I definitely like this treatment much better. Still a little oversaturated for my liking, but much better on the sharpening end

Why I like this shot:

- taken before I knew the first thing about photography (ie completely lucked out on the ambient/artificial light balance)
- taken with a 4.0MP Canon S400 (from 2003) and I was shooting in Medium size JPEG lol 2.0mp?
- no tripod
- post process consists entirely of a crop in MS Paint

I like this photo as a reminder that what you shoot and how you shoot it is infinitely more important than the equipment with which you shoot it. The idea being that keeping this in mind will prevent me from shooting too many more "interesting lightpoles at night" and praying the characteristics of $$$ gear will make it interesting

EDIT: sadly enough, you can see in my signature that flickr has deemed the lightpole in question to be my most interesting photo

and I'll go ahead and post one for tomorrow while I'm at it:

This photo is an accident, camera was set to ISO 800 until I realized later on, but those clouds were killin' it anyway.

A little higher up and you could've seen the track a little better. The "Carousel" at Summit Point:

fvck, I see a couple dust spots...oh well, this was impromptu.

Thanks, it even blew me away when I looked through the viewfinder. Polarizers ftw...Porsche was with 70-200mm 2.8L IS and the big sky shot was a 17-40mm 4L.

About 7am, shortly after the park opened and before the sun was fully in the valley.

My random shot for today. Taken over the weekend at a Storm Readyness Expo we had at the Ocala Airport. Took about 150 shots, but I was using a CP and a lot of them came out darker than I thought they would. Kinda bummed about that, but oh well.

This was taken from the ATC tower.

Scott,

I see your flying bird and I will raise you a hunting bird

Taken at dusk with my old 70-300g which got a little soft when pushed did ok with enough light.

In keeping with the bird theme...

can you go over your PP steps on that AC-130 shot? It looks like it has a glow to it!

Hmm, if I can remember correctly:

- Messed with the Shadows/Highlights, brought down the shadows a bit and bumped the highlights just a little.
- Used Selective Color to get some more color out of the reds, blues, and greens. The CP kind of made them dull looking.
- Bumped up the Exposure a tad since it was a little dark.
- Filter > Sharpen
- Bumped up the Vibrance to like +3 and Saturation to +3 or 4.

That's pretty much it. Like I mentioned, this was shot from the ATC tower which was really dark inside. They were cool enough to open one of the blinds for me to shoot out of. I was really bummed about how a few of my other shots came out because of my lack of skill using a CP. I haven't really messed with them PP wise yet though.

I tried using the Sunny 16 Rule, but I was doing something wrong since all my shots were too dark, even with it being a bright day out with almost zero clouds. I dunno, I'm still such a n00b at this shit, I need to shoot more and read more on technique.

Which shooting mode were you using?

You've got me a bit confused here.

Why are you messing around with something like the Sunny 16 rule? You have a modern camera with TTL metering. Since the light isn't being metered until it passes through the CPL your camera should still be returning a "correct" exposure. As always, just keep an eye on your histogram and dial in exposure compensation as needed.

I was in Manual mode. I should've used P or A, now that I think of it.

Honestly, I just wanted to play around with the Sunny Rule, no real reason at all. Again, I'm still relatively a n00b when it comes it using my D80.

I was keeping track of my cameras meter, but it was so bright out that I could barely see it at times, especially with my sunglasses on. I'd say the first 20-25 pics I took were underexposed quite a bit.

I really need to use the histogram more, that's something I definitely slack on.

I know that camera will now meter through the CP filters but I do feel like the CP filter can play tricks on the camera. I use a Hoya 77mm CP and sometimes things just look off.

for example
I should have been able to shot much faster that 1/6th at F/11 with a 400 iso. There were very few clouds in the sky.

Too bad my train picture were all before the start of the current contest.

What possessed you to shoot in Manual?

There are a handful of situations where manual is appropriate, but 99% of the time you should be in A or S.

You were metering for a dark colored train that was presumably in the shadows. You can see that the building and sky in the background were overexposed.

Are you sure that you didn't have an ND filter or something on there though? 1/6th at f/11 and ISO400 is ridiculous for any type of daytime shooting

I had my CP filter in place so that I could make a pretty sky and get some nice saturated colors in the bright sun.

Good question. I don't know, just figured I try it out...so much for that! Why not use P mode?

Yeah, but a CPL shouldn't cut enough light to get you down to those settings. You'll lose a stop or two, but 1/6th of a second in afternoon daylight? Ridiculous!

Better question: why use P mode? A/S are just as simple but you get more control over the look of the image.

I think that the only pictures that I have from that day without the CPL are from inside the train with a flash.

The train was dark and was in the shade from the station.

Dark enough shade will do that. If you had taken the CPL off you might've gotten 1/10th or 1/15th, but CPLs don't suck up that much light.
