Here's my home "gym"

I'm trying to come up with standard routines where I can go down there and de-fat-ify myself. I'd like a 15 minute, 30 minute, and 60 minute option. I'm very new to running and weights, but I ride my bicycle all the time (2300+ miles/yr). My calves and quads are ripped, but the rest of me is fluffy. I'm currently 219lbs, wanting to be 200 by July 1, and to 185 by November. If I can crush those goals, I'd be thrilled. Diet is already in (slow) progress, but I know I need to supplement my bike riding with actual exercise.

Any suggestions on how to get the most out of my time/machines?

Sell all of it except the bike and buy a power rack and Olympic weight set. It'll be hard to do Starting Strength (or Stronglifts or Madcow or 5/3/1) on the machine. \:D

I got a squat rack and 300lb set on Craigslist for $150. Now I am wishing I had a cage, but I don't want to put a nice cage outside where it will rust. I wish I had a basement like that. \:\(

I know that's not a regimen for your current equipment, so my apologies. Maybe someone with more experience in machines can chime in.

Agreed. Squat rack and bar are light years ahead of machine.

Intervals on bike, jog on treadmill, lift per a good plan and you're set. I'd still add some sprints outside. Jog 200m, sprint 100m to 150m, walk 100m.

The treadmill, gym machine, and lame Gazelle thing were all free from friends/family. I'd need to keep the treadmill. but I have no problem selling the rest for something smaller and more useful. I'll keep an eye out on CL for "real" weights. The bike is getting sold in a couple weeks, so I'll have to stick to riding outdoors until I get my new road bike built.

Thanks for the advice!

Treadmill is fine to use...though I find outside easier and more effective to run outside. Grab a jump rope too. Always good and dirt cheap. The gym machine is better than nothing, but those machines really do suck.

It's far too icy for me (the novice runner) to be running outside. I'll wait for better conditions before trying that. I'm fine on the bike outside, but walking/running is a disaster waiting to happen!

See the Green/Chrome frameset against the window in the background? It's all Reynolds 531 butted steel, handbuilt in Texas by in 1974. It'll be built up with the original components, first generation Dura Ace from 1974. There will be a few modern bits here and there too when it's all said and done. Should be a couple pounds lighter than the CrossCheck it's replacing. It'll be the perfect long distance/randonneuring bike that can hold it's own in a fast group ride. I'm excited!

Buy shoes, buy slip on studs (pretty cheap).

I run year round here. I just pretend I'm Rocky in Russia.

There is a workout equipment Subforum on bb.com. That is a great place to learn about home gyms. There is also a running CL thread that lists all gym equipment deals.

With your machine you could still do some working out though if you want to keep it.

I'd just circuit train on it. 3-4 sets on each station moderate intensity. You can change grip on the lag pull down. Vary rep speed, weight, rep range on everything else. For the seated leg station vary from toes pointing out to toes up etc.

The machine you have is useful only for the lat pull down and maybe the leg extensions as isolation exercises (or supersets) to a free-weight-based routine. It takes up a lot of space though. I'd try to get a rack with a high/low pulley attachment and a bench with leg attachment for plates. The sky would be the limit then with a good Olympic set.

That is SO fucking pimp. So many questions now--

So the Dura Ace stuff that came with it is still in decent shape (not overly worn)???

700c wheels? (and with that STI levers/9/10spd drivetrain?) Tektro makes some nice calipers that work with the 27"-->700c conversion. I doubt I could cope with 5-6 speed and friction frame shifters now. Might be a refreshing change, though. It was good enough for Merckx...

PLEASE do a build thread on this thing!!!
