guess that's why they jumped to v3 pretty quick.)

That has been my experience. Any winter tire will outperform all seasons.

Another thing is to watch for is the age of the tire. I find after 5 years, they don't perform as well (could be also due to tread depth.) I usually like to replace them after 5 years or so to be safe.

Wife’s model 3 has X-ice3. Way better than the blizzaks she had before.

Winters installed. Pirelli Sottozero. They look like fucking all seasons I've got a set of Firestone Winterforce on the truck and they're great. They're no Nokian or Blizzak but for the price it's hard to complain. I dunno what I'm going to toss once the Pirellis go into the garbage.

I have summer wheels (22s) and I’ll put back on the stock 20 inch wheels with the oem tires and then put on winter tires on those rims. It wasn’t clear.

Yeah pretty comfortable I like it as a daily driver overall. Just well rounded and practical. I had it since December last year. I plan to get another fun less practical car at some point so I wanted something that was really good as a daily.

Agreed x-ice 1-3 were just not a very good tire in deep snow. They got better on ice as they evolved, but the tread pattern was just not a dig out of deep snow tread pattern.

This new X-ICE north has actually been available in Northern Europe for some time and is probably a lot better in snow than older X-ICE.

I have the General Artic 12s. I got them because they have a very firm sidewall (even in 65 series) and they perform well in most winter situations. I suspect studding them would make them very capable.

I had X-Ice 1 thru to 3. 2 was absolute shit, and was only on the market... 2 years?

Currently on 3's on both cars ...

X-Ice North won't be available to us per se -- it's got studs...
