I've been to many F1 races. Always get seats with a view of a TV screen. You'll see the cars for about 10s per lap at best.
Prepare to walk, a lot.
Stay wherever fits your budget.
Be patient with public transport and lineups. It's a lot of people to move around, so it takes time. At Montreal we chilled in the casino after the race, and had a much shorter line to wait through to get on the Metro in the evening.
Montreal is cool because BYOB is allowed.
