Should I be Concerned? v. Kijiji

I posted a high chair for sale on Kijiji. I had it priced at $15 and someone had asked if I can deliver it for an extra $5 . I looked up their address and they were about 15 mins away. Knowing that she doesn't drive and figured she might be strung up I decided to do her the favour.

When I got there it was cold out and we met in the parking lot of her building. She brought her two kids with her (about 3 yrs old) who were both wearing t-shirts and shorts. She seemed to be in a rush and handed me a folded $20 bill which I put it into my pocket and handed her the high chair.

A half hour later she texts me saying she accidentally gave me an extra $10 bill. Sure enough I checked my pocket and folded within the twenty was a ten. If she had handed me a ten or fives I definitely would have checked, however we agreed to $20 and thats what she gave me and so I didn't bother "counting it"

Anyway she wants me to eTransfer her the $10 back, which I have no problem doing. Heck I have no problem giving her all her money back. I offered to drive back but she insisted on eTransfer. My concern is, is this some sort of scam that I don't know of? Should I be weary?

That seems to be pretty labour intensive for a scam, but who knows these days.

As a sender e-transfer is pretty safe. Since there's nothing expected in return, I'd send the $10.

Re: Should I be Concerned? v. Kijiji

Yea I've done eTransfers many times and I can't see how she could scam me. I was just wondering if she's after my full name somehow. I guess I'm just being paranoid.

Re: Should I be Concerned? v. Kijiji

Put my phone up for sale yesterday.
One low ball offer which was $200 less than what I asked for.

Then other buyer messaged.
I was very skeptical because the buyer didn't ask for any price reduction.
Was willing to pay the full price and meet at the subway station. Also wanted to test it out with his/her SIM card.
Then gave me the Sudbury area code phone number.

Searched the name. It was a unique Brazilian name.
Found that it was a girl's name, and the Linkedin bio showing Sudbury residency/school.
So, I let my guard down a bit.

She was also being very cautious as well and asked if I could provide the proof of purchase...I gave her the screenshot of my Telus bill showing my phone number and the remaining balance of the device.
I also wanted to meet her outside the station, in the street, by my car, but she wanted me to come inside the station.

Anyway, I met her. A tiny girl with a Portuguese accent.
I tested the phone for her, She gave me the cash and done.
Almost wanted to say she should negotiate buying stuff off Kijiji but didn't.

First time I meet a Kijiji buyer at the subway station, but 3rd time the buyer paid the full asking price, including the last phone I sold.

Re: Should I be Concerned? v. Kijiji

Here's a question I've had re: buying a used phone. In your case, what prevents you from reporting the phone stolen after you've sold it? I know at that point there would be no benefit for you to do so. But lets say you stole it from someone and then sold it to that girl. Then after you've got the cash in hand, the rightful owner realizes that it was stolen and reports it.

I just think buying a phone from a complete stranger is risky, unless I'm missing something key in the whole process.

I've only bought it once because,
Mine stopped working, contract still had a few months to go.
It was a POS. Found out it had an aftermarket screen, missing screw internally, gyro broke, so screen didn't rotate. Didn't really think it would be that bad when I bought it and tested it out if it makes a call.

You just got to be careful.
I always sell mine complete with the original box and everything that came with the phone. Not likely stolen phones would come with boxes and original accessories.
These are some of the photos I uploaded in my ad.

Re: Should I be Concerned? v. Kijiji

I sell all my used phones on kijiji as I get an subsidized upgrade every 2 years. Clean phone, take pictures of the original box, block the serial number, post and wait for 20-30 lowball offers. I set the location and they come to me as I don't want to drive 20 minutes to be lowballed on the spot.(if they do, i drive 2 minutes home)

I usually look at the buyers age of account. If its a fresh account, I am more skeptical. I find that people who scam usually scam new phones. Who wants to scam for $500 when you can get paid more to jump those guys with their $1500 phones.

Meet in the day, served me well.
