That curvy strap that is bonding your neutral to your case needs to be removed.


btw, again why did it have to be removed? I actually didn't know how to hook up the sub panel feed. I will post a pic tonight.

Your neutral is bonded to ground, it is a grounded conductor. It is only supposed to be bonded to ground though at your main service entrance. If you bond it to ground elsewhere there is a chance for injury, your ground conductor which under normal circumstances should not be carrying any current has the potential to start carrying the load that your neutral conductor is supposed to.

Pic of panel updated, question: can my wires take on such a bend because of the 2x4 or should i drill through the 2x4 and re run them so they aren't as bent???


Also, not sure what to do with my last wire, where do i connect it?

The ground should get connected to the ground bar in the panel, it looks like those smaller bars along each vertical by the breakers.

I would drill out the 2x4s and run it though, that way the wire is supported too. The sheathing on the main 6/3 needs to be shortened down more, only a small amount can stick through the connector.

-You still haven't removed that strap.
-The bare wire is supposed to be attatched to the case. There should be a lug in the service entrance somewhere. Since it is a sub panel though you can bring it down to where the other grounds go.
-You cannot run wires across the bus (in reference to the white wire coming in on the right hand side), needs to go completely around and not obstruct space that a breaker would fit). If it's not long enough just extend it with a wirenut.
-And for the wires going in the panel, I would drill holes and bring them in with less of a bend or you can notch the face of the 2x4 where your wires need to go into the knockout and then put a smash plate over. Drilling a hole would probably be best though.

actually, just noticed that your main service entrance is completely separated from the rest of the panel. You will have to drill a ground lug into the case.

run the neutral all the way down the right side of the case, bend it and run it along the bottom of the case, bend it and run it along the left side and up to the neutral bar. That way it goes around the perimeter, right now its taking a short cut across the middle. See if you wanted to add more breakers in the future the wire would be in the way

loudsubz covered the first thing. your neutral for that 14/2 wire goes across the bus bar, you can leave it if you want but I figured that I would mention it is against code.

As for the ground, you can put it anywhere against the case. You need a wire lug though. I personally would drill and tap a 1/4-20 hole, bolt the lug down and then put a nut on the backside to make sure it stays since the metal really isn't that that.
You may have to hit up a electrical wholesaler to find a lug.
Google either graybar or nedco, i'm sure there are quite a few in the GTA.

hey robby do you notice a big diff in price between an electrical supplier and HD?

going to be adding a sub panel in my garage and will also need some 6/3, not sure if HD is on par with price.

not sure to be honest. i've known the counter guy at the wholesaler i go to for years and we've become buddies. He sells me stuff below contractor pricing so it always blows away HD pricing.
Best bet would just be to call but I imagine for a walk in customer pricing is going to be on par with home depot.
If you have a long run to your garage you can always go with aluminum, should be MUCH cheaper than copper, although 6 gauge probably only gets you 50A with the AL, i'd have to double check the code book.

ya, what you put does the job, not sure if an inspector would like that but whatever, as long as it is on there tight.

Everything looks ok, i mean you can get picky and fix the wires going on the main breaker (cut the shorter, not all twisted up looking), but you're good to fire it up.
Also that bar I told you to remove... you unbolted it from the case but just undo the little set screw and take it right out, not worth letting it dangle there.

edit - almost forgot, any knockouts (holes), in the panel that you are not using are supposed to have fillers in them. Not a big deal but it is code.

I have cleaned up the whole panel and I got the 60 amp double pull sylvania breaker for my main...for $80 \:\( The 100amp and 40amp are like 40 bucks, but since no one has a 60 it was through the roof price wise.

h000llly crap that's expensive.

Buddy will donate me a 200 amp panel, which I will save for now. Maybe down the road if I run out of projects and decide to be sparky i will do something with \:D
