So I have been out of BJJ and MMA class for 2 weeks. I had what looked like a pimple on my neck. Turned out it was staph. I've run the antibiotics and stuff, now it's just a tiny scab. My instructor won't let me back on the mat until it's gone, which I guess I understand. It just sucks sitting and watching. I have been lifting still, so that helps, but man I ready to roll. Anyone else have to take a break recently?

Just finished a two month break because of broken ribs and whooping cough.

I pulled a hip flexor last Monday and had moles removed on Tuesday so this week has sucked balls. I did get to roll last night but I was extra slow.

BTW, I don't want staph anywhere close to the gym. We hit the mats with bleach solution after we roll.

I am trying to get ready for this

and then this

Nope. Haven't sat out longer than a week forever. When I had surgery, I was able to ride the bike lightly after a week and jog after 1-1/2 weeks with a girdle. My Achilles is flaring up a bit, but I'll just cut down on running a bit.

But I'd imagine any broken bone would change that. I'm dreading the day I have to take time off, because I've worked so long and so hard to get to the shape I'm in.

For some reason I assumed they were unrelated.

I haven't done any BJJ in weeks and I've been light on my incline presses because I fell weird a few weeks ago and tweaked my shoulder pretty good.

nothing serious.

Been slacking off somewhat, but I'd say hitting diet/gym at about 60%.

I went HAM from May-Aug, so now I'm in a don't give a fuck "bulking" stage.

It happens. Ironman champ Craig Alexander missed almost half his season last year from a really bad illness that included a cough so bad he cracked two ribs.

Well maybe making this post help me out, but I got to roll yesterday. As we were taking my daughter to gymnastics, I grabbed my bag and gi. My wife said "he's not going to let you roll", but I took it anyway. I got there, and my instructor stopped me immediately and looked at my neck. He asked where my gi was, and I said in the car. He told me to go get it and I ran out like a kid a Christmas.

I didn't do all that bad, all things considered. We have an unofficial policy that white belts are supposed to roll with blue or above, so naturally I was getting worked over. But everybody there is really cool and takes time to explain what you did wrong, what you could have done to counter, etc. My cardio has suffered a bit with a 2-week layoff, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

It really makes me angry that some scumbag parent was too ignorant/fearful to get their stupid kid immunized from an obsolete 3rd world disease and they fucked you over massively. There is no logical reason to skip those immunizations. No American should be getting fucking whooping cough in 2012.

God DAMN I hate people.

My sentiments exactly. Although, I'm more angry that some little kid or toddler is getting it, too, and it's got to be way worse for them than it was for me.

Actually, you are stupid and uninformed. Whooping cough is not one of the nearly eradicated diseases "but for" people who don't immunize. It is a disease that requires you to continually be immunized over your lifetime, as the vaccination only lasts for so long. When was your last whooping cough shot, you silent disease spreader? I'm sure it wasn't recently, as you seem to be unaware of the need for boosters. In any case, the shot will only protect you and others so much, it only protects against certain strains, some that are currently active have no coverage from the shot. Babies will die from people like you who think they can't get it or spread it probably as much as parents who don't vaccinate. My mom had it last year, and cracked a rib from coughing so hard. I thought she was going to die.

The point is that if enough people immunize, we have herd immunity. But, as people stop, cracks in that wall appear. There's a reason that the vast majority of cases involve school children. As less of them are vaccinated, more contract the illness, which then spreads to other members of the herd who shouldn't need to be vaccinated, even though the vaccine doesn't last a lifetime. Is it really just a coincidence that vaccination rates are dropping among the school age population, and consequently we are seeing a dramatic rise in illnesses like pertussis?

I agree that is a huge problem, but to argue herd immunity against something that isn't fully covered by the vaccination anyway is pretty silly. Whooping cough vaccination is more like a flu shot. Maybe you are covered, maybe not, good prevention sure, never going to get the flu again, or spread it to others, fucking laughable. You are also ignoring the fact that gamby is completely unaware of his ability to contract and spread this disease... a shot in childhood does not cover you for a lifetime. Maybe you can thank him for getting it.

You have much higher odds of contracting it the more you are exposed. More exposure comes with less vaccinations in susceptible populations. Even if you HAVE the vaccination, you can still get it (most that get it have the vaccination already). It all boils down to raw exposure numbers, which is far fewer with herd immunity.

Got a small adbominal strain hitting a 308 backsquat triple. Was probably pressing against the belt too hard for that 2nd rep I'm sure. Doing squat cleans after I'm sure didn't help things. I'm cool now but sucks not working out for 2 or 3 days.
