My mattress needs replacing, to say there are a lot of choices out there is an understatement. I'm a hot sleeper, so memory foam is out.. Can anyone recommend some brands I should check out? The Sealy Posturepedics are looking good. Simmons Beautyrest as well?

I went through this a few years ago, the only thing I can offer is go and try them out yourself instead of relying on Internet "research". What works for some won't work for others. As far as choices, it seems like there are a lot but it's just a bunch of the same shit Re branded.

Yeah, I've found the same. Did you end up returning any of the ones you tried? I can't imagine you can really get a good feel for one by just laying on it in the store I think Sleep County gives you 30 days or similar to test it out...

as much as men hating shopping, shopping for a mattress is something you have to put time into. pretend it's diesel powered
literally go and spend time. lie in each mattress for a few minutes. toss and turn and roll around as if you would in oyur own bed, sure you'll look like a jackass for a bit, but for the amount of time you spend using it, and the amount money you'll be spending. it's worth every penny.
i had good luck at Sleep Country in terms of a deal so that's where i'd go.

I bought at sleep country and they had a two week return policy. I took about two hours of trying out different mattresses plus my salesman was very knowledgable and the process was fairly straight forward.

Thanks gents, they really need hot sales ladies to 'lay' on the bed with you.

I'll go tonight and check a few out. I know what I don't want so hopefully that shortens the list up a bit.

Sleep Country /thread
Wife and I were in the same boat last year. Shopped around EVERYWHERE. At the end of the day, Sleep Country had the most educated and easy going sales people, the best selection, and it didn't feel weird to try the mattresses (compared to going to other places that had random people walking by). They also price-matched DirectBuy, so it was a no-brainer considering the free delivery.
Had it delivered, plopped it exactly where we wanted it, and they were in/out quick. No mess and no hassle.
You really have to try each mattress out. I thought I wanted something firm, but ended up going to something super soft. Needless to say, I fall asleep much faster and stay asleep (deeper sleep).
And I shit-you-not, 9 months later after getting that new mattress, I had a baby girl.

I just got my new mattress delivered yesterday from Sleep Country. Shit is ca$h.
Don't count memory foam out as newer beds have cooling technology so the heat isn't as bad. We went memory foam as the gf was tired of feeling me moving around if I rolled/tossed and turned throughout the night. Even with pocket coils, you'll still feel it considerably more than going foam.
We ended up with a Sealy Optimum Destiny, it's actually quite firm so you don't sink in too much into the foam but still soft/comfy. You have to go find what works for you if you don't already have an idea as far as if you want soft or firm.
Shopped at Sleep Country, The Brick and Mattress Mattress. Our sales guy at Sleep Country was a pro, knew everything about each mattress while other places just read shit off a card on the bed.
It was just over $1400 for the mattress, low profile box spring and a fuckin sweet ass pillow. $10 fee for taking our old mattress set away, worth.

It'd help if you know what bed frame you're gonna be using....
I bought a low pro box spring, and a thick ass euro top thing, THEN bought a bed frame... Fucking thing was a mountain after, so now I have the box spring leaning by the wall

How long would these mattress last? say in the 1300-2k price range? or the memory foam ones.
I need a new mattress, i think i won't cheap out on it.
At sleep country can i really negotiate at least 50% off ?

So I should be haggling for 40-60% off the price on the floor?
My bed is a custom one my dad made, it uses a normal sized box spring. I'll have to bug Wayne about some Direct Buy pricing

Nope. put the mattress on the floor and started using it.
We upsized from a Queen to King - and didn't want to invest in a box spring (when we knew we were getting a bed frame eventually - which has the wooden planks that serves as a box spring.
This mattress was thick enough and also has this pillow top thing so it's not superlow. To me, in order for the mattress to work well - it needs a very firm base; and nothing is firmer than the floor. We both got used to it.
It also worked well for our then 4 y.o. -- she was able to climb in our bed in the middle of the night when she had bad dreams and didn't disturb us. lol
